Chapter 4 - CHAPTER 4:

Hours pass in blur as I stay by Jeremy side, refusing to leave. Jeremy lay motionless beneath the white blanket, his face pale, a bandage wrapped around part of his forehead. As the Morning sun rises, the doctor enters the room. "Mrs. Carter?" He says in a low voice. I nod, standing up to look at the Doctor.

The room was quiet. Too quiet. The only sound of the machines beeping softly beside the bed.

The doctor finally speaks. "He was brought in several hours ago right after the accident. Thats why we were able to handle stabilize his condition. But..."

"BUT WHAT?" I almost shout.

The doctor's expression remain neutral. "He might be unconscious for a long time."

My stomach dropped. "Unconscious? For how long? Hours? Days?"

The doctor sigh. "I can't answer that Mrs. Carter. Even we don't know when he will wake up. The most significant concern is trauma to the head. There are also other injuries consistent with the incident, but we've treated those.

My throat tightened. I ask in hicked voice.

"Will he recover? When? How long???"

The doctor pause because answering. "The brain is complicated. Recovery can take time. We won't know the full extent of the impact until he regains consciousness. Until then we will monitor him everyday to check any process."

The room suddenly felt smaller. I look at Jeremy's pale face. Tears rolling down my cheeks. "Can he hear me? Or feel when i touch his hand?"

"Some patients can process familiar voices. We simply don't know.

I moved closer to the bed. "Jeremy..."

Nothing. No movement. No response.

Just the steady beeping of the monitor. I couldn't stop myself, i hold his cold, bandage covered hand and sob into his palm. "He was fine yesterday," i whispered. "We were supposed to have dinner. You said you have something to tell me!"

The doctor lowered his gaze. "I'm sorry."

Then I noticed something on the bedside table. A bouquet of white lilies. Fresh. Beautiful. Expensive.

I stop crying. Confusion flickered across my face. "I didn't bring those."
