The valley does not sleep easily after Lina's rescue.
Even with her safe, even with the ambush contained, something lingers in the air like smoke that refuses to lift. Wolves move more quietly. Conversations taper when Aurora passes. The web hums, alive, intact, but strained.
Aurora stands at the ridge at sunrise, watching mist crawl through the trees.
Her suspension is technically still in effect.
But last night blurred lines.
She feels it in the way eyes follow her now, not uncertain, not doubtful
Expectant.
Kade approaches from behind, boots silent on damp earth.
"You shouldn't be up here alone," he says quietly.
She doesn't turn.
"I'm not alone."
The bond hums faintly.
He steps beside her.
"Council convenes at midday," he says. "Charges against the distributor move forward."
"And the missing thread?" she asks.
"They're tracing payments," he replies. "There are gaps."
Aurora exhales slowly.
"There are always gaps."
Thunder rumbles faintly in the distance.
