Chapter 9 - 7.2 A suspect and an invitation

FENG LANG

I snapped back to reality, looking at the screen of my phone with wide eyes. The guys incolved in a conversation I wasn't paying attention to.

"Ruiqing" I breathed out, interrupting their chatter. "I think I'm starting to have some flashback."

"Really, what do you remember?" Yichen asked hopefully.

"Yeah… I'm not so sure, but I think the person had white hair and purple eyes." I answered, still uncertain. "There's also this lavender scent in the room." I frowned. "I'll need last night's footage. Ruiqing, expedite the process."

Ruiqing sighed. "I don't know… I think you should let your assistant handle that. My family is still not over me joining the police force, and—"

"Mmm, send it to my assistant when you get it." I cut him off, not giving him a chance to make excuses. I heard him huff in annoyance.

Then Yichen spoke. "Wait, why Long's condo? Shouldn't the person have gone to your penthouse instead?"

He was right. There was no reason for the person to use Long's condo. Unless…

"Zhen Long?!" Yichen scolded, already on the same wavelength as me. "Don't tell me this is one of your childish pranks."

Long scoffed and answered arrogantly. "First off, who knows of drugs powerful enough to take down a Z-Gen Alpha?" My brows furrowed furrowed in thought.

Long continued " Which means, whoever is behind it must be very powerful, have access to a lab, and a grudge huge enough to dare go after that lunatic." I rolled my eyes at his pathetic insult. "Which brings the list down to… Anyone that has ever crossed paths with him." His annoying laughter filled the line.

"If I find out you had something to do with it…" I warned.

"Save your threats for the actual culprit, Feng Lang. I'm bored" He chipped in.

"Long, shut up." Yuchen chipped in. "Putting your feud with him aside, Long does has a point,Lang" I agreed with him, although I didn't say it out loud.

"Pass by my lab tomorrow for a test. There should be some residue in your blood. Well find out what drug was used soon enough." He added calmly.

"Alright" I answered. "By the way Zhen Long, the mess in the condo is your problem—And I'm pissing on all your clothes. Goodbye."

I didn't wait to hear a response, quickly hanging up the call.

The time was 15:43, which meant I slept through most of the day. I let out a sigh.

I shoved the phone in my pocket as I walked the rest of the way to the kitchen, stopping in front of the fridge.

There was the dry white mark again! This time, in the shape of a hand print.

It looked like whoever it was came to the fridge. To get water?

I scoffed.

Shaking my head, I opened the fridge, and as expected, it was void of any solid food whatsoever.

It made sense, since Long rarely used this place.

I grabbed one of the bottles of water, downing it in a go. Grabbed another one, and that was also gone in a few seconds. Then a third one, and a fourth, and a fifth, tossing each bottle away after I was done with it. I couldn't be bothered to keep Zhen Long's place neat.

On the kitchen island, something caught my attention. A lonely glass, half empty, perched at the very edge.

I inched closer to it. Around it were dry, white finger prints, the same kind smeared across the fridge.

The person was either too careless or too confident that they couldn't be caught. My stomach turned at the possibility of the latter option being right.

'Whoever is behind it must be very powerful, have access to a lab, and a grudge huge enough to dare go after that lunatic' Long's words rang in my ears and an unsettling feeling started in the pit of my stomach.

Quickly I shook my head to clear my thoughts. I'm Feng Lang, I didn't fear anyone. Whoever it was should fear me instead.

I pulled out one of the drawers and found a stash of plastic bags. I searched for the kind I wanted, transparent and sealable.

I took one out and slipped it over my hand, using it as makeshift glove.

I made sure not to touch the glass directly with my hands or any part of my body, for that matter, as I carefully lifted it and carried it to the kitchen sink, pouring out its content.

I gave it a quick shake to get rid of the remaining water in it. I read somewhere that water could tamper with the integrity of fingerprints or DNA.

Carefully opening a second plastic bag, I dropped the glass inside, sealing it neatly.

I took a picture of the plastic bag, sending it to Ruiqing with the message, "I've got DNA."

The reply came quickly after.

"Great! Let your assistant bring it by the precinct tomorrow. I'll take it to forensics." I chuckled.

I was shoving my phone in my pocket when it vibrated again. I frowned and let out an exasperated sigh.

The expression on my face changed when I saw the black and gold snake move across my darkened phone screen, forming an 'S'. A Logo I was very familiar with.

The snake disappeared, and an ominous sound tune played as the word 'SYNDICATE' zoomed in, followed by a golden envelope which opened to display the words "You're invited" in cursive.

A second later, the letter caught on fire and morphed into the exhaust of a motor which revved across my phone's screen. Disappearing, just like it came. All that took only about seven seconds.

My lips curved up into a smirk.

Buzz! buzz! buzz!

My phone vibrated in my palm as messages poured in from my group chat with the guys.

Wang Ruiqing: Received

Zhen Long: Received

Shen Yichen: Same

I typed in, "So we're going right?"

The replies took not a second long.

Wang Ruiqing: Yup. Been a while, man.

Zhen Long: Hell yeah!

Shen Yichen: Yes.

Okay, then…
