The crowd was still there at sunrise.
Nathan had not slept. He had sat at the front of the barge all night with Hunter's Insight open, watching the threads packed around the base of the tower on the far shore. None of them had moved. Not once.
When the sun came up, the windows of Veyne stayed dark. No smoke came out of the chimneys. No bakers opened their shutters. Five thousand of its people stood in the courtyard behind the palace and waited.
Halfway through the morning, one of the threads in the crowd went slack and dropped low.
Then another.
"What is it?" Faen asked.
"Someone fell down," Nathan said. "Two people. Old, I think. Their threads went low and they stayed low." He watched for a while. "Nobody is picking them up."
Faen closed his eyes.
Agnes had heard. She didn't say anything. She was looking at the far shore, at the place where the kitchens would be.
