Chapter 84 - The Trap Closes

The scream didn't just echo.

It lingered.

Like it had soaked into the walls… refusing to leave.

"RHEA!"

Noah ran.

Not thinking.

Not stopping.

His footsteps pounded against the concrete floor, each one louder than the last, each one chasing that voice that still rang in his ears.

Behind him...

"NOAH...WAIT!"

Evan followed, breath uneven, trying to keep up. "This isn't right...something doesn't feel right!"

"I don't care!" Noah shot back without slowing.

The corridor stretched endlessly ahead.

Dim.

Cold.

The flickering lights above barely held on, buzzing softly like they were seconds away from dying completely.

"Did you hear where it came from?" Evan asked, his voice tighter now.

No answer.

Because Noah had already turned.

Left.

Evan cursed under his breath and followed.

The deeper they went...

The quieter it got.

No more screams.

No footsteps echoing from ahead.

No movement.

Just silence.

Wrong.

Noah slowed.

Just a little.

His instincts catching up with his desperation.

"This isn't right…" Evan whispered again, more certain this time.

A metallic sound echoed somewhere behind them.

They turned.

The door they had entered through...

Slid shut.

With a heavy, final clang.

Evan rushed back, grabbing the handle, pulling hard.

Locked.

"Noah…"

Noah didn't move.

Because now...

He could hear something else.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Deliberate.

From ahead.

A dim light flickered on at the far end of the corridor.

Just enough to reveal...

A figure...Still...Waiting...

It was Kai

Evan's breath caught.

"…Kai."

Noah didn't speak.

His fists clenched slowly at his sides.

For a moment...

Time stopped.

Then...

Kai tilted his head slightly.

Like he had been expecting them all along.

"You came faster than I thought," he said.

His voice was calm.

Steady.

Almost… familiar.

Noah took a step forward.

"Where is she?"

Kai smiled faintly.

"Safe."

A pause.

"For now."

Evan stepped closer to Noah.

Instinctively.

"You touch her..." Evan started.

"I didn't."

Kai's voice cut through his.

Not loud.

But sharp enough to stop him.

Silence stretched again.

Noah's gaze didn't leave Kai.

"You will," he said quietly.

Not a question.

A certainty.

Kai's smile shifted.

Not wider.

Just… different.

"That depends."

A soft click echoed.

Before Evan could react....

The floor beneath him shifted.

"Evan!!"

Too late.

A metal snap.

Restraints shot up from the sides, locking around Evan's wrists, pinning him in place.

"NOAH—!"

Noah lunged forward...But a barrier slammed down between them.

Hard.

Solid.

Unbreakable.

"Evan!"

Evan struggled, pulling against the restraints, but they didn't move.

Didn't even shake.

"Noah...don't...!"

Noah slammed his fist against the barrier.

Once.

Twice.

Again.

Nothing.

Behind him...

Footsteps.

Closer now.

Kai.

"You shouldn't have run ahead," he said quietly.

Noah turned.

His eyes burned now.

Not just with anger.

With something deeper.

"What did you do to him?"

Kai didn't answer.

He stepped closer instead.

Slowly.

"You didn't walk in here," he said.

Noah's breathing slowed.

Sharpened.

"You were led."

Silence.

And then...

Something shifted.

Noah took a step forward.

Not aggressive.

Not attacking.

"…Kai."

The name came out softer this time.

Different.

Kai's expression flickered.

Just for a second.

"Stop."

The word hung between them.

Heavy.

"This isn't you," Noah continued, his voice steady but low. "I know you. We all do."

Kai didn't move.

Didn't interrupt.

"We trusted you," Noah said. "I trusted you."

A breath.

"You're not… this."

A long silence followed.

Kai's eyes stayed on him.

Unblinking.

"Not this?" he repeated quietly.

Noah stepped closer.

Closer than he should have.

Closer than was safe.

"You don't have to do this," he said. "Whatever this is, whatever you think you've become, it's not too late."

Evan looked up at him.

Shocked.

Noah didn't look back.

"We can fix this," he continued. "We can help you."

Kai let out a small breath.

Almost a laugh.

But not quite.

"Help me?"

Noah nodded.

"Yes."

Kai's head tilted slightly.

His expression unreadable.

"You think this is something broken?" he asked.

"It is," Noah said immediately.

Another pause.

Kai stepped closer.

Now only a few feet away.

"Then tell me," he said softly. "When did it break?"

Noah didn't answer.

"Was it before you met me?" Kai continued.

"Or after?"

His voice didn't rise.

Didn't shake.

But something inside it had changed.

"You say you know me," Kai said.

A beat.

"Do you?"

Noah's jaw tightened.

"Yes," he said.

Kai smiled.

This time...

It didn't reach his eyes.

"No," he said quietly.

Another step forward.

"You knew who I pretended to be."

The words landed.

Hard.

Evan's grip tightened against the restraints.

Noah didn't move.

Didn't step back.

"Then let me know the real you," he said.

That....

Made Kai pause.

For the first time.

A flicker.

Small.

But real.

Noah saw it.

And held onto it.

"Let her go," Noah said softly. "And we'll figure this out. Together."

Silence.

Long.

Heavy.

Uncertain.

And then...

Kai smiled again.

But this time...

It was cold.

"That's not how this ends."

Another click echoed.

Somewhere deeper inside the building.

And in that moment...

Noah understood.

This wasn't a rescue.

This was a game.

And they had already lost the first move.
