Chapter 20 - Chapter 20

For two years, people had been asking the same question.

What happened to Seong-woo?

His face was still on billboards.

His songs still played everywhere.

His group continued to sell out arenas.

His name remained one of the most recognizable in the country.

But the person people had once known seemed to have disappeared.

The change had been gradual.

At first, fans thought he was simply tired.

Then they noticed he smiled less.

He stopped joking during interviews.

He no longer stayed behind after concerts to greet fans.

The bright energy he had once carried so naturally became something he had to manufacture.

On stage, he still performed perfectly.

He never missed a note.

Never missed a cue.

Never gave the audience a reason to complain.

But people who had followed him for years could tell.

Something was missing.

His spark.

The company knew.

His members knew.

His manager knew.

Eventually, the entire country knew.

There were articles about it.

Speculation.

Rumors.

Some people blamed exhaustion.

Others blamed fame.

Some blamed the pressure of being an idol.

Nobody knew the truth.

Except the people closest to him.

And Nari.

Nari knew.

She had spent two years living with the knowledge that the person she loved was hurting.

She had told herself that leaving him had been the right thing.

She had watched his career continue.

She had watched him perform.

She had watched him smile for cameras.

And every time she saw him, something inside her hurt.

But she never contacted him.

She had made a decision.

She would not become the reason he lost everything.

Even if it meant losing him.

The company meeting happened on a rainy afternoon.

Seong-woo sat quietly at one end of the conference table.

His manager sat across from him.

Several executives were there.

Nobody spoke for a while.

Finally, the company's director placed a folder on the table.

"We need to talk about your future."

Seong-woo looked at him.

"I know."

"You've been struggling for two years."

He didn't deny it.

"You're still performing well."

"I know."

"But you're not happy."

Silence.

The director leaned back.

"We've tried everything."

Seong-woo looked toward the window.

His reflection stared back at him.

Older.

More tired.

Still recognizable.

But not the same boy who had once dreamed of becoming an idol.

His manager spoke quietly.

"There's something we've been thinking about."

Seong-woo looked at him.

"We know about Nari."

His expression changed.

For two years, he had tried not to say her name.

The manager continued.

"We know you're still in love with her."

Seong-woo looked down.

Nobody in the room judged him.

"We can't keep pretending this isn't affecting you."

The director sighed.

"This isn't an easy decision."

Seong-woo waited.

"We've decided we're not going to stop you anymore."

He looked up.

"What?"

"If you want to be with her…"

The director paused.

"Then be with her."

Seong-woo stared at him.

"Are you serious?"

"Yes."

"But my career..."

"Your career isn't more important than your life."

The room became quiet.

"We'll protect you as much as we can," the director continued. "There will be criticism. There will be people who won't accept it. There will be rumors."

Seong-woo's eyes became wet.

"But we're not going to ask you to sacrifice your happiness for the company anymore."

He looked down.

For two years, he had believed that loving Nari meant choosing between her and everything else.

Maybe he had been wrong.

Maybe the choice had never needed to be that cruel.

Nari was walking home when she heard someone call her name.

"Nari!"

She stopped.

Her heart seemed to recognize the voice before her mind did.

She slowly turned around.

Seong-woo stood several meters away.

She couldn't move.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

He looked different.

Not completely.

But enough.

Older.

Tired.

Real.

Nari's eyes immediately filled with tears.

She shook her head.

"No."

Seong-woo took a step toward her.

"Nari."

"Why are you here?"

He smiled faintly.

"I've been looking for you."

She wiped her tears.

"You shouldn't have."

"I know."

"Your career...…"

"I don't care."

She looked at him.

"You have to."

"I did."

His voice trembled.

"For two years."

He took another step.

"I cared about my career. I cared about the company. I cared about what everyone would say."

His eyes filled.

"And I lost you anyway."

Nari covered her mouth.

"I thought leaving me would make you happy."

"It didn't."

"I thought you'd move on."

"I tried."

She cried harder.

"I thought…"

Her voice broke.

"I thought I was protecting you."

"I know."

He stopped in front of her.

"And I let you go."

Nari looked at him through her tears.

"I didn't want you to."

"I know."

"Then why did you?"

"Because you asked me to."

He laughed softly through his tears.

"And because I thought loving you meant letting you go."

Nari shook her head.

"And now?"

Seong-woo looked directly at her.

"Now I know I can love you and still choose my life."

She stared at him.

He reached for her hand.

She hesitated.

Then allowed him to take it.

"I can date you now."

She laughed through her tears.

"You came all this way to say that?"

"Yes."

"You're unbelievable."

"I know."

She looked at him for a long moment.

Then she stepped forward and hugged him.

Seong-woo wrapped his arms around her.

He closed his eyes.

For two years, he had imagined this moment.

He had imagined what he would say.

How he would hold her.

What he would do when he finally saw her again.

None of those plans mattered.

Because she was there.

That was enough.

The news broke three weeks later.

SEONG-WOO CONFIRMS RELATIONSHIP WITH WRITER NA-RI

Within minutes, social media exploded.

Some fans celebrated.

Others were angry.

Some questioned why he had hidden the relationship.

Others accused Nari of ruining his career.

Then another headline appeared.

SEONG-WOO AND NA-RI ENGAGED

The reaction became even louder.

The company released a statement that same evening.

They confirmed the relationship.

They also confirmed that the couple intended to marry.

But the statement contained something else.

The company announced that it would take legal action against individuals who issued credible threats, stalked the couple, spread malicious falsehoods, or attempted to endanger either of them.

For once, Seong-woo didn't hide.

He stood beside Nari.

They faced the world together.

Not everyone approved.

They didn't need everyone to.

For the first time, they weren't asking permission to love each other.

Months later, the wedding day arrived.

The venue was filled with flowers.

The guests slowly took their seats.

Seo-ah arrived with Ji-hoon and Do-hun.

Mr. Yun came with them.

Nari's mother sat near the front.

Her younger brother sat beside her, looking unusually emotional.

Seo-ah smiled when she saw Nari's mother.

They exchanged a warm embrace.

"How are you feeling?" Seo-ah asked.

"I'm nervous."

"You'll be fine."

Nari's mother laughed.

"That's easy for you to say."

Ji-hoon stood nearby with Do-hun in his arms.

Do-hun was more interested in the flowers than the wedding.

"Appa."

"Yes?"

"Can I eat the cake?"

"Not yet."

"Why?"

"Because it's not time."

Do-hun frowned.

Seo-ah laughed.

"Give him five minutes."

Ji-hoon shook his head.

"He's already planning the cake."

The music began.

Everyone turned toward the entrance.

Nari appeared.

Seong-woo stood at the altar.

For a moment, he simply stared at her.

Two years.

Two years of silence.

Two years of missing her.

Two years of watching her from a distance.

And now she was walking toward him.

His eyes filled with tears.

Nari smiled.

The same smile he remembered from when they were teenagers.

The same girl who once sat beside him beneath a shooting star and wished for his dreams to come true.

Only now, they were older.

They had lost each other.

Found each other.

And chosen each other again.

When she reached him, he took her hand.

His fingers trembled.

She whispered:

"Are you crying?"

He laughed softly.

"Maybe."

She smiled.

"I love you."

He looked at her.

"I've loved you for a long time."

The ceremony continued.

Their vows were simple.

No grand promises that life would always be easy.

No promise that nothing would ever hurt.

Only a promise to stay.

To talk.

To choose each other.

Again and again.

When they finally exchanged rings, the room filled with applause.

Seo-ah wiped her tears.

Ji-hoon smiled beside her.

Mr. Yun clapped.

Do-hun looked around, confused by everyone's excitement.

Then the music changed.

Seong-woo turned toward Nari.

He smiled.

And she smiled back.

The two of them walked down the aisle together.

Outside, cameras waited.

Fans waited.

The world waited.

But for a few seconds, none of that mattered.

They had finally reached the place they had been trying to find since they were young.

Not a perfect life.

Not a life without pain.

Just a life where they didn't have to let go of each other to protect one another.

Seo-ah watched them disappear through the doors.

Ji-hoon slipped his hand into hers.

She looked at him.

"What?"

He smiled.

"Nothing."

She leaned against his shoulder.

The doors closed behind the newly married couple.

And somewhere beyond them, life continued.

Messy.

Unexpected.

Beautiful.

People lost each other.

People found each other.

Some wounds remained.

Some healed.

Some stories ended.

Others began.

And perhaps that was the only promise life ever really made.

That winter would not last forever.

Home is usually a person.

A place where they don't have to perform.

A place where they don't have to earn their right to stay.

A place where they can finally exhale.
