Chapter 9 - Some Things Find Their Way Back

Dear Diary,

I couldn't stop thinking about it.

What happened next?

I asked myself the question again.

Why can't I remember?

What did Ezra say next?

I stared at the diary lying open in front of me.

I tried to remember.

I really did.

But it was like there was a wall in my mind.

I could remember everything before that moment.

The laughter.

Amara teasing me.

Ezra carrying my English book.

The whole conversation.

Everything.

Except what happened next.

I frowned.

"How can I forget something I actually wrote down?"

I turned the diary over and looked at the pages again, hoping that somehow the missing page would appear.

Nothing.

I sighed.

Maybe I had been thinking about it for too long.

I looked at the time.

I was tired.

"Okay, Precious. I'll find it when I'm less busy."

I closed the diary and placed it beside my pillow.

I decided to stop thinking about it for the night.

Tomorrow was my first day in school.

I needed to sleep.

Maybe I'd remember everything in the morning.

At least, that was what I told myself.

The next morning, I got ready for school.

It was my first day.

I packed my things and headed to class.

I sat down and listened to the teacher.

I copied my notes and tried to concentrate.

But I still couldn't stop thinking about my roommate.

She hadn't resumed yet.

I wondered when she would finally arrive.

Maybe she was coming later.

Maybe tomorrow.

I didn't even know what she looked like yet.

I sighed and tried to focus on the lesson.

Then my phone vibrated.

I looked down.

A message had popped up.

It was from my best friend.

Amara.

I clicked on the voice note.

Her familiar voice came through.

"I'm on my way to the dorm."

I was about to smile when she added,

"Your roommate is here."

I froze.

My roommate?

I stared at my phone.

How did she know I was her new roommate?

I asked myself.

Amara and I hadn't really talked after our valedictory service.

We still viewed each other's stories.

Sometimes, we saw little moments from each other's lives.

But we hadn't actually talked in a long time.

So how did she know?

Maybe the Matron, Mrs. Grace, gave her my number.

That had to be it.

I quickly typed a reply.

"Wait… you're my roommate?"

The three dots appeared almost immediately.

Then her reply came.

"Yes of Course "

My eyes widened.

I stared at the screen in disbelief.

Amara?

My roommate?

I couldn't believe it.

Of all the people I could have gotten as a roommate, it had to be Amara.

The same Amara I used to do everything with.

The same Amara who called herself my vice captain.

The same Amara I hadn't properly spoken to in so long.

For a moment, I didn't even know what to say.

Life really had a strange way of bringing people back into your life.

And somehow, Amara was coming back into mine.

This time, not just as my best friend.

But as my roommate.

I looked at the message again.

I still couldn't believe it.

I couldn't wait for my lectures to end.

When school finally ended, I couldn't wait to get back to the dorm.

I wasn't sure what the reunion was going to be like.

It had been so long since we had properly talked.

Would it be awkward?

Would we just say hi and move on?

I honestly didn't know.

When I got to the dorm, I opened the door slowly.

And there she was.

Amara.

She was arranging some of her things on the bed.

The moment she looked up and saw me, she froze.

I froze too.

For a few seconds, neither of us said anything.

Then she smiled.

"Precious?"

I laughed softly.

"Amara?"

She immediately walked toward me.

"I can't believe you're actually my roommate!"

"Me neither!"

We both laughed.

Just like that, the awkwardness disappeared.

She pulled me into a hug.

"I've missed you!"

"I've missed you too."

She pulled away and looked at me.

"Look at us. From school friends to roommates."

I laughed.

"Life really planned this one."

She nodded.

"Honestly."

I looked around the room.

Her things were already everywhere.

"Wait, you already started arranging?"

"Of course. Do you think I came here to decorate the room with my eyes?"

I burst out laughing.

"Nothing has changed."

"What?"

"You."

She smiled.

"Neither have you."

For the first time that day, I felt completely relaxed.

Maybe having Amara as my roommate wasn't such a bad thing after all.

Maybe it was exactly what I needed.

I sat on my bed and looked at her.

For a moment, I remembered the old diary.

The old school.

The old Amara.

Ezra.

The laughter.

That missing page.

I frowned slightly.

There was still something I couldn't remember.

Something I knew was waiting for me somewhere in those old pages.

But for now, I pushed it away.

I had a new school.

A new room.

And somehow, the same old friend beside me.

Maybe some things really do find their way back to us.
