Chapter 41 - A New Stage

Devendra had grown. Sixteen years old now, he looked at himself in the mirror and barely recognized the boy who had spent so many nights trapped in nightmares and shadows. The face staring back at him was leaner, older, a little more composed—but the eyes still carried fragments of the past.

Nepal's bustling city life surrounded him now. He had moved into a modest apartment near the college campus, far from the narrow lanes of his childhood. The sounds of traffic, street vendors calling out, the distant honk of motorbikes—everything was new, chaotic, and strangely comforting. Life had begun to feel more real, even though the echoes of the girl who had haunted him still lingered in his mind.

College was a different world altogether. Devendra walked through the campus, textbooks clutched in his hands, trying to focus on the lectures, the people, the routine. He had been away from school for so long, trying to recover from the trauma that had shaped his childhood, that now every interaction felt both exciting and exhausting. He watched other students laughing in groups, sharing notes, joking freely. A pang of isolation hit him, but he pushed it down. He had survived so much already; he could handle this.

Yet, even here, in the crowded hallways and sunlit lecture rooms, the shadows were never far. Sometimes, when a laugh rang out too sharply, or someone brushed past him unexpectedly, he would freeze, a tiny shiver crawling up his spine. The memories of the endless nightmares, the countless nights of terror, were woven into his mind like threads he couldn't pull free.

Still, he tried. He joined a few student groups, attempted small conversations, smiled when others smiled at him. Little by little, he was learning what it meant to be just a normal sixteen-year-old boy living in a city he now called home.

His apartment, though simple, had become a sanctuary. From the small balcony, he could see the city lights stretching endlessly, reminding him of the world beyond his fears. The nights were quieter than the ones in his childhood home, the shadows softer, easier to ignore.

And though he knew the girl from his past could never be entirely gone, he had reached a point where the memories no longer controlled him. He had survived, and now he was slowly starting to live.
