The smoke in the warehouse basement finally cleared, leaving behind a heavy, cold silence.
The defeated cultists lay motionless on the stone floor, the twelve rescued children huddled together in trembling silence, and the cult leader had vanished without a single trace.
Hannah stood still, her hands still faintly warm from the dragon fire she'd channeled. Inside her cloak, Ren was fidgeting restlessly, annoyed and full of his usual sharp pride.
"Ugh, he ran away like a coward. I should've burned his silly hood off before he could teleport," Ren grumbled directly into her ear, loud and clear for only her to hear.
"Don't worry, Hannah — I can track his filthy dark magic stench anywhere. It reeks so bad I could find him even if I was blindfolded."
She kept her face calm, letting only her eyes soften for a tiny split second, used to his cocky but loyal tone.
