Lively chatter lingered in the cramped home long after everyone settled inside.
Toby called toward the rear room, his voice soft against the plain wooden walls. "Lila, your brother and our friends have come to visit."
No answer drifted out from within.
He turned back to the group with an apologetic smile. "She is not home right now. Whenever she is gone at this hour, she goes next door to help the elderly grandmother with her work. I will head out and bring her back quickly."
"Take all the time you need," Hannah replied gently. "May I borrow your kitchen while you are away? I would like Ricky to help prepare lunch for all of us."
"You are more than welcome," Toby answered at once.
"Do not worry about the tight space either. Treat this house as your own." With that he stepped out the front door and hurried down the narrow alley.
Maverick moved straight to the kitchen without delay.
