Chapter 14 - Chapter 13 – The Gathering of the Loyal

The morning after the skirmish was quiet, but the air inside the fort was heavy with tension.

Kael stood in the courtyard, watching Selene test her bow. Every arrow she fired struck its target cleanly, burying itself deep into the old wooden boards. Her movements were calm and precise, like someone who had lived in battle her entire life.

"You didn't hesitate yesterday," Kael said as he approached her. "Why?"

Selene lowered her bow.

"I've been moving between villages for months," she replied. "Watching the kingdom rot from the inside. Soldiers abusing people. Lords stealing from farmers. When I heard about a prince who fought his own men to protect villagers… I wanted to see if it was true."

"And?" Kael asked.

She met his eyes. "It was."

Nearby, Ryn was already drilling the others, pushing them to hold their stances longer, to strike harder. Lyra struggled but refused to give up, wiping sweat from her brow and continuing.

Kael felt something strange stirring in his chest.

This wasn't just survival anymore.

This was becoming something real.

He climbed onto a broken stone platform at the center of the fort

.

"Everyone," Kael called.

They gathered, Selene included.

"You all chose to stay," Kael said. "That means something. It means loyalty. And loyalty deserves a purpose."

He spread his arms, gesturing to the walls, the towers, the training yard.

"This fort will no longer be a ruin. It will be a refuge. A place for those who refuse to kneel to fear."

Ryn smirked. "So you're finally giving this place a name?"

Kael thought for a moment.

"Loyalty," he said. "That's what this will be called. Not just a base… but a symbol."

Selene's eyes widened slightly.

"A bold name," she said. "But fitting."

Kael nodded. "People will come. The crown will try to crush us. But as long as we stand together, we will not fall."

From that day on, training intensified. Selene helped Kael refine his combat awareness, showing him how to track enemies from afar. Ryn trained the others in close combat. Lyra surprised everyone with her speed.

At sunset, Kael stood once more on the tower.

His enemies were growing.

But so was his strength.

And for the first time, Kael no longer felt alone.
