Bella's POV
Derek's face shifted, reluctance flickering in his gaze.
A strained smile crossed his lips. "Might I inquire if there's an issue with the ledgers?"
I shook my head. "There isn't."
Relief washed over Derek as he smiled more naturally. "Previously, we conducted audits every six months with advance notice. Your immediate demand leaves little time for proper preparation."
I traced the edge of the deed box with my fingertip, offering a sweet smile. "You receive payment for your duties. If you're incapable, I'll simply hire someone who is."
Derek went rigid, as though my words hadn't registered. "Lady Bella... what are you implying?"
"Lady Bella recognizes your advancing years and declining abilities, so she's graciously allowing you to step down," Penny interjected, extending a coin purse toward him.
"This is Lady Bella's personal gift, acknowledging your years of household service."
