The transport of siege equipment simply couldn't keep up with the Mountain's bloodthirsty nature.
When the Mountain led his men charging beneath the city walls, something awkward happened—the battlefield suddenly became eerily quiet.
Ordinary arrows couldn't harm the Mountain or the armor covering his body at all, while the powerful ballistae couldn't aim at him standing right beneath the walls—fixed ballistae simply couldn't adjust to such a steep angle.
So the defenders on the walls all focused their attacks on the troops carrying the siege equipment instead.
The Mountain glanced left and right at his cavalry, a wave of irritation rising in his heart.
Lord Lannister had originally ordered him to surround Shili City without attacking, but early this morning, an urgent dispatch arrived, telling him to strike decisively.
The scouts judged that enemy reinforcements were about to arrive. If the Mountain didn't take Shili City quickly, he might be caught in a pincer attack—just like the disastrous defeat at the Battle of Riverrun.
A pincer attack—how ridiculous.
The Mountain scoffed at the scouts' judgment. He looked at the defenders of Shili City—every last one of them so terrified they were about to wet themselves. Did they really have the guts to open the gates and come out to fight him?
Still, Lord Lannister's orders had to be obeyed.
On the battlefield, the Mountain rarely found himself with nothing to do. The current situation felt novel to him, so he dismounted and walked up to the tightly shut city gate.
Boom!
The Mountain took a massive warhammer from one of his men and began smashing the gate with brutal force.
Boom!Boom!
Watching the wooden gate being struck again and again, despair welled up once more in the hearts of Shili City's defenders.
Is this really power a human should have?!
Seven gods above, that monster is about to smash the gate bar to pieces!
Though it was impossible for the Mountain to break down the gate all by himself, the cracks spreading across the wood were like cracks in the people's mental defenses. His actions were intimidating them, tearing their will apart.
When the Mountain's men carrying ladders finally reached beneath the gate, his army erupted in wild cheers.
"Kill them all!"
"Quick! Set the ladders—climb up!"
"Breken family daughters, hehe!"
"Stop dreaming! The Brekens are nobles—only knights like Lord Mountain get to touch them. You lot can have the maids in the castle!"
Shili City's resistance was unexpectedly weak. They already believed the city would become fresh meat for them to feast on.
The Mountain's army was in exceptionally high spirits. Every face was filled with savage excitement—greed and cruelty were the true colors of the Mountain's troops.
Jishiben charged ahead, grabbing a ladder and starting to climb. Being the first to reach the top was dangerous, but Lord Mountain would never be stingy with rewards.
Besides, judging by the level of resistance from these people in Shili City, it wouldn't take much effort at all. Maybe once he got onto the walls, they'd just drop their weapons and kneel to beg for mercy.
The enemy's weakness only stirred up even greater brutality in the Mountain's army.
They went mad, scrambling over one another as they climbed toward the walls.
"Quick, don't let them get up!"
"Stones! Smash them to death!"
"Shoot arrows! Where's the sulfur? The oil? Burn them alive!"
"Think of your families—push the ladders down!"
Harry Rivers and Hendry Breken were shouting themselves hoarse on the walls. Fear filled their hearts; it seemed only by yelling like this could they drive it away.
They ran back and forth along the battlements, rushing to help wherever the soldiers seemed about to collapse.
But their efforts couldn't reverse the one-sided tide of the battle.
Soon, heads of armored soldiers began to pop up from the ladders leaning against the walls.
The defenders of Shili City panicked. Several of them swarmed together, smashing a huge stone down onto one soldier's head, knocking him straight back off the ladder.
But on another ladder, more enemies immediately appeared.
The opening they'd just made gave the Mountain's men their chance. Heavily armored soldiers howled as they climbed onto the walls, faces twisted like madmen, hacking at anyone they saw.
Five or six defenders of Shili City were terrified into fleeing on the spot.
Harry Rivers and Hendry Breken once again showed their lack of professionalism: though they fought at the front themselves, they had no supervisory troops.
The fleeing defenders encountered no resistance at all, running straight back into the city.
Seeing this, how could the remaining defenders of Shili City still have the heart to fight the Mountain's men to the death?
Like falling dominoes, one collapse triggered another. In the blink of an eye, more than half of the defenders on the walls scattered.
Below, there were still defenders carrying stones upward. Seeing their comrades rush down in panic, they cried out in shock, "What happened? We can't hold it anymore?"
"We can't hold it! Everyone's dead—Lord Harry and Lord Hendry both had their heads chopped off by the Mountain!"
Hearing this, the defenders carrying stones immediately dropped them to the ground, preparing to run home and see if they could hide in some hole.
Harry Rivers saw this chaos and cursed furiously, "mmd, who the hell said I'm dead?! Get back here! I'm not dead yet—come back and defend the gate!"
Hendry Breken saw more and more Lannister men on the walls and cursed just as angrily, "So many people, and you only held them for this long? Even if you sent the Mountain's men to catch pigs, they couldn't catch that many!"
With defeat collapsing like a landslide and no way to turn things around, Harry grabbed Hendry. "Let's go!"
"Are we really just giving Shili City to them like this?!"
"Stop talking nonsense—staying here won't save it either!"
When the Mountain climbed onto the walls, the defenders of Shili City completely broke.
The Mountain's body was unimaginably huge. Just standing in front of someone, he could block out the sun, the oppressive pressure nearly suffocating them.
He wielded a long spear and a massive two-handed greatsword as if they were one-handed weapons, and every sweeping strike took away countless lives.
He didn't even use any sophisticated combat techniques—he simply repeated the motion of swinging his weapons.
Massive armor, exaggerated weapons harvesting life nonstop.
The Mountain was like a monster without sensation or emotion, tearing apart everyone who stood in his way.
On the city walls, he stirred up a storm of blood and carnage.
Harry Rivers and Hendry Breken were terrified as well. Seeing the complete collapse on the walls, they lost any will to continue defending the city and retreated back to the core area of the castle.
Just a few minutes after they left, Shili City's gates were opened from the inside by the Mountain's army. Standing on the walls were almost entirely the Mountain's men.
The Mountain's soldiers wore looks of wild ecstasy as they poured into Shili City, beginning their狂欢— their orgy of celebration.
Stumbling along, supporting their now-disheveled armor, the two men found their sisters in a hidden room.
Beth Breken stood up excitedly when she saw them return. "You're back! Did you drive the Mountain away? When will they attack again?"
Hendry Breken gasped for breath. "We can't hold it anymore!"
"What?" Beth couldn't believe it. "The battle hasn't even lasted an hour!"
"You didn't see how terrifying that Mountain is!"
Noise erupted outside. Crying and screams rolled through the city like waves across a lake, spreading to every corner of Shili City.
"Damn it—take these!"
Beth's face turned pale. She pulled out five small pills from her bosom and stuffed them into her sisters' hands. "If you get caught, eat them. Remember—don't let them catch you!"
"What is this, sister? What is this…" The youngest sister spoke through sobs, terrified by the screams outside.
"When the time comes, close your eyes and swallow it. You won't feel any pain!"
After saying that, Beth had no time to care about their emotions. With her brothers and sisters, under the cover of a group of guards, she retreated toward the back gate of Shili City.
Since Shili City could no longer be defended, they could only go to Riverrun to find their father.
But the small path they used to walk every day was now unbearably crowded. Countless wailing people were squeezing toward it.
Men, women, elderly, children…
At the brink of life and death, no one cared about status anymore.
Behind the guards, they struggled forward, inch by inch, as if they could already see the dawn ahead.
"Hey! There are a few well-dressed rich folks here!"
"Good job, Jishiben! So many women—quick, get more people, surround them!"
The sudden shouts made the faces of the Breken family turn deathly pale.
