Bella's POV
I met Victor's challenge with a cool smile. "Your Highness, you'll have to excuse me. Growing up in the countryside taught me to value my freedom. I'm not cut out for cage life, no matter how golden it might be."
My response was measured—polite but firm, giving him neither submission nor attitude.
Victor's frown deepened. "Nobody tells me no. Not even you. You'd better think this through because my patience is running out."
I could practically see the wheels turning in his head. So what if she's got a title? She's still just a woman. If the Emperor asks questions, I'll smooth things over. Does this nobody really think she can stand up to me?
His arrogance was almost amusing. He had that look men get when they think women are just playing games, putting on some act to get their attention.
"Your Highness, please consider me unworthy of such generous attention," I replied, keeping my voice level and my face blank.
