Ivy's guilt was written all over her face as she avoided Jasper's searching gaze, retreating to the corner like a scolded child. Jasper studied her with growing bewilderment.

This wasn't like her at all. Usually, she'd throw herself into his arms the moment he walked through the door. Today, she might as well have been a stranger.

Peggy glided forward with a glass of water, setting it down beside Jasper with practiced silence.

Pushing his confusion aside, Jasper fixed his attention on Ivy. "Do you still have that silver bell I gave you years ago?"

Relief flooded Ivy's features when she realized this wasn't about Kenneth. Her shoulders relaxed as she searched her memory.

Right—that hideous bell pendant he'd insisted on giving her.

The thing had been crude and artless, nothing like the delicate jewelry she preferred. She'd played with it briefly before tossing it somewhere and forgetting about it entirely.

"Why bring that up now, Jasper?"
