Date: June 24, 2012 Time: 9:00 AM Match: India U-19 vs. Pakistan U-19. Location: Kinrara Academy Oval.
The atmosphere was electric. Even though it was a U-19 match, a few thousand expats had gathered. Indian flags and Pakistani flags waved in the stands. Drums were beating.
The Opposition
The Pakistan U-19 team looked intimidating. They were big, aggressive, and loud. Their Captain was Babar Azam. (Yes, that Babar Azam. In 2012, he was a prodigy, already touted as the next big thing).
But the real threat was their bowling attack. Zia-ul-Haq. Left-arm Fast. He was huge. And he was fast. Rumor was he clocked 145 kph. And Azizullah, another pacer who hit the deck hard.
The Toss Babar Azam won the toss. "We will bowl," Babar said calmly. "There is moisture. We will use it."
The Blitz
Unmukt Chand and the opener walked out. Zia-ul-Haq marked his run-up. It was long. He ran in like a wild animal.
Ball 1: 142 kph. Inswinger. Unmukt was late. The ball hit his pad before his bat came down. "HOWZAT!" Umpire raised the finger. 0/1.
Ball 2: The Number 3 (Baba Aparajith) walked in. Zia bowled a bouncer. It flew over the keeper's head. Wides. Raw, uncontrolled pace.
Ball 3: Aparajith poked at a ball leaving him. Edge. Slip. 5/2.
The Indian dugout was stunned. It wasn't just wickets falling. It was how they were falling. The speed was terrifying.
"Sai!" Coach Arun barked. "Pad up. You're next."
Sai was technically Number 4 today. He put on his helmet. His hands were shaking slightly. 142 kph. He had faced 135 in the machine. But a machine doesn't want to kill you. Zia-ul-Haq did.
The Entry
Another wicket fell in the 4th over. Score: 12/3.
Sai walked out. The Pakistani fielders were celebrating. "Arey, another kid!" the keeper laughed. "Zia bhai, send his helmet to the boundary!"
Sai took his guard. He looked at Zia-ul-Haq. Zia was breathing fire.
[SYSTEM ALERT] Threat Level: Maximum. Object Speed: >140 kph. Reaction Window: 0.4 seconds.
The Speed Barrier
Ball 1: Zia ran in. Sai saw the release. Fast. His brain said "Defend." But his body moved at "130 kph speed." By the time his bat came down, the ball had already passed the outside edge. Whoosh. The sound of the ball hitting the keeper's gloves was like a pistol shot.
[DISSONANCE - CRITICAL] Timing Error: Late by 0.05 seconds.
Sai tapped the pitch. It's too fast. My "Perfect Rep" is calibrated for domestic speed. I need to overclock.
Ball 2: Zia aimed for the head. Bouncer. Sai saw it. He tried to duck. But the ball arrived instantly. He barely got his head out of the way. The wind of the ball brushed his grill.
Babar Azam at slip clapped. "Good ball, Zia! He is scared!"
The Calibration
Sai stepped away from the crease. He closed his eyes for a second. The System creates the Perfect Rep based on data. New Data: Speed 142. Adjustment: Trigger movement must happen BEFORE the release.
He changed his stance. He started his back-and-across shuffle while Zia was in his delivery stride, not after.
Ball 3: Zia bowled full, searching for the yorker. Sai was already in position because he moved early. He didn't drive. He just blocked. [CLICK] The ball hit the middle of the SS Ton. Solid.
Zia glared.
The Counter-Attack
Sai survived the first spell. India was 40/3 in 10 overs. Sai was on 12 off 25 balls. Vijay Zol (Left-hander) was at the other end.
The spinners came on. Babar Azam brought himself on. (Off-spin). Sai felt comfortable. Spin was physics. He understood physics.
But then, Babar brought back the pacers from the other end. Azizullah. Short ball. Sai decided he couldn't just survive. The run rate was dying. [SYSTEM MODE: POWER]
He predicted the length. He transferred weight. The Pull Shot.
But 140 kph is unforgiving. Sai made contact, but the ball was heavy. It didn't go for six like in Hyderabad. It went flat. It cleared mid-wicket by inches. FOUR.
Risk, Sai thought. Power isn't enough. I need pace manipulation.
The Babar Azam Interaction
Over 25: Sai was on 45. Babar Azam was fielding at cover. Sai played a drive straight to him. Babar fielded it cleanly and threw it back at the stumps. It missed Sai's head by inches.
"Watch it!" Sai snapped.
Babar smirked. "Run faster, Chotu. Or go home."
Sai stared at him. I will run.
Over 30: Sai reached his 50. A gritty, survivalist 50 against top-tier pace. He didn't raise his bat high. He just nodded to the dressing room.
The End Game
Sai batted until the 40th over. He scored 75 Runs. He eventually got out to a slower ball from Zia (the deception got him).
India posted 245. A fighting total.
Pakistan Chase: Babar Azam scored a classy 50, but the Indian spinners (Harmeet and Aparajith) choked the rest. The game went to the wire. Pakistan needed 10 off the last over. Rush Kalaria bowled tight.
India Won by 5 runs.
The Aftermath
The teams shook hands. Zia-ul-Haq crushed Sai's hand in his grip. " You have a hard head," Zia grunted in Urdu. "Next time, I will hit the stumps."
Sai smiled, wincing at the grip. "Next time, I will hook you."
Babar Azam walked past. He didn't smile. He looked angry at the loss. He looked at Sai. "See you in the Final," Babar said.
Sai walked back to the dressing room. His body was battered. His forearm was blue. But the "Dissonance" was gone. The System had calibrated. 145 kph is no longer a surprise. It is the new normal.
