It was an interesting twist to fate.
San and Lin were destined for doom in that lifetime, and it was supposed to end simply with San's death. But Lin's persistence made the Heavenly Emperor put their fate to the test.
"You claim you're meant to be? Well, let's see," the Emperor said. "I'll give you lifetimes to prove it."
His punishment was simple: he would have multiple lifetimes with San. They would meet in them all, and then they would see if they ended up together.
Lin happily accepted the punishment as long as he would meet San again.
But fate was cruel. In every lifetime, they would never recall each other.
And so they had different lifetimes, the two of them meeting in them all and falling in love. But they never ended up together.
It always ended in a similar pattern: Lin would die because of San or while trying to save him. And he would end up gaining a scar in each lifetime.
