Genevieve had always been sharp when it came to reading people, and she caught Helena's irritation with me right away.
She jumped in quickly to defuse the tension. "Your Highness, what an incredible honor that you've found time in your packed schedule to visit us. I'm truly touched. That you've noticed Bella—it's such a gift to our family."
While she spoke, she gave my sleeve a gentle pull.
I ducked my head and murmured, "Your Highness, I'm truly grateful for your attention."
Helena's eyes stayed fixed on my respectful stance.
Something shifted in her face—maybe a memory surfacing—and I caught a flicker of defeat in her expression.
She raised her hand slightly. "Both of you, please stand."
When I looked up, the ice in Helena's gaze had melted away. A small smile played at her lips, though it never touched her eyes.
