Chapter 21 - The Showcase

The gala happened, scaled-back but vibrant, funded by a patchwork of small community donations and sheer grit. Chloe's showcase—a deconstructed "Neighborhood Affogato" with espresso-soaked cake and handmade gelato—was a masterpiece of story and flavor, telling the tale of her café. It won the top commendation.

At the after-party, amidst the chatter, Marcus found her on a quiet balcony. "Congratulations. It was… perfect."

"We did it," she said, the 'we' hanging in the air, significant. "You made two hundred calls."

"And brewed twelve gallons of terrible coffee."

They shared a quiet laugh. The tension had shifted, softened into a fragile, hard-earned camaraderie.

"What now?" he asked, the question laden with hope and fear.

"Now," she said, turning to him, "I go back to my café. And you… you have to decide who Marcus Thorne is. Not the billionaire, not the intern. The man. And you have to build that man a life. A real one. Not for me. For you."
