Magnemite are gray, mechanical Pokémon consisting of a spherical body with a single large eye in the center and two horseshoe magnets on either side with opposite poles. Atop their heads sits a large screw that acts as an antenna for signals, while two smaller screws are positioned on the front. These components can rotate freely, allowing Magnemite to emit electromagnetic waves that negate gravity, letting them hover.
Magneton, on the other hand, appear to be three Magnemite linked together. Their combined magnetic force is so potent they can raise the ambient temperature by 2 degrees Celsius within a one-kilometer radius. In large groups, they are capable of triggering devastating magnetic storms.
These seem like wild Magnemite and Magneton. Why did they suddenly surround us? Feng Che mused. He realized his "Heart Voice" ability had a limitation: it couldn't perceive the thoughts of inorganic or highly advanced Psychic-type Pokémon easily.
Speaking of Magneton, Lt. Surge is the true master of them, Feng Che thought with a hint of envy. He uses four Magneton to form an electrical cage or even uses them as a platform to fly freely.
"Litten, use Fire Fang!" "Froakie, use Bubble!"
Feng Che released his two starters. Since the area was secluded, he wasn't worried about anyone identifying his team.
Litten transformed into a blur of crimson light, its fiery fangs clamping down on a Magnemite. The magnets on the mechanical creature instantly glowed red-hot, losing their magnetism and causing the Pokémon to disassemble and fall to the ground.
Froakie, meanwhile, snatched frubbles from its back and began sticking Magnemite to the pavement. The adhesive foam worked like industrial-strength glue; once anchored, the Magnemite were helpless.
[Froakie: These floating tin cans are perfect target practice for my throwing skills. Just need to make sure I don't get zapped, or I'll lose face.]
Feng Che noticed that the leader, a rusted Magneton, hadn't attacked yet. It hovered silently, its body pitted with age. Steel-types require regular maintenance to prevent rust, which can cause electrical malfunctions.
Pokémon: Magneton Potential: Excellent (Yellow) Ability: Analytic Level: 32 Type: Steel/Electric Status: Poor Physical Condition Evaluation: Abandoned by its trainer after multiple failed attempts to evolve it. It retreated to this power plant to lead the Magnemite swarms.
Failed evolution attempts? The previous trainer clearly didn't know the secrets of Magnezone, Feng Che thought, scratching his head.
There are two ways to evolve a Magneton, both of which can boost its potential. The first is leveling it up within the unique magnetic field of Mt. Coronet in Sinnoh. The second is using a high-grade Thunder Stone—an extremely rare resource usually reserved for more "prestigious" Pokémon.
However, there's a third way I learned from my gaming days, Feng Che recalled. A player discovered that trading a Magneton while it holds a Thunder Stone triggers evolution upon release. The higher the quality of the stone, the more terrifying the resulting Magnezone's potential.
A Magnezone's market value far exceeded a Magneton's. If I can evolve this one and auction it at the black market, I'll have more than enough to start my own nursery, he planned.
"Froakie, use Water Pulse! Litten, use Flame Charge!"
Feng Che decided to capture it. The Magneton erupted with electricity, blasting a Water Pulse out of the air. But as the water vaporized, Litten burst through the mist, slamming into the Magneton with the full heat of a Flame Charge.
The Magneton's metallic shell began to glow. In response to the heat, it detached its three units to dissipate the energy.
"Litten, back! Let Froakie handle the rest."
Froakie leaped through the steam, launching a spinning Water Pulse. The impact of the cool water on the superheated metal caused a sharp crackling sound.
Perfect, Feng Che noted. Thermal expansion and contraction. The sudden temperature shift is fracturing its structural integrity.
"Now, Froakie! Glue its three units down!"
Froakie flung three clusters of frubbles, pinning the separated Magnemite units to the floor. After a period of struggling, the Magneton exhausted its energy and went still.
"Go, Poké Ball!"
Feng Che threw an Unregistered Ball—a favorite tool of poachers. Pokémon caught in these are not recorded in the League's central database. To keep his team a secret, Feng Che had already moved Litten and Ditto into similar unregistered balls.
With the Magneton caught, Feng Che heard the sound of approaching footsteps. He quickly recalled his Pokémon and vanished into the night.
"What happened here? Why are all these Magnemite down?"
A group of local thugs with multicolored, mohawk-style hair arrived. These were the guards for the "abandoned" plant.
"Must have been a strong trainer," the leader grumbled, scratching his head. "Wait, where's the Magneton boss? It's gone. Forget it—the leaks in this plant are getting worse anyway. The boss is too cheap to fix the equipment, even though it powers the whole market."
When they returned to the plant's entrance, they found a figure in a black cloak and a smiley-face mask waiting patiently.
"At least you know the rules," the leader sneered. "If you'd trespassed, our Electric Pokémon would have zapped you into next week. Entering the black market requires a letter of recommendation and 1,000 Dollars, or 10,000 Dollars for an open slot."
Feng Che handed over ten high-quality Snow Lotus Fruits.
"Snow Lotus? These are worth at least 2,000 a piece. You've got class, kid," the leader said, satisfied. "Follow me."
He led Feng Che to a dilapidated "open-air" elevator—a simple platform controlled by a rope and lever. "Rules are simple: no Pokémon battles in the market. The enforcers will kill you before you can blink. By the way, there's an auction tonight at 3:00 AM. Since your fruits made me a nice profit, take this VIP invitation."
Feng Che took the gold-leafed card. "The auction house is run by Celadon's biggest syndicate. You can sell anything—herbs, Pokémon, gear—right up until the start time."
The lever was pulled, and Feng Che descended into the depths. The elevator dropped rapidly until it hit the cavern floor. It was a massive grotto illuminated by glowing mushrooms, some as large as millstones.
Feng Che followed the stone steps for fifteen minutes until the tunnel opened up. Before him lay the bustling, neon-lit chaos of the Celadon Underground Black Market.
