Chapter 8 - The Rise of Calamity Part 1

Storm felt absolutely lost.

His Nesting grounds was destroyed and his family most likely dead.

He knew there were survivors, but it was impossible to track them through the air.

They would have likely already scattered in every direction by now.

Suddenly he realized that his father had set up a plan for just such an emergency.

"The Frost Caps!!" Thought Storm.

The Frost Caps was located on a massive mountain a few day's flight from the Nesting grounds.

His father scouted out the location while looking for a suitable habitat for his clan. He first rejected the mountains due to the cold climate and lack of a suitable food source for the dragons, but quickly decided that it would make a good place to gather in case of an emergency.

The mountains were vast, and the isolated cave he choose for the site was located near the summit of the mountain, which couldn't be reached without the aid of wings.

Storm had several problems reaching this destination however.

His injury limited the height he could fly, so reaching the summit would be difficult.

The journey normally wouldn't have taken him too long, but his injury would slow him and he was already far behind the rest of his clan.

This would mean that he would have to fly through the night to hopefully catch up.

He was already tired from lack of sleep, another two evenings, maybe even more depending on his progress, would be torment.

The clan wouldn't stay long in that place, they didn't even know if he was even still alive, if he missed the meeting, he might never find them again.

"I have to try though!" Thought Storm.

He checked the caves one last time and found a single batch of soothing salves.

Rubbing it into muscles, it helped to soothe a dragon's aching joints, it also somewhat dulled the feeling of pain for dragons.

'This will help for the journey!!"

After administering the salve to his wing muscles and sides, he jumped into the air and hovered in place.

He took one last look at his childhood home.

"One day we shall return!! Once everything has been made right, we will reclaim our home." Thought Storm.

He turned in the direction of the mountain and began his long journey.

Time seemed to slow down for Storm, he flew with every shred of strength he could muster and yet it seemed like the journey would never come to an end.

When the sun finally set on the first day, he ignored his body's command to stop and sleep and continued all throughout the night.

When the sun rose again the next morning, his belly was empty and begging him to fill it.

He ignored it and pressed on flying through another 2 full days and nights.

On the 3rd day's end, The Frost Caps finally came into view.

He quickened the flaps of his wings and slowly rose up to the summit.

When he finally reached the top he folded his wings and landed heavily in the ground.

Running as fast as he could , he entered the tunnels and rushed to the main chamber.

It was empty.

All around were the old tracks of dragons, based on the signs, they had left the previous day.

All hope left him and he finally allowed the tears he'd held back to flow freely.

He fell to the ground and laid there for nearly an hour before he managed to scrape together the will to move again.

He gathered a few plants and brushes from the surroundings outside, placing them neatly in the main chamber, he then blocked the entrance with a large boulder to keep the freezing wind out of the caves.

Using a small spark of his lightning, he set the plants ablaze, then crawled closer to the fire to keep warm.

He tended to and kept a close eye on the fire to ensure it didn't go out.

He had no time or energy left to hunt. He knew that tomorrow he would need to find food and fresh water, lest he starve to death.

Afterwards he would need to find a better sanctuary, where he could recover from his wounds.

"They left me!!" Thought Storm grimly.

Growling, he pushed his misery aside. Now wasn't the time to give in to dispair. He could mourn once his situation wasn't so 'precarious' anymore.

"Perhaps somewhere further north?"

He knew there were dragon nesting grounds there, but he never visited them himself and he'd never asked his father for directions to them.

He would have to find them on his own. Until he could find one and convince them to take him in, he would have to fend for himself.

His stomach growled and demanded to be filled. He pushed the feeling aside until his nose picked up the scent of meat.

He scratched though the snow until he uncovered the remains of a moose.

Most of it was just bones, but a few clumps of meat still clung to a few of the ribs. Storm was practically salivating at the sight.

He eagerly teared into the carcass, after what little of the meat was finished, he gathered up the bones and began chewing them up.

Breaking them apart between his jaws so that he can access the marrow.

Afterwards he returned to the fire and curled up beside it.

Eventually his exhaustion bested him and he fell asleep.

The next morning he sat on the edge of the summit and tried to decide where he was going to go.

"No!! Not one more step back!!"

Storm was angrier than he had ever been before.

"Not once did my clan threaten them!! And yet they still chose to slaughter us like animals!!"

All the sacrifices the clan made to avoid antagonizing the humans was for nothing.

"We will never have peace!! Not while they still draw breath!!"

He looked in the direction of Twin Rivers.

"That blight has existedon this world long enough!!"

An example needed to be made. To show the humans that there would be consequences if they continued to turn a blind eye to the brutality of the hunters.

First Twin Rivers!! Then the world!! If the Humans crave blood so much!! Then I'll drown them in their own!!"

He unleashed all his pent up rage in a roar that could be heard for miles and that scared every bird and animal away from the area.

He discharged all the lightning that had accumulated in his body into the sky above him.

The humans that saw this phenomenon forever marked it as an ill omen.

An omen that marked the birth of the dragon that the humans later came to know as the 'Calamity'.
