Chapter 12 - CHAPTER 11 — THE SHADOW THAT DISCOVERED ITS NAME

Night enveloped Astren in quietude.

Yet this quiet was anything but peaceful.

Not since two fates intertwined.

The village lay dormant.

Stars observed.

And something else observed as well.

**Ren's Breaking Point**

Ren found himself alone at the old training ground—the post he had shattered days prior now replaced.

He gazed at it.

Not with the eyes of a youth.

But with the eyes of someone aware of the world's pressure against him.

Mocking him.

Gradually, he clenched his hands into fists.

Stellan revived a flower.

Stellan didn't even try.

Stellan didn't sacrifice for it.

Ren struck the post.

The wood splintered.

He struck once more.

And again.

Until his vision blurred and his fists were numb.

Yet his anger didn't wane.

It honed.

A voice broke through the silence.

"You feel it, don't you?"

Soft. Icy. Almost inquisitive.

Ren turned abruptly.

A silhouette leaned against a tree—tall, cloaked, indifferent to Ren's glare.

"I sensed your awakening earlier," he said. "A force breaking free."

Ren scowled. "Who are you?"

The figure stepped closer.

Not fully into the light.

Never completely hidden in shadow.

"I am called Corvax."

The name thrummed in the air like a plucked string.

Ren didn't recognize the name.

Yet something deep within him resonated with it.

Corvax tilted his head.

"You… seek power."

Ren gritted his teeth. "I will claim it."

"Excellent," Corvax murmured.

"For strength is already reaching for you."

Shadows coiled around Ren's feet—thin tendrils, gentle as mist.

Not threatening.

Inviting.

Ren took a quick step back.

"What are you doing?"

"Nothing," Corvax replied smoothly. "I merely speak. The rest is your desire responding."

Ren's jaw clenched.

He stayed put.

He didn't flee.

He listened.

Because a part of him was eager to understand—

What am I becoming?

Corvax nodded, appearing pleased.

"Your path diverges now. You will either rise above all…"

His voice deepened.

"…or be consumed the instant you falter."

Then he retreated into the shadows—

And vanished.

Ren was by himself once more.

But his shadow…

It no longer felt merely like a shadow.

It felt aware.

**Stellan and the Forbidden Healing**

Morning light streamed over the village.

Stellan was again beside his mother in the garden—but today, he attempted something forbidden.

The lily he had revived days earlier still stood strong.

But beside it, another flower drooped.

He gently touched the dead stem with two fingers.

Closed his eyes.

Reached within—

Nothing.

Once more.

Nothing.

No warmth surged.

No return of life.

Just the stillness of an ordinary boy.

His mother regarded him kindly.

"You don't have to force it, Stellan."

"But I did it before," he murmured. "Without even trying."

"Miracles aren't tools," she replied kindly. "They come when necessary… not when called."

Stellan frowned.

He knew that wasn't the whole truth.

He sensed something within him.

Something waiting.

Something listening.

His mother caressed his cheek.

"You are still my son," she said. "Not a prophecy."

But the troubling reality was—

The world held a different view.

**The Seeker's Arrival**

On the outskirts of Astren, The Seeker surveyed the morning light stretching across the terrain from atop a ridge.

He closed his eyes.

Two energies pulsed like beacons.

One steady, warm, hesitant.

Stellan.

One sharp, jagged, rising.

Ren.

The Seeker opened his eyes.

"It commences tonight."

He touched the runes engraved on his wrist.

Golden light flared.

"Two children," he murmured.

"Two destinies."

"But only one will carry the mark I desire."

He turned toward the village.

His cloak billowed in the wind.

He didn't walk.

He simply vanished.

Nightfall — The Initial Challenge

Stellan sensed a shift in the atmosphere before he saw it.

A presence encroaching upon their peaceful life.

He stepped outside and paused at the road's edge.

A stranger stood there.

Hood down.

Eyes piercing.

Aura controlled yet expansive.

The Seeker.

"Stellan," he said with calm authority. "We must talk."

Stellan recoiled.

"How do you know my name?"

The Seeker's eyes glimmered softly.

"I have sought you since the moment you breathed life into a dying flower."

Stellan froze.

His heart raced.

The Seeker approached.

"Don't be afraid," he said. "I am not your enemy."

He paused just an arm's length away.

"But the world will be."

Before Stellan could reply, a chilling wind swept over the fields.

A howl.

A surge of shadow.

A presence much darker than the Seeker's.

Stellan shivered.

"What is that…?"

The Seeker's expression hardened.

"Your first hunter."

**Ren Senses It Too**

Ren stood outside his home, training once more.

Then—

A tremor.

Like a heartbeat in the sky.

His breath caught.

"What… is that sensation?"

Something ancient.

Something ravenous.

Something approaching the village.

His shadow quivered.

Corvax's voice echoed from nowhere—

"Your first predator is near, young sovereign."

Ren took a slow breath.

Then grinned.

"Excellent."

**The First Hunter Emerges**

The wind howled.

Branches cracked.

A creature emerged from the trees.

Tall.

Hollow-eyed.

Bones encased in stretched black skin.

A nightmare taking human form.

The Seeker positioned himself in front of Stellan.

"A Hollow Wraith," he explained. "Attracted to awakened divinity."

The wraith opened its mouth—

A low, guttural screech reverberating through the air.

Stellan's legs quaked.

"Why is it here?"

The Seeker drew a blade of pure golden energy.

"Because," he stated,

"You have started your ascent."

The creature lunged.

Stellan screamed.

The Seeker surged forward—

But he wasn't swift enough.

Not this time.

The wraith targeted Stellan.

Not the warrior.

Not the village.

Stellan.

It reached him in an instant—

And seized his arm.

Stellan gasped—

And something inside him erupted.

Light flashed.

Not warm.

Not gentle.

Not controlled.

A surge.

A flare.

A force that didn't belong in a mortal vessel.

The wraith recoiled, shrieking as its hand disintegrated in white fire.

Stellan stumbled back, horrified.

The Seeker stared at him wide-eyed.

"…Impossible," he breathed.

Ren, from across the fields, felt the explosion too.

His shadow quaked.

Corvax murmured:

"Stellan has taken his first step."

Ren's eyes narrowed.

"Then I will take mine."
