Chapter 3 - The present day

Author's Note

( Before you begin, I'd like to share a small note.

(The opening chapters are intentionally slower, focusing on character development, emotions, and the ideas that shape the world. If the beginning feels quiet, I ask for a little patience. The story gradually builds toward bigger mysteries, higher stakes, and a much faster pace.)

(This novel is written for readers who enjoy depth, mystery, psychological elements, and a gradual buildup rather than nonstop action from the very first chapter.)

(If you'd rather get to the main story quickly, you can skip a few parts of the early chapters. as it will save your time . )

(However, as the author, I recommend reading them, as they'll help you better understand the characters and make later moments far more meaningful.)

(Thank you for giving this story a chance.

I hope you enjoy the journey.)

Let's begin...

Chapter 1 — A Mind Beyond the Classroom (Part 1)

The morning sun rose steadily across an endless blue sky, bathing the quiet streets in a warm golden glow.

At the corner of the road leading to the academy stood a seventeen-year-old boy.

A school bag rested loosely over one shoulder as a gentle breeze brushed through his long black hair. His calm eyes remained fixed on a single wildflower blooming beside the roadside.

Small.

Fragile.

Silent.

Yet undeniably beautiful.

For a brief moment, everything around him seemed to disappear.

The distant voices of students...

The passing cars...

Even the flowing wind...

None of it reached him.

His face was so calm that it almost appeared devoid of emotion.

His name was...

Yamahasi Saino.

The boy everyone admired...

Yet barely anyone truly knew.

A cool breeze drifted through the streets, carrying the cheerful voices of students making their way toward the academy.

Some laughed loudly.

Some complained about unfinished assignments.

Others excitedly discussed club activities, examinations, or their plans for the weekend.

It was just another ordinary morning.

Then—

"Oi, Saino!"

A familiar voice shattered the silence.

Saino slowly turned around.

A white-haired boy came running toward him, waving enthusiastically as though greeting someone he hadn't seen in years. His bright smile stood in complete contrast to Saino's expressionless face.

He was—

Kamen Yagami.

Saino's childhood friend.

His best friend.

And perhaps...

The only person capable of pulling Saino back to reality.

Yagami stopped beside him, slightly out of breath before breaking into a grin.

"Were you planning to admire that flower until graduation? At this rate, we're going to be late."

Saino quietly looked at him for a moment before giving a small nod.

"...Let's go."

The two began walking side by side.

After a few moments of silence, Yagami glanced at him.

"Were you thinking about something again?"

Saino's eyes drifted back toward the flower one last time.

"I think..."

"I was just confessing my love to nature."

Yagami froze.

"...Love?"

He slowly placed a dramatic hand over his chest before staring at Saino in exaggerated disbelief.

"Is that so?"

A second later, he burst into laughter.

"You've become even weirder than before."

He shook his head with a helpless smile.

"Ah, whatever. Come on. We're seriously going to be late."

"...Yeah."

Saino quietly replied.

Soon, the enormous campus unfolded before them.

Towering glass buildings reflected the morning sunlight like mirrors.

Students crossed between different departments and academic wings.

Research drones floated silently above the central courtyard, monitoring the campus with quiet precision.

Everything about the academy radiated excellence.

Yet somehow...

Saino felt nothing.

The first bell echoed across the campus.

Moments later—

Classroom 3-A.

The room buzzed with the sounds of another ordinary lesson.

Books lay open across every desk.

Pens moved steadily across notebooks.

At the front of the room, the teacher explained a complex mathematical theorem while elegant equations appeared one after another across the digital board.

Almost everyone listened carefully.

Almost.

Near the window sat Saino.

His cheek rested lazily against one hand as his eyes wandered beyond the classroom.

Outside...

White clouds drifted peacefully across the endless sky.

His gaze followed them in silence.

Not because they were beautiful.

But because his thoughts had already left the classroom.

How did this universe truly begin?

If a Creator exists... then who created the Creator?

And if no Creator exists... why has humanity spent thousands of years searching for one?

Questions.

Questions without answers.

Questions no textbook could explain.

"...Saino."

The teacher's voice echoed through the classroom.

There was no response.

"...Saino."

The room gradually fell silent.

Saino blinked once before slowly turning toward the front of the class.

The teacher offered an awkward smile.

"Would you mind answering the question?"

Saino quietly stood.

His expression never changed.

He hadn't heard the question.

Should I ask him to repeat it?

After a brief pause, he dismissed the thought.

No... I'm not in the mood to answer.

He simply remained silent.

Whispers immediately spread throughout the classroom.

"Did he actually not know?"

"Impossible."

"That's Yamahasi Saino."

"He always knows the answer."

Across the room...

The student ranked third quietly adjusted his glasses.

Harusa.

Impossible.

For anyone else... perhaps.

But not him.

He definitely knows the answer.

Something else is occupying his mind.

Or perhaps... he simply doesn't wish to answer.

The teacher frowned slightly.

"Saino... are you feeling unwell?"

"...Just a slight headache."

"I see."

After a brief pause, the teacher nodded with understanding.

"Go outside and get some fresh air."

Saino gave a small nod before walking toward the classroom door.

Just as he reached it—

"Sensei."

A hand shot into the air.

Yagami wore his usual carefree grin.

"I'll go with him."

"It's fine," Saino replied without looking back.

Yagami ignored him completely.

"What if he collapses in the hallway because of that headache? Someone has to look after him."

Several students chuckled.

"Please, Sensei. Let me go."

The teacher hesitated.

Before he could even respond—

Yagami had already walked out of the classroom.

The teacher stared at the open doorway for a moment before letting out a helpless sigh.

"...That boy."

It was simply another one of Yagami's habits.

There was little point in stopping him now.

Outside, Yagami quickly caught up to Saino.

He clasped both hands behind his head as they continued walking through the quiet hallway.

Saino didn't say anything.

He already knew.

Yagami always did whatever he wanted.

"You think too much, Saino," Yagami said with a laugh.

"One day your brain's going to explode."

"...Maybe."

Saino answered calmly.

"Maybe it already has."

Yagami blinked before smiling in relief.

"Good."

"That means you're fine."

I was actually worried about you.

For a while, neither of them spoke.

Then, unexpectedly—

Saino broke the silence.

"...You're different, Yagami."

Yagami looked at him in confusion.

"Hm?"

"I'm different?"

"But... how?"

Saino kept his eyes fixed ahead.

"...Nothing."

Inside his mind, however...

You're far smarter than you pretend to be.

Before Yagami could ask another question, the restroom came into view.

"I'll go alone."

"Alright."

Yagami stopped walking.

Saino gave a small nod before stepping inside.

The restroom door quietly closed behind him.

Yagami remained standing alone in the hallway.

The cheerful smile slowly disappeared from his face.

He let out a quiet sigh.

"Man..."

"I wanted to talk with him a little longer."

"Now I'll have to wait until lunch."

For a brief moment...

A trace of loneliness crossed his face.

Then, just as quickly as it had vanished—

His familiar carefree smile returned.

As though nothing had happened.

With his usual relaxed walk, Yagami turned around and headed back toward the classroom.

Inside the restroom...

Saino remained standing beside the closed door.

His eyes were distant.

His thoughts deeper than ever.

For ordinary people, the future is uncertain.

Unknown.

Unpredictable.

It is shaped by the choices they make in the present.

He slowly lowered his head.

But for me...

Even while using less than half of my potential...

There is almost nothing about my future that I cannot predict.

A faint silence filled the room.

That isn't the life I came here to live.

I want a future I cannot foresee.

A present that can still surprise me.

Perhaps...

A normal life begins with taking the first step toward the unknown.

Chapter 1 — A Mind Beyond the Classroom (Part 2)

The sharp ring of the lunch bell echoed throughout the academy.

Within moments, the once-orderly hallways burst into life.

Students streamed out of their classrooms in endless waves, their conversations blending into a lively chorus. Some excitedly discussed club activities, others argued over examination results, while many hurried toward the cafeteria before the most popular meals disappeared.

Yagami stretched his arms behind his head as he stepped into the bustling corridor.

A faint smile appeared on his face.

"I wonder..."

"Did Saino actually stay... or did he disappear somewhere again?"

Knowing him...

Either was entirely possible.

---

The academy cafeteria was as lively as ever.

Hundreds of conversations overlapped into a constant wave of noise.

The clatter of trays echoed from every direction.

The aroma of freshly prepared meals filled the air.

Laughter and cheerful voices spread across every corner of the enormous hall.

Yet amid all the commotion...

One table remained almost completely isolated.

A lone boy sat there quietly, eating his lunch without the slightest interest in the world around him.

Saino.

As always, he had chosen the quietest corner of the cafeteria.

It was almost as though silence itself was his closest companion.

"There you are!"

A familiar voice shattered the peaceful atmosphere.

Yagami dropped into the chair opposite Saino with a relieved sigh.

"I've been looking everywhere for you."

Saino slowly raised his eyes.

"...You found me."

Yagami grinned.

"I always do."

He glanced around before laughing softly.

"You seriously have a talent for finding places nobody else wants to sit."

"They're quieter."

"Exactly."

Yagami looked at both lunch trays before a mischievous smile spread across his face.

"Wanna trade?"

Saino looked down at the food.

"Our meals are identical."

"So?"

"Trading identical food changes nothing."

"..."

"..."

Yagami let out an exaggerated sigh.

"You're impossible."

"It saves time."

Yagami burst into laughter, loud enough to attract the attention of several nearby students.

Across the cafeteria...

A group of first-year students couldn't help glancing toward the unusual pair.

One of them leaned forward and lowered his voice.

"Hey..."

"Who's that long-haired guy?"

Another student looked over in surprise.

"You don't know him?"

"That's Saino Yamahasi."

"The Saino?"

The first-year's eyes widened.

"I heard he ranked first in ten of the country's most prestigious scholarship examinations..."

"...and scored perfect marks in every single one."

"Seriously?"

Another student nodded.

"Almost every elite institute in the country wanted him."

"He could've studied anywhere."

"But instead..."

"He chose Vectoractescale Academy."

The first-year frowned.

"Why?"

The student simply shrugged.

"No one knows."

"He never talks about himself."

The first-year shifted his gaze toward the cheerful white-haired boy sitting across from Saino.

"And what about him?"

"That's Kamen Yagami."

"He's almost as famous."

"The most popular boy in the academy."

The first-year blinked.

"They're really friends?"

"They're complete opposites."

Another student nodded in agreement.

"I've never seen Saino laugh."

"Not even once."

The first-year looked back and forth between them.

"...Maybe..."

"...Yagami is just using him."

The words had barely left his mouth—

"You're wrong."

A calm voice interrupted.

The three first-years immediately turned around.

Standing behind them was a tall boy calmly adjusting his glasses.

His sharp eyes carried a quiet confidence that demanded respect.

Harusa.

The academy's third-ranked student.

One of its greatest prodigies.

The first-years immediately straightened their backs.

"I-It's Harusa..."

"I heard he's from one of the richest families in the country..."

Harusa looked at them expressionlessly.

"Yagami isn't that kind of person."

"They've been together since childhood."

"I've watched them for years."

"If there's one thing I'm absolutely certain about..."

"...it's that Yagami would never betray Saino."

His voice wasn't loud.

Yet every word carried absolute certainty.

The first-years exchanged uneasy glances.

Before anyone could respond—

A cheerful feminine voice joined the conversation.

"Looks like I arrived at the interesting part."

A beautiful girl carrying her lunch tray stopped beside Harusa.

Long chestnut hair swayed gently behind her.

Confident eyes.

A relaxed smile.

She carried herself with effortless grace.

Sarisi.

The academy's fourth-ranked student.

Known throughout the school as one of its brightest minds and finest athletes.

The first-years immediately recognized her.

"S-Sarisi..."

She smiled warmly.

"So..."

"Were you talking about Saino again?"

The first-year scratched his head awkwardly.

"We were just wondering..."

"...why everyone respects him so much."

Sarisi's gaze drifted toward the quiet corner of the cafeteria.

Saino continued eating as though nothing around him existed.

A faint smile appeared on her face.

"You know..."

"Something very similar happened during our first year."

The first-years immediately leaned closer.

"What happened?"

Sarisi remained silent for a brief moment before answering.

"There was a boy."

"He couldn't stand how many girls admired Saino."

The first-years stared at her in disbelief.

"Girls?"

Sarisi nodded.

"Saino barely spoke to anyone."

"He never tried to become popular."

"But for some reason..."

"Many girls admired him."

"They confessed to him."

"They left gifts on his desk."

"They constantly searched for opportunities to speak with him."

Her smile gradually faded.

"And all that attention..."

"...made one boy incredibly jealous."

"What did he do?"

Sarisi's expression turned serious.

"He started spreading ugly rumors."

"The kind of rumors meant to destroy someone's reputation."

Silence settled over the table.

One of the first-years swallowed nervously.

"Then..."

"...what happened?"

Chapter 1 — A Mind Beyond the Classroom (Part 3)

Silence settled over the table.

One of the first-year students swallowed nervously.

"Then..."

"...what happened?"

Sarisi didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she turned her gaze toward Harusa.

Harusa quietly adjusted his glasses before speaking.

"...He apologized."

The first-years exchanged puzzled looks.

"That's all?"

Harusa remained silent.

After a brief pause, Sarisi spoke once more.

"Not exactly."

For the first time since joining the conversation...

The gentle smile on her face disappeared.

"I still remember that day."

One Year Earlier

The academy corridor was unnaturally quiet.

A boy knelt helplessly on the polished floor.

His entire body trembled uncontrollably.

Blood stained the corner of his mouth.

Several of his teeth had already been knocked out.

Tears streamed endlessly down his face.

"I-I'm sorry..."

"I'm sorry, Saino..."

"I made everything up..."

"Please..."

"Please forgive me..."

Standing before him...

Saino remained completely motionless.

His expression never changed.

Calm.

Silent.

Emotionless.

He simply looked down at the trembling boy.

Not with hatred.

Not with anger.

Not even with pity.

It was the same indifferent gaze one might give a complete stranger.

Behind Saino...

Another figure stood quietly.

Yagami.

The cheerful smile that usually lit up his face...

Was nowhere to be seen.

Instead...

A faint smile rested upon his lips.

A smile that felt strangely unsettling.

Cold.

Empty.

Almost frightening.

The kneeling boy never dared to raise his head.

He continued apologizing over and over again, his voice breaking between desperate sobs.

"I swear I'll never do it again..."

"Please forgive me..."

"I was wrong..."

The Present

"...After that day..."

Sarisi continued quietly,

"...no one ever saw that boy at this academy again."

An uneasy silence spread across the table.

Even the lively sounds of the cafeteria seemed distant.

The first-year who had spoken earlier felt his face turn pale.

"D-Did Yagami..."

Before he could finish his sentence—

Harusa interrupted him.

"We don't know."

"No one knows what truly happened."

"And honestly..."

"It isn't our place to make assumptions."

The students instinctively turned their eyes toward the distant table.

Yagami was laughing over something completely childish.

His bright, carefree smile looked so innocent...

That it was almost impossible to connect him with the terrifying image from the flashback.

One of the students whispered uncertainly,

"...Maybe they're just rumors."

Sarisi smiled gently.

"Maybe."

"Or maybe not."

She paused for a moment before looking directly into their eyes.

"But here's one piece of advice."

"If you don't truly know someone..."

"Don't create a story about them."

Harusa gave a small nod.

"The bond between Saino and Yagami..."

"...isn't ordinary friendship."

"It's built upon years of trust."

"And that's something outsiders will never understand."

Across the cafeteria...

Completely unaware of the conversation taking place—

Yagami suddenly grinned.

"Race you."

Saino didn't even look up from his lunch.

"You'll lose."

"Oh?"

Yagami laughed.

"Now that's a challenge."

The two quietly continued eating.

One laughed without restraint.

The other remained as calm as the endless sky.

Two completely different people.

Yet somehow...

Closer than anyone else could ever understand.

Neither of them noticed the countless eyes watching from every corner of the cafeteria.

Some admired them.

Some feared them.

Others simply couldn't understand them.

And none of them...

Could possibly imagine...

That before long—

The ordinary days they had always taken for granted...

Would quietly come to an end.

Chapter 1 — A Mind Beyond the Classroom (Part 4)

As the conversation came to an end, Harusa picked up his lunch tray.

"I should get going."

Sarisi smiled and fell into step beside him.

For a while, neither of them spoke.

The crowded hallway buzzed with students returning to their classrooms, yet the two walked in comfortable silence.

After a few moments, Sarisi glanced sideways at him.

"You've really changed, Harusa."

Harusa looked at her.

"...Changed?"

She let out a soft chuckle.

"The Harusa from our first year would've ignored a conversation like that."

"But today..."

"You couldn't even stand hearing someone speak badly about Saino and Yagami."

Harusa remained silent.

His footsteps slowed almost imperceptibly.

Fragments of old memories surfaced within his mind.

Their first meeting.

His defeat.

The frustration that followed.

And eventually...

The respect that quietly replaced it.

After a long silence, he finally spoke.

"...Maybe."

Sarisi smiled knowingly.

"I think you simply can't tolerate people insulting those you respect."

Harusa adjusted his glasses before looking straight ahead once more.

"...Perhaps."

He paused for a brief moment.

"After all..."

"They're my classmates."

"And if someone spreads lies about my classmates..."

"...I believe it's my responsibility to stop them."

Sarisi's smile widened.

"I thought you'd say that."

The two continued walking through the crowded hallway, disappearing into the sea of students.

Neither of them noticed...

From the cafeteria window—

Saino quietly gazed at the endless blue sky once again.

The clouds drifted lazily across the horizon, carried wherever the wind desired.

His expression remained as calm as ever.

Unchanging.

Unreadable.

Completely unaware...

That even the people around him had begun to change because of his existence.

Some admired him.

Some feared him.

Some wished to become like him.

Others wished to surpass him.

Yet none of those thoughts reached him.

His mind had already wandered far beyond the walls of the academy.

Far beyond examinations.

Far beyond rankings.

Far beyond the ordinary lives surrounding him.

Somewhere...

Beyond questions no one else dared to ask.

Beyond answers no one had yet discovered.

And although neither Saino nor anyone else realized it—

The peaceful days they considered ordinary...

Were quietly approaching their end.

Because before long...

A single decision...

Would begin a chain of events capable of changing not only the academy—

But the entire world.

The sky remained endlessly blue.

As though it alone already knew...

What awaited beyond tomorrow.
