Chapter 123 - Is This Retribution?

In an ordinary hospital room, Li Chunmei slowly regained consciousness.

"Where... where am I?" she mumbled, her eyes blinking open to a moment of dazed confusion.

A passing nurse noticed her condition and hurried to call for a doctor. "Doctor, the patient in bed 14 is awake!"

Soon, the sound of approaching footsteps grew louder. A white-coated doctor, flanked by several medical staff, entered the room and approached Li Chunmei's bedside.

"Li Chunmei, you're awake? How are you feeling?" the doctor asked, glancing at her.

"Why am I here? I just fainted for a moment! You brought me to the hospital to swindle me, didn't you? I'm telling you, I have no money! I won't be swindled by you!" Li Chunmei, now realizing she was in a hospital room and fearing the staff would demand payment, put on a defiant act.

You brought me in here! I didn't come willingly. Don't even think about making me pay!

As she spoke, Li Chunmei struggled to sit up.

She had to get out of this ward immediately.

She wouldn't let these people swindle her out of her money!

"Li Chunmei, bed 14, don't do this! You shouldn't be moving around or leaving the hospital right now! You have bone cancer, and it's advanced. Your condition is very serious."

The doctor said urgently, seeing her state.

"What? Bone... bone cancer?"

And advanced?

Li Chunmei's attempt to sit up froze, and she stared at the doctor in disbelief.

"You're lying! You must be lying, right?"

How could she possibly have cancer?

This doctor must be bluffing, just to make her foolishly spend money on hospitalization.

The doctor's expression turned solemn.

"As a doctor, how could I joke about something like this? Li Chunmei, you've been diagnosed with advanced bone cancer. Your condition is very serious!"

He then glanced around the room.

"By the way, where are your family members? Didn't your husband just leave here? Hurry and call him over. I need to discuss your condition and treatment plan with him properly."

With that, the doctor and several medical staff left, leaving Li Chunmei, who had just received the devastating news, slumped in a daze on the hospital bed.

She had bone cancer, and it was advanced!

Did that mean she was going to die soon?

No!

She didn't want to die!

With this thought, Li Chunmei pulled out her phone to call her husband, Fu Dagui. But as soon as she dialed, she heard the familiar busy tone.

This...

Li Chunmei was dumbfounded:

Fu Dagui had blocked her number!

Sensing something was wrong, Li Chunmei ignored the doctor's warnings and checked out of the hospital, rushing straight to the small inn where they had been renting. But the innkeeper told her that Fu Dagui had already checked out and left.

A sense of dread washed over Li Chunmei. She hurried back to their home in Silver Dragon Village, but when she arrived, the house was in disarray, as if a thief had ransacked it.

She learned from her neighbors that Fu Dagui had returned earlier and ransacked the house as if it had been raided, taking every valuable item. He then left with all the family's savings and valuables.

No one knew where he had gone.

So, had Fu Dagui abandoned her after learning of her serious illness?

*Heh, it's just as the saying goes: "When disaster strikes, even birds of a feather fly in different directions!"*

Overwhelmed by anxiety, anger, and exhaustion, Li Chunmei fainted again.

Her life, now in its final stage due to advanced bone cancer, entered its final countdown. With no money for treatment, she was forced to lie in her dilapidated old house, waiting to die.

Every day, she endured the torment of her illness, feeling pain in every part of her body.

Each bone felt as if it were being gnawed by thousands of ants, the pain piercing and relentless.

In less than three months, the disease had ravaged Li Chunmei to the brink of death.

In her final moments, lying on the creaky wooden bed in her worn-out house, Li Chunmei couldn't hold back the tears of regret:

"Retribution! All of this is retribution!"

Meanwhile, Fu Dagui was living in hell.

A few months earlier, Li Chunmei had suddenly collapsed and was diagnosed with late-stage bone cancer. Fu Dagui immediately began plotting to pack up the family's valuables and flee with all their assets.

In his view, cancer—especially in its late stages—was incurable.

Even if they spent money on hospitalization, it would just be throwing money down the drain. He'd rather spend it on himself.

As for his wife, Li Chunmei, once she was diagnosed with late-stage cancer, Fu Dagui saw her as already dead. He couldn't be bothered to care what happened to her.

Not wanting to end up in prison, Fu Dagui decided to flee when he heard the Fu Family was threatening to sue him. He was determined to get as far away as possible.

So, he took the family's valuables and ran.

However, this "clever" Fu Dagui fell right into the hands of a group of swindlers. Believing their lies about a leisurely, high-paying job with free room and board, he followed them to a mine—only to be immediately detained by the mine owner.

Later, Fu Dagui discovered it was an illegal operation. The "brothers" who had befriended him had sold him to the mine owner for a few thousand yuan, forcing him into hard labor.

From then on, Fu Dagui was trapped in the mine, toiling day and night alongside other laborers.

Even the slightest mistake or delay would earn him a severe beating and verbal abuse from the foreman.

In just a few months, Fu Dagui was reduced to a shadow of his former self. Recently, he fell gravely ill and never recovered, rendering him unable to work.

"Boss, this man is likely beyond saving. What should we do?" A foreman with some medical knowledge checked Fu Dagui's condition and addressed the mine owner.

"Throw him in the mass grave and let him fend for himself! Bah! What bad luck!" The mine owner spat fiercely, waving his hand dismissively.

At his command, several miners scrambled to lift the barely breathing Fu Dagui and carry him toward the mass grave. They tossed him onto the burial ground—a place where countless had died, arriving only to await their deaths—and walked away, dusting their hands.

"Cough, cough... No... Don't! I don't want to die! Please, save me! Cough, cough, cough—" Fu Dagui struggled to call out for help, but no one paid him any heed.

Too weak to even sit up, his futile struggles only caused him to sink deeper into the mire.

"Is this my retribution?" he gasped, his body sinking into the bottomless swamp.

As he spoke, he was fully submerged. His struggles ceased, and his breath faded...
