Chapter 1 - Shadow of the Voidstone

CHAPTER 1: The Quiet Before Impact

The corridor was loud.

Voices overlapped, laughter echoed, and footsteps filled the space with restless energy. Students moved in groups, talking like the world revolved around them.

Kael walked through it like it didn't.

At sixteen, he had already learned how to disappear without actually leaving.

His hoodie hung loosely over his frame, hands buried in his pockets. His messy black hair fell over his eyes, hiding a gaze that rarely showed interest in anything around him.

People passed him.

No one noticed.

"…Math exam is today, right?"

"I didn't study anything…"

"We're finished…"

The noise blended into something distant.

Then—

A hand landed on his shoulder.

"Hey."

Kael stopped.

He turned slightly.

Ren Takaishi.

Blond hair, neatly combed. Calm posture. A presence that stood out without trying. Even in silence, people noticed him.

A year younger.

Yet somehow ahead in every way that mattered here.

"You studied for the exam?" Ren asked.

Kael looked forward again.

"…I'll manage."

Ren exhaled softly.

"You always say that."

They walked together, though it was obvious who the crowd noticed more.

"That's Ren…"

"He topped again…"

"Even seniors ask him doubts…"

Ren ignored it.

Kael heard it.

Neither reacted.

The classroom fell silent.

Question papers were placed face down.

"Start."

The sound of pages flipping filled the room.

Kael looked at the sheet.

Numbers. Questions. Problems.

He understood them.

He just didn't care.

A few rows behind—

"Oi… show me."

Kael didn't turn.

"I said, show me your answers."

Riyuta.

Loud. Aggressive. The kind of person who made sure people listened.

Kael's pen paused.

"…No."

A chair shifted.

"Don't act smart."

Kael raised his hand.

The small motion cut through the silence.

"Yes?" the teacher asked.

Kael spoke calmly.

"Sir… he's trying to copy."

Silence.

Every student looked up.

Riyuta's expression darkened instantly.

The teacher walked over, observing briefly.

"Riyuta. Submit your paper."

"What—?"

"You're disqualified."

Murmurs spread.

Then—

"I saw it too, sir."

Ren's voice.

Calm. Clear. Final.

That was enough.

Riyuta stood up abruptly, chair scraping against the floor.

For a moment, it looked like he might argue.

Instead, he leaned toward Kael as he passed.

"You're dead after school."

Kael didn't respond.

He simply looked back at his paper.

As if nothing had happened.

The final bell rang.

Students rushed out, tension dissolving instantly.

Kael walked alone.

Or so it seemed.

"Snitch."

He stopped.

Riyuta stood ahead, two others behind him.

This time, there were no rules.

"You really had to open your mouth?" Riyuta said, stepping closer.

Kael stayed silent.

Then—

Ren stepped forward.

Not fast.

Not aggressive.

Just enough to stand between them.

"Or maybe," Ren said calmly, "you shouldn't cheat."

Riyuta's eyes narrowed.

"Move."

Ren didn't.

The air grew still.

Then Riyuta swung.

Fast. Direct.

Aimed at Ren's face.

—but it never landed.

Ren caught his wrist mid-air.

Clean.

Effortless.

The impact never came.

Silence.

Riyuta froze.

Ren's grip tightened slightly—not enough to hurt, but enough to control.

"You're done," Ren said quietly.

No anger.

No tension.

Just certainty.

That made it worse.

The two behind Riyuta hesitated.

Kael, standing just behind, felt it too.

That presence.

That pressure.

Ren wasn't just stopping him.

He was dominating the situation without even trying.

Riyuta tried to pull his hand back.

Failed.

For the first time—

his confidence cracked.

"Let go," he snapped.

Ren released him.

Like it didn't matter.

Riyuta stepped back, rubbing his wrist, anger mixed with something else now.

Something quieter.

Before anything could escalate—

"WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?!"

The teacher's voice cut through the moment.

Mr. Takeda approached quickly, eyes sharp.

Riyuta straightened.

"Nothing, sir."

"Nothing?" the teacher's gaze hardened. "I heard shouting from the street."

Silence.

His eyes locked onto Riyuta.

"You. Again."

No response.

"I warned you in class. And now this?" His tone sharpened. "One more incident, and I won't be lenient."

Riyuta clenched his jaw.

"Go home."

The order was final.

Riyuta turned, glaring at Kael… then at Ren.

"This isn't over."

He walked away.

The others followed.

Silence returned.

Ren glanced back.

"You okay?"

Kael wiped the corner of his lip.

"…Yeah."

But something felt different.

Not outside.

Inside.

That moment—

When the punch had almost landed.

When everything had gone quiet.

When Ren had stopped it so easily.

For a split second…

Kael had felt something.

A strange stillness.

Like something deep within him had reacted.

Not fear.

Not pain.

Something else.

Something… waiting.

Kael looked up.

The sky had darkened.

Clouds gathering slowly.

And far beyond them—

Something burned as it fell.

A streak of light cutting through the horizon.

Silent.

Unstoppable.

Coming closer.

To be continued…
