Chapter 17 - Plans For The Future

I noticed the shift before anyone said a word.

It was in the pauses.

The looks that lingered too long, then slid away when I glanced up.

The way conversations stopped when I entered a room and resumed only after I'd left.

They didn't need to announce it. I wasn't stupid.

The way eyes tracked me like I was a problem that needed solving. The way tension clung to the air thicker than wolf musk.

They were talking.

About me.

Of course they were.

It was naïve to think they wouldn't eventually get there. Five alpha kings, one she-wolf, extinction breathing down their necks like a curse. At some point, the conversation was always going to turn into logistics.

Who goes first.How it happens.How many pups.How fast.

How I would fix everything.

They didn't bother looping me in—probably thought it would be "too much" for me. As if I hadn't spent my entire life reading rooms to survive. As if I hadn't learned how to watch shadows and listen through walls just to stay alive.
