Chapter 7 - CHAPTER SEVEN : THE QUIET BEFORE THUNDER

Ren's fingertips trembled.

Silver thread sparks flickered, then faded.

His hand shook — not from exhaustion.

From change.

He stared at his palm, breathing slow but uneven.

That wasn't me…

Was it?

A pulse from the Rings rumbled through the arena walls.

The entire room vibrated.

Rina paced the recovery room.

Hard.

Petals scattered behind her like a trail of nervous, dangerous butterflies.

Kai sat on the bed, arm wrapped, ribs bandaged. One chain flickered slightly out of sync.

Ren perched on a wooden crate, elbows resting on his knees.

Silent.

The atmosphere felt heavy as stone.

Rina's voice shook.

"Ren…

You didn't just win.

You— you cut him.

Like you've been waiting to."

Her voice cracked.

Not accusing.

Afraid.

Ren didn't look up.

Kai winced slightly but spoke calmly.

"Rina… he did what he had to do."

Rina spun toward him.

"No."

Her petals sharpened in the air.

"He moved differently.

Even the air froze."

She looked back at Ren.

"Ren… that wasn't normal."

Ren finally lifted his head.

His voice was quiet.

"I know."

Silence settled over the room.

Rina's petals grew sharper, angrier.

Kai watched Ren carefully.

Not with fear.

With curiosity.

Like he recognized something Ren hadn't admitted yet.

The entire building shook.

Walls cracked.

Outside, the sky flashed white — then gold — then deep red.

A massive, ancient gong echoed across the city.

Kai looked up.

"Another Ring shift already?"

Rina's eyes narrowed.

"No…

Something else."

Her petals flattened against her skin, almost like they were bracing.

Ren stood instantly.

When the trio reached the arena floor, chaos waited for them.

A group of heavily armored fighters had breached the arena.

Storm Heretics.

Foreign warriors carrying storm-forged weapons.

They were not part of the tournament.

They were not supposed to be here.

Their leader slammed a massive hammer into the ground.

Cracks spidered across the stone floor.

His roar shook the arena.

"RING-BEARERS OF THE EAST!

COME OUT!

WE SEEK BLOOD AND ASCENSION!"

The crowd screamed.

Security guards rushed in confusion.

Mentors appeared along the upper balconies, preparing to intervene.

But the Heretics were already charging.

Straight for the civilians.

Rina stepped forward.

Her footsteps echoed across the stone.

Her petals ignited instantly — bright, blazing, violent.

Her eyes shifted into the unstable glow of her awakened state.

She smiled.

Dangerous.

"Storm Heretics…"

Her staff rose slowly.

"Your timing is awful.

But your timing is perfect."

Petals swirled around her like a hurricane halo.

Kai stepped forward quickly.

"Rina— wait!"

Too late.

A Heretic swung a massive axe.

Rina vanished.

She reappeared behind him.

A soft chime rang from her bell-staff.

Petals exploded outward.

His armor shredded apart like confetti.

He collapsed.

Rina tilted her head, still smiling.

Kai moved next.

Chains burst outward from his arms.

They split in three directions, ripping weapons away and dragging enemies off balance.

His voice hardened.

"No one harms this crowd.

Not while we're here."

Two Heretics rushed him.

His chains wrapped them both instantly.

With a sharp twist he threw them across the arena floor.

Ren walked through the chaos.

Everyone else ran and screamed.

He did neither.

He moved calmly, watching angles, timing, breathing patterns, stances.

Counting heartbeats.

A Heretic charged from behind.

Ren flicked one finger.

A thin micro-thread snapped outward.

A sharp cut.

The man's knee gave out instantly.

He collapsed.

Another lunged with a spear.

Ren rotated his staff once.

The strike deflected effortlessly.

The attacker's own momentum threw him to the ground.

Nearby, a commentator hid behind a broken bench.

His voice trembled.

"He's…

He's not moving human anymore…"

The remaining Heretics regrouped.

They formed a tight formation.

Storm energy gathered around them.

Their leader raised his hammer again.

"ANCHOR INTO THE SKY!

UNLEASH THE RED THUNDER!"

Lightning surged upward.

A massive sphere of storm energy formed above the arena.

Civilians screamed.

Even the mentors braced.

Rina rose into the air.

Her petals formed a swirling shield.

Kai expanded his chains outward, forming a protective dome around the nearest civilians.

Ren stepped forward.

His breathing slowed.

Threads spread behind him like silver wings.

He spoke calmly.

"Rina.

Kai.

Together."

For a single moment—

All three resonated.

Petals flared.

Chains ignited.

Threads hummed.

Their power converged.

A massive tri-colored surge erupted into the sky.

Silver.

Rose.

Gray.

The lightning sphere shattered.

The explosion detonated mid-air.

The shockwave blasted the Heretics backward.

Their leader smashed through two stone pillars and fell motionless.

Silence followed.

Civilians erupted into cheers.

Mentors rushed down to secure the arena.

Rina slowly descended.

Her petals dimmed as exhaustion caught up to her.

Kai stepped forward to support her.

Ren wiped blood from his eyebrow.

Not from injury.

From exertion.

Then a strange pulse rippled across the arena.

High above them—

The Fifth Ring glowed faintly.

For the first time.

A deep, ominous hum filled the air.

Kai stared upward uneasily.

"…That wasn't supposed to happen yet."

Rina exhaled slowly.

"Storms don't wait for the schedule."

Ren narrowed his eyes at the sky.

"No.

Someone pushed it."

He looked toward the shadowed balcony above the arena.

A faint silhouette stood there.

Watching.

Lucen.

Only Ren saw him.

Their eyes met.

Lucen smiled.

Dark clouds swirled around the Fifth Ring.

Lightning cracked silently across the sky.

Below, the trio stood together.

Bruised.

Breathing heavily.

Surrounded by fallen warriors.

And slowly realizing something terrifying.

The storm wasn't coming.

It was already here.
