Chapter 25 Part 1 Attack at ER and Waiting Room Grief
I sat on the hospital steps, lit a cigarette, and watched coldly as three police officers shoved a balding middle‑aged man into a squad car. His forehead and the corner of one eye were bruised; his hands were cuffed behind his back. Slumped and wretched, he kept mumbling to the officers, "I was too impulsive… Officer, I lost control… wuwuwu… What have I done…"
"What's the point of regret now? The doctor you stabbed is still fighting for his life upstairs. Save your talk for the station."
The squad car with the attacker left first, but other officers stayed, questioning witnesses and taking statements at the entrance.
On the fringes of the hospital entrance, a crowd of onlookers clustered and gossiped.
I'd already finished my statement. The security guards and I had subdued the attacker before the police arrived.
Some guards had gone back to their posts; some were bragging to the nurses about their bravery. An older security guard sat on the steps beside me; we shared a silence.
"I hate it! My wife was fine before. After she started using that Xunxing app, she changed! Out all day and all night! It was him men like him, seducing her on the phone! Tempting her with money! She stopped caring about home, stopped coming back at night! That bastard seduced my wife he's a wretch! I wanted to kill him! Kill him!!"
The man's earlier rant still echoed in my ears. When he'd pointed the fruit knife at us, his hand had shaken, but as he spoke, tears had welled up. Then he had shrieked, swinging the knife as he fell into hysterics.
Behind him, Yun Huijie had taken two stabs to the back and lay in a pool of blood, his fate unknown.
Men like that look fierce but are easy to subdue. One guard bear‑hugged him from behind and slammed him down, the others pinned him, and I stomped on his hand to make him drop the knife, then kicked his face for good measure.
"Do you think that app is really that tempting? It's driving people mad," muttered the guard next to me.
I didn't respond at first. Then I said, "I don't know. I haven't used it."
"My daughter's hooked too. School can't control them. The official escort rates are too low, so she skips class to pick up men, checks her phone at home looking for nearby bookings, even brings men back home sometimes. I've scolded her, but she won't listen. Now the universities can't take it; they've blocked it about time, if you ask me."
"Maybe the younger generation just likes it," I said calmly.
"Sigh… This thing's hollowed everyone out. If it were just doing favors for a little extra money, fine but now they charge hundreds every time…"
I tuned him out, because I saw a red sports car pull up, the plate number matching what I'd gotten from Lanrui.
Finding Lin Jiabi hadn't been easy; her phone was off. I'd only gotten a backup number from Lanrui.
The sports car stopped at the entrance; I hurried over.
The door opened. Lin Jiabi unfastened her seatbelt, clearly anxious, but still remembered to talk to the driver.
"Zhuo Xun, thank you. I'll make up the time for you "
"Enough, Jiabi, go check on your boyfriend!"
"Yes, thanks!"
I glanced at the driver: a young man in sunglasses, completely unfamiliar.
Lin Jiabi stumbled out, even more disheveled than I'd expected especially for her. Her hair was a mess; her makeup had streaked into colorful smears with sweat. Her eyes were wild.
She wore only a sheer black shirt, buttoned at the bottom; her rising and falling breasts and hard nipples were visible through the thin fabric. Nothing below; the shirt hem barely covered anything. Her damp pubic hair clung to sticky thighs; she wore slippers on her feet.
Knowing her temperament, I wouldn't have been surprised to see her run into the hospital completely nude. I could easily guess what she'd been doing with Zhuo Xun likely her latest escort client.
"Yayi… You're here, thank God! How's Jie? You said he was attacked? What happened?"
She was panicked, but seeing me calmed her a little; then the questions tumbled out.
"Miss, listen Huijie was stabbed twice in the back. He's in surgery right now, and it's serious… Ah, Miss."
I caught her as she nearly collapsed, patting her face until she came around; then tears poured down.
"How could this happen! In broad daylight! Please, let him be okay!"
"He'll be fine. It's his own hospital the best place for him. Come, let's go up. Yiyi's waiting outside the OR."
Jiabi nodded, took the tissues I handed her, then suddenly asked, "Did you notify his family?"
"The hospital already called them; they're probably on their way. Does he have any close family?"
"He's an only child… his father's a famous doctor. His mother is… my guzheng teacher…"
"They'll be here soon. Come on, the elevators are this way."
Third floor, surgical wing. I waited outside the OR with a wry smile.
Damn. How did we end up here?
Jiabi sobbed on the bench, Yiyi and a female police officer comforting her.
Two male officers waited in a corner for updates.
Yun Huijie had deep roots in this hospital; many worried doctors and nurses clustered nearby. Some came over to squeeze Jiabi's hand.
Yiyi and I exchanged a look and shook our heads. We'd only come to visit her father's illness, never expecting this.
I'd followed news and even negative pieces about Xunxing, but I'd never imagined it would bring real violence, hit so close to home, or that I'd be in the middle of it. Was Gen Root really arranging fate?
On top of that, the media would get wind of this soon; we'd have a PR nightmare.
I texted Wang Linsheng to see if he could help slow the press.
