Chapter 18 - Chapter 18

The Portal Home — Return From Peril

The portal ruptured the air with a sharp, resonant hum before violently ejecting them back into the sect.

Light twisted and collapsed inward, and in the next instant, Xiao Yan and Mi-An were thrown onto the familiar stone floor of the great hall. The sudden return sent ripples of shock through the gathered disciples. Gasps echoed from every direction as figures stumbled backward, startled by the abrupt reappearance.

For a brief moment, silence reigned.

Then relief flooded the hall.

Mi-An steadied herself immediately, her grip firm as she held Xiao Yan close. Though exhaustion weighed heavily on her body, her movements were precise and careful. She carried him forward, each step grounded and controlled, refusing to let the lingering fear slow her down. Xiao Yan felt the solidity of the ground beneath him, the familiar scent of the sect's incense, and only then did the reality sink in—they were home.

Safe.

Saints rose from their seats almost at once.

Saint Lu Qi stood at the forefront, his eyes bright as he took in the sight before him. The tension that had long settled across his features finally eased. His gaze swept over Mi-An, then settled on Xiao Yan, lingering with unmistakable pride.

"They've completed the trials… and returned safely," he said.

His voice carried through the hall, calm yet filled with quiet triumph. It was not loud, but it did not need to be. Every disciple present felt the weight of his words. Against impossible odds, they had survived.

Mi-An gently lowered Xiao Yan onto the stone floor, careful not to jar his weakened body. He stirred slightly, his breathing shallow but steady. She straightened and turned toward Saint Lu Qi, her expression composed despite the exhaustion lining her eyes.

"Master…" she asked softly, her voice barely above a whisper, "what is the last trial about?"

Saint Lu Qi regarded her in silence for a brief moment, as though measuring something unseen. When he finally spoke, his tone was calm, yet heavy with meaning.

"It depends on each person's fate," he said. "Most meet their alchemy—the path that defines their immortality."

Mi-An absorbed his words without speaking. The hall seemed to hold its breath.

Then, slowly, something changed.

A gentle warmth bloomed around her, subtle at first, like a distant glow. The air responded instinctively, rippling outward as light began to gather around her form. The glow strengthened, wrapping her in radiance that pulsed steadily, neither violent nor rushed.

Mi-An closed her eyes.

Her body lifted from the ground, rising inch by inch as the glow intensified. Mortal weight shed itself naturally, as though the world itself was releasing its hold on her. Light cascaded outward, illuminating the hall in soft brilliance. The stone walls reflected the radiance, casting shimmering patterns across the stunned faces of disciples and Saints alike.

Awe spread through the crowd.

She ascended fully, her form suspended within the light, transcending the boundary that separated mortal and immortal. No words were spoken. None were needed.

Behind her, Xiao Yan stirred.

Pain still clung to his body, but his awareness sharpened as he opened his eyes. He felt the shift in the air before he fully understood it. Slowly, he lifted his gaze, his breath catching as he took in the sight above.

Mi-An… immortal.

The realization struck him deeply. Pride, wonder, and an unfamiliar resolve welled up in his chest. Despite his weakness, something solidified within him—a determination born not of power, but of purpose.

Then—

The heavens trembled.

A violent tear split across the sky as lightning surged downward in jagged streaks, brilliant and merciless. Thunder roared, shaking the sect to its foundations. The sudden descent of raw energy sent shockwaves through the hall, forcing disciples to shield their eyes.

The air vibrated, thick with power.

Xiao Yan stared upward, his heart pounding as he understood what this meant. The trials may have ended, but something far greater awaited them beyond this moment.

The light faded. The thunder lingered.

And beneath the restless heavens, both Xiao Yan and Mi-An knew the truth:

Their journey had only just begun.

The shadow of the Ansha still loomed over the world—and safety was nothing more than an illusion waiting to be shattered.
