Chapter 29 - Chapter 14: The Dead Sea of Dust

The boundary between the Iron Peaks and the Ash-Wastes wasn't a line on a map; it was a wall of silence.

One step, the ground was solid magnetite and whistling wind. The next, Zayn's boot sank four inches into a substance that wasn't quite sand and wasn't quite dirt. It was the pulverized remains of a civilization that had been forgotten before the first High Sect was even a whisper.

[LOCATION: THE ASH-WASTES]

[WARNING: QI-VOID DETECTED]

[PLANETARY SYNC: 8% (CRITICAL LOW)]

Zayn stumbled, his knees buckling. The constant, rhythmic "thump-thump" of the planet's heart—the sound that had been his lullaby since he unlocked his core—suddenly went mute. It was like a radio being unplugged in the middle of a song.

"It's... gone," Zayn gasped, clutching his chest. The amber veins in his arms flickered and dimmed, turning a muddy, bruised grey.

"The Wastes don't give, Zayn," Liora said, her voice sounding thin and distant in the heavy air. She didn't sink into the ash; she seemed to hover just above it, her staff vibrating with a faint, protective light. "The ground here is dead. It has no memory, no pulse, and no mercy. If you want power here, you have to bring it with you."

Zayn stood up, spitting a mouthful of grey grit onto the ground. He looked at his hands. The obsidian knuckles he'd forged were cold. Without the Mantle Flow to feed them, they felt like lead weights tied to his wrists.

[INTERNAL BURN: ACTIVE (RELYING ON STACKED RESERVES)]

[ESTIMATED ENDURANCE: 4 HOURS]

"Four hours," Zayn muttered. "Then I'm just a boy in a grey desert."

"Then we'd better find the 'Silt-Dwellers' before your clock runs out," Liora said, pointing her staff toward a horizon that was nothing but a blur of bone-white sky and charcoal-grey dunes.

They walked for hours. In the Wastes, distance was an illusion. There were no trees to mark the path, no birds to break the silence. There was only the skritch-skritch of their footsteps and the occasional hollow moan of a "Dust-Devil" spinning in the distance.

Suddenly, the ground beneath Zayn's feet didn't just sink. It inhaled.

"Liora, back!" Zayn yelled, shoving her away just as a massive geyser of grey ash erupted in front of him.

Out of the dust rose a creature that looked like a nightmare made of discarded needles and dried parchment. It was a Silt-Wraith—a scavenger that had evolved to hunt the few things foolish enough to cross the Wastes. It was fifteen feet long, with a segmented body and a head that was nothing but a gaping, circular maw lined with thousands of vibrating, glass-like teeth.

[TARGET ACQUIRED: GREY-VALLEY SILT-WRAITH (LVL 36)]

[STATUS: QI-STARVED (AGGRESSIVE)]

The Wraith didn't roar. It hissed, a sound that bypassed Zayn's ears and vibrated directly into his skull. It lunged, its body moving through the ash as if it were water.

Zayn tried to call on the Geomagnetic Grasp, but nothing happened. There was no metal in the sand. No magnetic pull. No earth to answer his call.

"Damn it!" Zayn snarled.

He moved to punch, but the ash beneath him shifted, robbing him of his footing. The Wraith's maw slammed into his shoulder, the glass teeth shredding his skin.

[HEALTH: 82%]

[STATUS: BLEEDING (MINOR)]

"Zayn! Don't look for the planet!" Liora shouted, her staff glowing as she deflected a secondary lunge from the Wraith's tail. "Look for the Void! You are the Scourge! If the world won't give you heat, take it!"

Zayn gritted his teeth, the pain in his shoulder sparking a familiar, jagged fire in his gut. If the ground was dead, he would be the spark that brought the funeral to life.

He didn't reach down. He reached in.

[TECHNIQUE EVOLUTION: INTERNAL BURN -> VOID-COMBUSTION]

Zayn grabbed the Wraith's upper lip as it came in for a second bite. His obsidian knuckles didn't glow red this time. They turned a terrifying, soul-sucking violet. Instead of pushing heat into the creature, he began to pull.

He sucked the kinetic energy from the Wraith's movement. He drained the chemical heat from its cold blood. He turned himself into a vacuum.

The Wraith froze. Its segmented body began to turn brittle, white frost forming over its grey scales in a matter of seconds. It tried to pull away, but Zayn was an anchor.

"My turn," Zayn hissed.

He slammed his other fist into the creature's frozen snout.

[TECHNIQUE: POINT-RESONANCE – SHATTER-POINT]

Because the Wraith was now frozen solid, the vibration traveled with 100% efficiency. The creature didn't just die; it detonated into a million tiny shards of ice and ash.

[LEVEL UP: 32 -> 33]

[NEW PASSIVE UNLOCKED: VOID-SIPHON (STAGE 1)]

Zayn fell to his knees, gasping for air. The violet glow in his knuckles faded, leaving them blacker than before. He felt... full. The energy he'd stolen from the Wraith was cold and bitter, but it was power.

[INTERNAL BURN RESERVES: REPLENISHED (110%)]

"You're learning," Liora said, walking over to him. She looked down at the pile of shards. "In the Wastes, you don't survive by being a volcano. You survive by being the winter."

Zayn stood up, wiping the frost from his knuckles. He looked out at the endless grey desert. For the first time since entering the Wastes, he didn't feel like a victim of the silence. He felt like the one who owned it.

"How much further to the settlement?" Zayn asked.

"Look up," Liora whispered.

Zayn looked. In the distance, silhouetted against the pale, dying sun, was a city built of giant ribcages and rusted ship-hulls. It hung from the side of a massive, jagged crater like a cluster of barnacles.

[LOCATION DISCOVERED: THE SCAPELANDS (CITY OF THE FALLEN)]

"Welcome to the end of the world, little earthquake," Liora said. "Try not to break anything. These people don't have much left to lose."
