The new house was bright and warm, with wide windows and soft carpets and a kitchen that didn't overlap with the living room. Lucy ran from room to room, her eyes wide with wonder, claiming the largest bedroom before Nathan could object.
"This one's mine! It's got a window seat!" She threw herself onto the window seat and pressed her face against the glass. "I can see the whole city from up here!"
"Don't fall out the window," Nathan said, but he was smiling.
Mirko, Kuro, and Shiro explored the house in their small forms, their presences humming with quiet satisfaction. Mirko claimed a spot on the sofa. Kuro found a dark corner near the window. Shiro perched on the highest shelf with regal dignity.
"This is a good home," Shiro said quietly.
"Yeah," Nathan said. "It is."
Elise was in the kitchen, making tea. She'd been quiet since the meeting, her expression thoughtful. Nathan joined her, leaning against the counter.
"You've been quiet," he said.
