Amara's POV
"Jasper, damn, didn't know you had it in you to get all starry-eyed!" Penelope said, eyeing me like I was some prize at a county fair. "Gotta say, though, our new girl's straight-up gorgeous. Not like me—y'all treat me like I'm just one of the bros."
"Piss off!" Jasper laughed, kicking her chair playfully.
Penelope flashed that cocky smile of hers. "How about this? After school, let's hit up a diner, kick back, and get to know our new classmate."
Jasper's face lit up as his eyes found mine.
I finally bothered to look up from my desk.
My gaze swept over them slowly, taking their measure. "Got plans. Don't sweat it."
Penelope's eyes gleamed, but she kept that devil-may-care attitude intact. "What, we not good enough for you or something?"
I held her stare, letting the silence stretch before nodding. "Yup. Your invite's not worth my time."
"What?!" Penelope started to snap, but the bell sliced through her words.
