Chapter 253 - Master Thief Danny Ocean

In a luxurious estate in the northwest suburbs of Las Vegas, Tess stood bathed in soft light.

She wore a crimson lace peignoir, the sheer fabric perfectly accentuating her stunning figure.

On any normal night, her boyfriend—the man she was practically engaged to—would have been utterly captivated.

Terry Benedict was a man who took what he wanted, yet tonight, he barely noticed her.

Ever since they sat down for dinner, Tess had noticed that the Las Vegas casino mogul was completely distracted.

This level of inattention was almost unprecedented.

She had wanted to ask him about it during dinner, but she knew better. After being with him for so long, Tess understood that her current boyfriend was a paranoid, controlling patriarch who did not appreciate being interrogated.

Consequently, she had stayed silent the entire ride back to the estate.

Now, it was time for bed.

Instead of joining her, Terry stood alone by the bedroom window. He held a glass of red wine, staring out at the moonlight with a deeply furrowed brow.

Tess could not hold it in any longer.

"Terry, did something happen?"

Terry Benedict was pulled from his dark thoughts. He did not look angry at the interruption.

He downed the rest of his wine in a single gulp and shook his head.

"It is nothing, Tess."

Despite his words, Terry's mind was still replaying the brutal scene that had unfolded in his casino a few hours earlier.

Ever since he took over the family business and began building his empire on the Strip, he had lived by a strict code.

He was ruthless. He had blood on his hands. But he considered himself a man of principle.

His wrath was reserved strictly for grifters trying to cheat his house or rivals trying to tear down his empire.

He still did not know if the Asian kid was a phantom sent by a rival casino.

But he knew one thing for absolute certain: the kid had not cheated.

Yes, he had played clean.

After the young gambler walked out, Terry had mobilized his entire surveillance team to analyze the footage frame by agonizing frame.

Every single technician on payroll had come to the same conclusion. The kid was a savant. He had taken the house for millions using pure, terrifying skill.

And as for the money?

Terry was starting to believe the kid was telling the truth when he said he did not care about the millions he left on the table.

Reflecting on the encounter, Terry realized the kid carried himself with an aristocratic arrogance. He did not reek of desperation.

More importantly, there was the watch.

The kid had been wearing a timepiece worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

In the luxury world, ultra-high-end watches were notorious for their absurd markups and singular function. They were the ultimate status symbol for people with too much money to burn.

Terry had spent years dealing with billionaires. He knew that most men worth ten million dollars only wore watches worth a few grand.

To wear a piece that expensive into a casino, the kid had to be backed by serious money or serious power.

Terry's men had already tracked the kid back to his hotel, but Terry had not given an order yet.

Should he send a hit squad to break the kid's legs?

Or should he show up personally to offer a formal apology?

For the first time in years, Terry Benedict did not know what to do.

Meanwhile, across the city, a massive warehouse was being converted into a staging ground.

Standing in the center of the chaos was Danny Ocean.

Handsome, refined, and carrying the calm authority of a college professor, the master thief quietly surveyed the operation.

Beside him, a man relentlessly chewing on a handful of snacks was giving his report.

"That Asian kid we saw at the Bellagio this afternoon is a ghost at the tables."

"Cards are chaotic. Even I have to rig the deck if I want to guarantee a high win rate."

"There's no other way around the math."

"But this guy? He pulled millions out of the air in a single afternoon using pure technique. He didn't cheat once."

"He's not a normal civilian, Danny. When we were tailing him later, he almost burned us multiple times."

"He definitely knew he was being followed."

"Because of that, we had to back off. All we have is the name of his hotel."

The man chewing the snacks was Rusty Ryan.

A professional grifter, a master of sleight-of-hand, and Danny Ocean's most trusted partner.

Together, they had pulled off heists that the criminal underworld deemed physically impossible.

Knowing Danny as well as he did, Rusty could already see the gears turning in his friend's head.

"Danny, tell me you aren't thinking about recruiting him."

"I'll admit the kid is a weapon, but look at the facts. He wears a watch worth a quarter-million and just walked away from a six-million-dollar payout like it was pocket change. The guy doesn't need cash."

"Even if we pull this off, his cut would only be around ten million dollars."

"You can't buy a guy like that with chump change."

Danny Ocean remained silent. Rusty had read him perfectly.

Danny absolutely wanted to recruit the handsome, hyper-lethal gambler he had witnessed dismantling Terry Benedict's security team.

Their crew currently consisted of eleven men. Ten were locked in, but the final slot was still technically open.

On paper, Danny had assembled this crew to rob Terry Benedict of one hundred and fifty million dollars in cold, hard cash from his impenetrable vault.

The truth was, Danny did not give a damn about the money.

Years ago, when Danny was caught and sent to prison, his wife Tess had divorced him.

When he finally got out, he discovered that Tess—a brilliant art curator—had moved to Vegas to manage the art gallery at the Bellagio.

Worse, she had started dating the owner.

Terry Benedict.

Seeing his friend's heavy silence, Rusty thought back to the woman he had spotted on the casino floor earlier that day.

He hesitated, then lowered his voice. "I saw your ex-wife, Tess, at the casino today."

"She looks pretty comfortable with Benedict."

"Danny, please tell me you aren't staging the biggest heist in Vegas history just to get back at the guy sleeping with your ex-wife."

The brutal honesty of the question left the master thief momentarily speechless.

After a long silence, Danny shook his head slightly.

"It has nothing to do with her. I just need the money."

Rusty frowned, chewing slowly. He knew a lie when he heard one.

But seeing that Danny was determined to take the secret to his grave, Rusty let it go.

He patted his friend on the shoulder. "I hope you're right."

"Tess went through hell. When you went away, she had to carry all that heat by herself."

"By the time I tried to reach out to her, she had already vanished."

"You guys are divorced. She's built a good life here. Leave it at that."

With that, Rusty turned and walked away.

Some things couldn't be fixed with a conversation.

Rusty knew Danny was going to have to figure this out the hard way.
