Chapter 67 - Chapter 67: The Trail of Illegal Fishing Vessels

In the real world, the effects of a pokémon's Ability and moves are not as immutable as they are in games; instead, they continuously improve as their development deepens.

Take Gyarados's Rain Dance move, for example: when roughly mastered, it can only summon a light drizzle, adding perhaps 10-20% to the power of Water-type moves.

But if it reaches the 'proficient' level, the rain will become a moderate downpour, potentially increasing the power of Water-type moves by 30-40%.

By extension, the higher the move's proficiency, the stronger its power and effect.

The same goes for Abilities!

When a pokémon is still weak, some Abilities are difficult to activate, while others are hard to shut off, making them all very challenging to control.

For instance, when Adrian first caught Pichu, its Lightning Rod could attract lightning, but it was difficult to control its deactivation, often leading to indigestion and self-harm after attracting lightning.

However, with the consumption of ability candy, Pichu's Lightning Rod's development gradually deepened; not only did its lightning-attracting range expand, but it could later digest Lanturn's Thunderbolt and Ampharos's Thunder, showing significant improvement in effect.

But even then, Pichu's Lightning Rod still couldn't be freely switched on and off.

And now, Pichu has broken through its shackles and seems capable of freely toggling its Ability on and off.

If this were in a double battle or group battle, it would be an incredibly explosive effect.

It's equivalent to the opponent's Electric-type moves being locked down, while Adrian's Electric-type moves can be used freely.

This way, Adrian's advantage would be significant.

"Let's try it!"

Adrian rubbed his hands, deciding to give it a test.

He glanced at the Gyarados not far away, then looked at the Thunder Wave tm in the fishing space, and couldn't help but think, "A Pichu that knows Thunder Wave is unremarkable, but a Gyarados that knows Thunder Wave is definitely one in a million."

This principle is the same as a Pichu knowing Surf.

As far as Adrian knew, moves like Thunder Wave and Flamethrower were all in Gyarados's move pool.

But under normal circumstances, Gyarados would find it very difficult to learn the above moves.

However, once truly mastered, their effectiveness would be explosive, often catching opponents off guard.

Thinking of this, Adrian summoned Gyarados and then activated the Thunder Wave tm.

"Aoh roo~"

Gyarados let out a strange cry, feeling its head itch again.

"Pichu, you turn off Lightning Rod."

After Gyarados finished digesting, Adrian quickly shouted, "Gyarados, use Thunder Wave!"

"Aoh roo~"

Seeing Pichu nod, Gyarados struggled to gather energy for a moment, and from the junction of the three horns on its forehead, a subtle, special electric wave was indeed shot out.

However, compared to Pichu, Gyarados's Thunder Wave move was slower to execute, and the electric wave was also thinner, showing a clear difference in effect.

But this was unavoidable, as Gyarados is not an Electric-type pokémon after all.

Zzzzt!

The Thunder Wave shot directly at a small tree not far away and hit it in the blink of an eye, with no signs of being attracted away during the process.

"It worked!"

Adrian was beaming.

Facts proved that everything Pichu said was true.

Adrian stroked Pichu's head and turned his gaze to the moves harvested in the fishing space.

[Electro Ball: An Electric-type move. The user hurls an electric orb at the target. The faster the user is compared to the target, the greater the move's power.]

[Electroweb: An Electric-type move. The user attacks the target with an electric net. This also lowers the target's speed.]

[Volt Switch: An Electric-type move. After making its attack, the user immediately switches out to a waiting pokémon.]

[Confuse Ray: An Electric-type move. The user emits strange electric waves from its body, bathing the target in them, thereby greatly lowering its special attack.]

"Pichu, comprehend these thoroughly!"

Adrian activated these tms.

Before long, Pichu's move list expanded significantly.

And with these moves, Pichu's strength also directly surged by a large margin.

Looking at Pichu's move list, Adrian first nodded in satisfaction, but quickly shook his head again and said seriously, "Pichu certainly has a lot of moves, but their proficiency is basically just roughly mastered, so they can't exert much effect at all. It seems I still need to fish more!"

Immediately after, Adrian glanced at Gyarados's move list again and sighed, "Under rainy conditions, Hurricane and Thunder moves are guaranteed to hit. Since that's the case, Gyarados's 'Thunder' move should also be arranged as soon as possible."

Clenching his fists, Adrian felt full of drive and excitedly declared, "It's decided! I'll go night fishing and pull an all-nighter tonight!"

No choice!

To improve his pokémon's strength, he had to fish even harder.

Adrian continued fishing, and Chinchou kept biting, with rewards constantly being opened... Time flew by, and in a blink of an eye, it was the dead of night.

By the sea under the cover of night, Adrian sat cross-legged on the shore, fishing, his body tired, yawning continuously.

Pichu, however, was perched on Adrian's head, looking energetic, even using its Shinny move as a spotlight to illuminate the float.

Because every so often, Adrian would teach Pichu tms and activate energy cubes to nourish it, so its enthusiasm was particularly high.

But Adrian was not made of iron; after fishing for more than ten hours straight, mostly with continuous bites, he was already exhausted.

However, Chinchou only had two days from migrating to swimming ashore and then to the green lake on the mountaintop to spawn, so Adrian had to seize every second.

Whoosh!

The float suddenly sank, and Adrian quickly reeled in.

With a "splash," a Chinchou was pulled out of the water.

[Caught 'Chinchou', rewarded with 1 'Charge Beam' tm.]

The cheat ability arrived as promised, but Adrian was already completely numb.

He no longer remembered how many Chinchou he had caught, but it was at least over a hundred.

"Huh? This Chinchou is injured?"

Suddenly, Adrian noticed scratches on the Chinchou's body, with faint traces of blood oozing out.

"Injured? Was it bullied by other pokémon in the sea?"

Adrian's heart stirred, and he quickly took out a Potion spray from his backpack, wanting to treat the Chinchou's injuries.

"Yo ji~"

But upon seeing Adrian, the Chinchou frantically spat out the hook, jumped back into the sea, and disappeared.

Adrian didn't mind this.

However, as Chinchou continued to bite, injured Chinchou appeared one after another, all with net-like abrasions, and Adrian suddenly realized something was wrong.

Especially one Chinchou, which had lost one of its tentacles, a truly shocking sight.

Connecting this to what President Nixie had mentioned in the morning, Adrian's eyebrows twitched: "Could it be an illegal fishing vessel?!"

Thinking of this, Adrian quickly called Nixie.

But to Adrian's disappointment, perhaps because he was on an island, the phone signal here was very unstable, and President Nixie's call went unanswered.

So Adrian dialed the police emergency number.

Although the signal was still poor, this time it connected.

However, the police officer on the other end, after hearing Adrian's intention, stated that everything was Adrian's speculation, and there was insufficient evidence, so they could not dispatch officers.

Unless Adrian personally saw the illegal fishing vessel.

"I want to speak with Officer Jenny!"

Adrian still held a glimmer of hope.

Officer Jenny and Joy are role models in the Pokémon world; if he could contact her, Adrian believed she would definitely dispatch officers for justice.

"Officer Jenny is very busy. Please don't spread rumors about things without evidence. Also, if there's nothing else, then I'll hang up!"

With that, the other party hung up the phone.

"Damn it!"

Listening to the busy signal on the phone, Adrian was furious.

How could an illegal fishing vessel openly sail to the shore for him to see?

Or was he supposed to go search for an illegal fishing vessel himself in the vast ocean?

"Pi~"

But just then, Pichu's ears on Adrian's head twitched.

It seemed to have sensed something?
