Chapter 8 - Chapter 8

Ji-hoon noticed it before Seo-ah did.

The swelling in her feet had become worse.

She tried to pretend it wasn't bothering her, but he saw the way she shifted her weight when she stood up and how she massaged her ankles whenever she thought nobody was looking.

The morning of her antenatal appointment, Seo-ah walked toward the entrance and suddenly stopped.

A new pair of shoes sat neatly on the shoe rack.

Comfortable.

Soft.

Designed for pregnant women.

For a moment, she simply stared.

Then she smiled.

A small smile.

The kind that arrived quietly.

When she looked up, Ji-hoon was picking up his lab coat from the couch.

"Did you buy these?"

He glanced at the shoes.

"Your feet are swollen."

As if that explained everything.

Seo-ah laughed softly.

When they got into the car, she turned toward him.

"Thank you."

Ji-hoon kept his eyes on the road.

But a small smile appeared on his lips.

"You're welcome."

Later that evening, Nari called.

"Come with me to a concert."

"A concert?" Seo-ah asked.

"Please."

Seo-ah agreed.

She knew Nari attended almost every concert by the same group.

What she didn't know was why.

The concert venue was already crowded when they arrived.

Lights flashed across the stage.

Fans screamed.

Music filled the arena.

Seo-ah watched Nari carefully.

Unlike everyone else, Nari never rushed toward the front.

She always stayed near the back.

As if simply being there was enough.

Then the band appeared.

The crowd erupted.

And for a brief moment....

The leader of the idol group, Seong-woo, looked directly toward the audience.

Toward Nari.

His expression froze.

Only for a second.

Then he returned to his professional smile.

Seo-ah noticed.

"Nari."

"Hm?"

She nudged her gently.

"Still obsessed with him?"

Nari laughed.

A sad laugh.

"It wasn't obsession."

Her eyes never left the stage.

"It was the first time I loved someone with all my heart."

She swallowed.

"And the first time my ego didn't exist."

Seo-ah didn't know what to say.

So she simply listened.

After the concert ended, a security guard approached them.

"Miss Nari?"

Nari stiffened.

"The group leader would like to see you backstage."

Her eyes widened.

Immediately she shook her head.

"No."

But after several minutes of persuasion, and Seo-ah practically pushing her forward, she finally agreed.

The walk backstage felt longer than it should have.

When she entered the room, Seong-woo was already waiting.

For a moment neither spoke.

Years of memories stood between them.

"It's been a long time," he finally said.

Nari smiled politely.

"It has."

"How have you been?"

"I'm doing well."

"And you?"

"I'm fine."

Silence returned.

Seong-woo rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly.

"So…"

He laughed softly.

"What are you doing here?"

Nari smiled.

"I escorted a friend."

A lie.

She knew it.

He knew it.

For years she had attended almost every concert.

Not for the music.

For him.

But some truths were too embarrassing to say aloud.

"Oh."

That was all he replied.

Then another silence settled between them.

This time heavier.

"You know…" Seong-woo began quietly.

"I loved you a lot back then."

Nari looked down.

"I know."

His eyes searched hers.

"Did you move on?"

The question shattered something inside her.

No.

She hadn't.

Not completely.

Not even close.

But she smiled anyway.

"Yes."

The lie tasted bitter.

Seong-woo stared at her for a long moment.

Then he asked:

"Did you ever love me?"

Nari laughed.

A tear slipped down her cheek.

"Is that even a question?"

His chest tightened.

"Nari…"

She shook her head.

"Let it go, Seong-woo."

Her voice trembled.

"It's been years."

She looked at him.

"We loved each other."

The words hurt to say.

"But what was the point of that love when all we did was hurt each other?"

Seong-woo lowered his eyes.

For the first time that evening, he looked defeated.

When he finally looked back at her, his voice was barely above a whisper.

"Is this really the end?"

Nari couldn't answer.

Because she didn't know.

Because some endings happen long before people admit them.

And some loves never truly leave.

They simply become quieter.

Seeing her silence, Seong-woo forced a smile.

"Then…"

He hesitated.

"Can I at least have your contact?"

"Just as an old friend."

At that, Nari finally cried.

The tears she had been holding back all evening escaped.

Seong-woo took a careful step forward.

And gently wiped one away.

Seo-ah was waiting in the parking lot when Nari finally emerged.

"Sorry for keeping you waiting."

"It's okay."

They got into the car.

Nari inserted the key.

But she couldn't start the engine.

Her hands shook.

The tears returned.

And suddenly she was sobbing.

Years of pretending.

Years of moving on.

Years of lying to herself.

All collapsing at once.

"Why…" she cried.

"Why did I say things I didn't mean?"

Seo-ah didn't answer immediately.

She simply placed a hand on Nari's back.

Gentle.

Steady.

Just like Ji-hoon had done for her.

"It's okay."

Nari lowered her head onto the steering wheel and cried harder.

And for the first time in years…..

She allowed herself to grieve the love she had never truly let go.
