Chapter 78 - Chapter 78: The Call That Meant More

The shift didn't announce itself.

It didn't arrive with anything obvious—no sudden change in tone, no immediate result from the meeting that could be clearly defined as success or failure.

But something had moved.

Aarav could feel it.

Not in the outcome.

But in the way things were beginning to align again—slowly, carefully, but with direction this time instead of hesitation.

And for once—

That was enough.

He stepped out of the building later than usual, the evening already settled into the city, the lights reflecting off glass and steel in a way that made everything feel distant and contained—but today, the distance didn't feel isolating.

Because his mind wasn't stuck there anymore.

It moved elsewhere.

To her.

He reached for his phone without thinking twice.

The call connected quickly.

"You sound early today," Anaya said softly, a faint smile in her voice even before he spoke.

Aarav exhaled lightly, something in him easing just from hearing her.

"I told you I'd call," he replied.

"You always say that," she teased gently.

"And I meant it," he added.

A small pause followed.

"I know," she said.

And just like that—

The conversation settled into something familiar again.

"It's moving," Aarav said after a moment, his tone quieter now, less guarded.

"The deal?" she asked.

"Yeah," he nodded, even though she couldn't see him. "Not finalized. But… they're not stalling anymore."

"That's good," she replied.

It wasn't exaggerated.

Not overly excited.

Just… genuine.

Aarav leaned slightly against his car, his gaze drifting across the city for a second before returning inward again.

"It is."

There was something else he wanted to say.

Something that had been sitting at the back of his mind since the meeting ended.

But he hadn't decided how to say it yet.

And for a brief moment—

He almost didn't.

But then—

He remembered.

I'm not waiting anymore.

"My parents called," he said.

The words came out steady.

But they changed the atmosphere instantly.

On the other end—

Anaya went quiet.

Not tense.

Not uncomfortable.

Just… attentive.

"What did they say?" she asked gently.

Aarav exhaled slowly, his fingers tightening slightly around his phone.

"They want to meet."

The silence that followed wasn't empty.

It carried meaning.

Layers.

Because this wasn't just about a meeting.

This was about everything that came with it.

"They asked about you?" Anaya said after a moment.

Aarav didn't answer immediately.

"Yes," he admitted.

Another pause.

"And?" she asked.

His jaw tightened slightly—not out of anger, not out of frustration, but because this part wasn't as clear as everything else had been.

"They didn't say much," he said. "But… they didn't avoid it either."

That mattered.

More than it seemed.

Anaya understood that.

"That's a start," she said softly.

Aarav let out a quiet breath.

"Yeah."

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Because both of them knew—

This wasn't simple.

This wasn't just a step forward.

It was a step into something that hadn't fully settled yet.

"Do you want me to come?" she asked.

The question was calm.

No pressure.

No assumption.

Just choice.

Aarav closed his eyes briefly, leaning his head back against the car, the weight of the decision not overwhelming—but present.

"Yes," he said.

No hesitation.

Because this time—

He wasn't dividing his worlds.

He wasn't keeping things separate to make them easier to manage.

He was choosing to bring them together.

And that—

That mattered.

"Okay," Anaya replied.

Simple.

But not small.

"I don't know how they'll react," he added after a moment.

It wasn't uncertainty.

It was honesty.

"I know," she said.

A small pause.

"But I'm not going there for them."

That made him open his eyes.

"I'm going there for you," she continued softly.

No hesitation.

No fear.

Just… clarity.

And something about that—

Something about the way she said it so simply—

Made everything else feel less complicated.

Aarav exhaled slowly, the tension in his shoulders easing just slightly.

"Tomorrow," he said.

"That soon?" she asked, surprised but not unsettled.

"They don't like waiting."

A faint smile touched her lips.

"Neither do you."

Aarav almost smiled.

"Be ready by evening," he added.

"I will."

The call ended soon after.

But the moment didn't.

That night—

The apartment felt the same.

Quiet.

Warm.

But underneath it—

There was something new.

Not tension.

Not fear.

But anticipation.

The kind that didn't rush forward—

But didn't stay still either.

As Anaya stood near the window later that night, her gaze drifting across the city lights, her thoughts weren't scattered.

They were focused.

Because she knew—

This wasn't just another moment in their story.

This was a turning point.

And somewhere behind her—

Aarav stood silently for a second before stepping closer, his presence familiar now, grounding in a way that didn't need to be announced.

"Thinking?" he asked quietly.

Anaya didn't turn immediately.

"Not too much," she replied.

A small pause.

"Just enough."

Aarav stopped beside her, his gaze following hers for a moment before shifting slightly.

"We don't have to go if you're not comfortable."

The words were calm.

But they carried something deeper.

Choice.

Respect.

Anaya turned to look at him.

"I said I would," she reminded him.

A faint pause.

"And I meant it."

Aarav held her gaze for a second longer than usual.

Then nodded.

Because this time—

He believed her.

And more importantly—

He wasn't facing it alone.

Tomorrow—

Wouldn't be easy.

But it wouldn't be uncertain either.

Because whatever happened—

They would walk into it the same way they had started learning everything else.

Together.
