Midoriya Household:
Izuku sat by the door, as his fingers fumbling while he tried to tie his shoelaces.
Left over right. Loop. Pull. No, wait, that's a granny knot.... I'm stupid... T-T
"Izuku!"
Inko Midoriya stood behind him, vibrating with anxiety. She looked like she was sending him off to a war rather than UA.
"Did you take your tissues?" she asked in a trembling voice. "It's allergy season. And you cry when you're happy. And when you're sad. You need hydration."
"Yeah, Mom," Izuku said, finally managing to tie a knot that looked acceptable. "I have a whole pack."
"How about your handkerchief?" she pressed, leaning closer. "The lucky one? With the All Might print? You have it, right? Right?"
Izuku patted his pocket. He felt the soft fabric. "I have it, Mom. I checked three times."
He stood up, grabbing his yellow backpack.
He took a deep breath, trying to steady his heart rate, which was currently beating like a machine gun.
"I am going to be late!" he said, checking his phone.
He opened the door, ready to rush out.
"Izuku!"
He stopped and looked back.
Inko was standing there, tears welling up in her large eyes.
"Mom?"
"I am really proud of you, honey!" she said, a tear rolling down her cheek. She smiled. "You look so cool in that uniform."
Izuku felt a lump form in his throat, as he smiled back, his own eyes watering.
"I'm off!" he yelled, his voice cracking with emotion.
He turned and sprinted down the hallway, taking the stairs.
He ran to the metro station, dodging commuters and bicycles. Dodging another old man he swiped his pass, squeezed through the closing doors of the train, and grabbed a handrail just in time.
Safe, he thought, exhaling.
Like always, he whipped out his phone. A hero student had to be up to date on current events. The world moved fast, and news moved faster.
He opened the news app.
The top headline wasn't about All Might. It wasn't about politics.
BLADE: THE SILENT VANISHING.
Izuku frowned. He tapped the article.
I wonder why he stopped, Izuku thought, reading the text rapidly.
Blade, the terrifying vigilante known for his swordplay, had simply vanished about a month ago. No sightings. No burnt criminals left in alleyways. No rumors on the dark web.
The article had details about his last known activity. He had intercepted a villain group trying to kidnap children from a local kindergarten in the Mustafu suburbs. The police had arrived to find the villains unconscious, tied up on a light pole.
And on the leader, carved into his back with a blade, was a message.
"I AM ALWAYS WATCHING."
Izuku shivered. It was terrifying.
But the most interesting part was the crime statistics.
Since then, Izuku read, even after Blade stopped his patrols, the crime rate in his active districts has not increased. In fact, petty crimes are down another 5%.
Why? Because the villains didn't know if he was truly gone or not. They assumed he was just waiting, that the moment they stepped out of line, a sword would cut their arm off.
That's the power of fear, I guess, Izuku thought, analyzing it. It's effective. Brutally effective. Even though it feels wrong... it works.
Ding-dong.
"Next station: U.A. High School."
Izuku jumped, as he shoved his phone into his pocket.
"That's me!"
He got off the train, merging with the stream of students wearing the gray blazer with green trim. He walked through the massive gates of U.A., feeling the excitement building up.
Izuku entered the main building, which was a labyrinth.
"Class 1-A... Class 1-A..." he muttered, checking the map on the wall. "This place is too big. Why are the doors so huge? Is it for students with gigantification quirks?"
He turned a corner.
And there it was. A massive door with 1-A painted on it in red.
Izuku stood in front of it and gulped.
This is it. The Hero Course.
Let's do this.
But just as he reached for the handle, a scary thought stopped him.
The glasses guy from the exam. And Kacchan.
He squeezed his eyes shut, and prayed. Please, let them be in a different class.
He pushed the door open.
"DON'T PUT YOUR FEET ON THE DESK!"
Izuku froze.
Inside, Tenya Iida was standing over Katsuki Bakugo's desk, chopping his hand in the air like a robot.
Bakugo was leaning back in his chair, his feet resting casually on the polished wood.
"Hah?" Bakugo sneered.
"Don't you think that's rude to the U.A. upperclassmen and the people who made this desk?" Iida demanded, adjusting his glasses.
"Nope," Bakugo grinned. "What junior high did you go to, you side character?"
Izuku's soul left his body. They're both here.
Just then, Iida turned to the door. He spotted Izuku.
"You..." Iida said.
The rest of the class turned.
"I am from Somei Private Academy," Iida announced, marching toward him with stiff, military steps. "My name is Tenya Iida."
"I-I know!" Izuku stammered, backing up slightly. "I heard you! I'm Izuku Midoriya. Nice to meet you."
Iida stopped in front of him and looked at him with respect.
"Midoriya," Iida said solemnly. "You realized there was something more to the practical exam, didn't you? I had no idea... I judged you incorrectly. I hate to admit it, but you are the better student."
Izuku blinked. He laughed awkwardly, waving his hands. "I... uh... I didn't realize anything! I just ran in!"
I can't tell him I just panicked!
Just then, a bubbly voice came from behind him.
"Ohhh! You're the plain-looking guy!"
Izuku froze. He turned around slowly.
Standing there was the nice girl from the exam — Ochaco Uraraka. She looked great in the uniform.
"You passed!" she cheered, pumping a fist. "That punch was amazing! I tried to ask the teacher to give you some of my points, but he said you didn't need them!"
"W-Wha—" Izuku turned red.
"You really have a knack for standing in the way of others, don't you?"
A bored, lazy voice interrupted them from the hallway.
Ochaco, Midoriya, and Iida turned around.
Standing in the doorway was a boy. He was tall, lean, handsome, and had long red hair.
The surprising thing? He wasn't wearing the U.A. uniform.
He was wearing a loose, dark gray yukata.
In his hand, he held a red smoking pipe. And on his head, perched like a crown, was a small black cat wearing a tiny U.A. tie. (Isn't she the cutest😭)
Beside him stood a tall girl with a high ponytail.
Ochaco's eyes widened. "Ohh! The good-looking guy from the exam!"
Izuku realized he was blocking the door again. He bowed repeatedly, panic overriding his brain.
"Sorry! Sorry! I didn't mean to do that!"
He walked to the side, pressing himself against the doorframe.
"No problem," the boy said smoothly.
He walked into the classroom. His wooden sandals clicked loudly against the floor tiles.
Momo followed him, offering a polite smile to Izuku. "Excuse us."
As Akira passed Iida, the tall boy stiffened. He looked away, beads of sweat forming on his forehead.
Akira ignored him, but Nia didn't.
As they passed Iida, the cat turned her head. Her yellow eyes locked onto the glasses boy.
HSSSSS!
She let out a sharp hiss.
Iida flinched back, nearly tripping over a desk.
Akira patted her head. "Be nice, Nia."
Nia huffed and sat down comfortably.
They walked to the back of the class. Akira found an empty desk in the corner, near the window.
Classic, he thought.
He sat down, crossing his legs, looking utterly unbothered by the fact that everyone was staring at him.
Just as they settled, a yell came from the front of the room.
"Hey! Akira!"
A floating girl's uniform was waving at him from near the door.
"You made it too!" she cheered. "I saw the scoreboard! 1,150 points! You weren't joking when you said I was lucky to have another ground!"
The class went silent.
"1,150?" a boy with red spiky hair gasped. "That's him?"
"That's the guy?" a blonde boy with lightning-like hair whispered. "The one who broke All Might's record?"
"Why is he wearing a yukata?"
"Is that a cat?"
"Why is he smoking? Isn't he underage?"
Akira smiled as he nodded at the invisible girl.
"Good to see you too, Toru."
Momo, sitting at the desk in front of him, turned around. "You know her?"
"Yeah," Akira said, taking an unlit puff from his pipe. "We met at the exam. She has good taste in snacks."
"Go somewhere else if you want to make friends."
The chatter died.
The voice was tired and sounded like it hadn't slept in a decade.
Izuku looked down.
Lying on the floor, wrapped in a bright yellow sleeping bag like a caterpillar, was a man.
"This is the hero course," the man mumbled.
He stood up, shedding the sleeping bag. He was messy, with long black hair and a scarf made of capture tape.
"It took you eight seconds to quiet down," Aizawa said, looking at his watch. "Time is limited. You kids, are not rational enough."
He scanned the class with tired eyes. His gaze landed on the back corner. On the boy in the yukata.
The class held its breath. Surely, the teacher would say something that this was a dress code violation.
Aizawa sighed. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a gym uniform.
"And before you ask," Aizawa said, his voice flat, addressing the entire class while pointing a thumb at Akira. "Why that kid is smoking, has a cat, and is wearing a yukata..."
He paused, looking dead inside.
"That's because he is mentally unstable and needs all that to remain calm. It's a medical exemption. Do not engage with the animal unless you want to sign a liability waiver."
Silence.
Momo covered her mouth, her shoulders shaking as she tried not to laugh.
Nia, however, had no such restraint.
"BWAHAHAHAHA!"
The cat laughed loudly from Akira's shoulder.
"You hear that, Daddy?" Nia crowed. "You are mentally unstable! The hobo man said so!"
The class gasped.
"DID THAT CAT JUST TALK?!" Mina screamed.
Aizawa ignored the chaos. He held up the blue gym uniform.
"Whatever," he grunted. "Put these on and meet me on the grounds. We have a quirk apprehension test to take."
He turned and walked out, leaving Class 1-A to process the madness.
