The Third Hokage leaned back slightly, pipe in hand. "You mentioned Naruto often provokes Sasuke and challenges him."
"Yes," Iruka replied, rubbing his temple with a wry smile. "Naruto seems convinced that beating Sasuke would make him number one. He challenges him constantly… and loses just as constantly."
The Hokage chuckled softly. "As you said, Naruto is sensitive at heart. Perhaps he senses Sasuke's loneliness."
He exhaled a thin stream of smoke, eyes distant. "Sometimes, bonds form that way. Through friction."
Iruka followed his gaze and nodded.
"Let it be natural," the Hokage continued after a pause. "Those two may end up walking an important path together. Just make sure you guide them well."
Iruka straightened, resolve settling in his expression. "I won't disappoint you."
After Iruka left, the Hokage sat alone for a long while, staring at the portrait on the wall. Two reports lay in his drawer, one for Naruto, one for Sasuke. He skimmed them briefly, then set them aside without comment.
The Ninja Academy buzzed with noise.
"Uchiha Sasuke."
"Here."
"Come collect your report."
Sasuke stepped forward and accepted the paper. "Thank you, sensei."
"Wait," Iruka added, raising his voice. "Everyone, Sasuke placed first again this month. Learn from him."
Cheers broke out from one side of the room. Groans from another.
"Especially you, Naruto," Iruka said, pointing.
Naruto slammed his desk. "I don't need his help. I'll beat him next time and become the strongest!"
Laughter followed. Sasuke didn't react. He returned to his seat as if nothing had happened.
"Sasuke-kun, you're amazing," Sakura said, leaning closer.
"Thanks," he replied evenly.
She hesitated, then spoke more quietly. "Your chakra control during the ninjutsu test was really good. Is there a reason?"
Sasuke glanced at her. "I should be thanking you."
Her eyes lit up. "Then… can I ask you something?"
After a moment, he nodded. "Start with tree-walking and water-walking. Once you master those, your control will improve quickly. With your basics, it won't take long."
Sakura nodded, thinking. "And after that?"
"What's your chakra nature?" he asked.
"Water and Earth," she answered immediately.
Sasuke paused, considering. Then he began explaining, quietly and precisely.
Across the room, Yamanaka Ino watched, gripping her report card.
Why does he never talk to me?
Her fingers tightened around the paper.
