They Came for Me
POV: Aphrodite
Dawn comes too quickly and with unwelcome company.
I'm awake before the sun breaks the horizon, unable to shake the restlessness that's plagued me since Lucen's kiss. The memory sits heavy on my lips, a reminder of vulnerability I'm not sure how to process. My body feels charged with nervous energy, hyperaware of every sound in the pre-dawn darkness.
Beside the dying fire, Lyra sleeps peacefully for once. Cassian and Bastien are on watch at opposite ends of camp, their shapes barely visible in the gloom. The twins are somewhere nearby, I can feel them through the faint pull of bonds I haven't fully accepted yet.
Everything feels too quiet. Too still.
Then the wind shifts, and I catch the scent.
Nightfang. Not scouts this time. Authority.
