A Kingler is not in the same league as a Krabby. While a Krabby's pincer might draw blood, a Kingler's claw can snap a human clean in half. In the Pokémon world, they are often whispered about as "Slayer Crabs." Most seasoned Trainers give them a wide berth in the wild, as Kingler are carnivorous and known to be naturally aggressive toward humans.
Feng Che had no desire to provoke one either. However, the treasure chest near its feet and the silver key hanging from its claw were essential for passing the evaluation.
Pokémon: Kingler Gender: Male Potential: Elite (Orange) Ability: Hyper Cutter Level: 25 Type: Water Moves: Water Gun, Metal Claw, Harden, Leer, Hammer Arm, Mud Shot, Protect, Bubble Beam, Stomp, Crabhammer, Dive Status: Happy
A Level 25 Kingler. It hasn't learned Guillotine yet. As long as I devise a sound strategy, Rookidee and Ditto (in Golbat form) should be able to take it on together, Feng Che calculated.
He currently had five empty Poké Balls left. In this world, using an official League ball to catch a Pokémon means you are legally responsible for it. Abandoning a Pokémon is a serious crime that can lead to prison time, as it disrupts the local ecology. To manage this, every ball contains an ID chip.
This Kingler has a solid move set and 'Elite' potential. Catching it would net a massive amount of points.
To get to the Kingler, he first had to deal with its swarm of Krabby underlings. This was where his "Sweet Scent" concoction would shine.
Feng Che spent the next hour in intense concentration. Using his expertise, he mixed the Bellsprout saliva with Pecha and Oran berry juices in a 1:1 ratio. He then ground down several "Peak Grass" leaves into a fine medicinal paste, dividing it into six precise portions—accurate to three decimal places.
The result was a highly concentrated lure. Once a container was broken, the scent would spread for a kilometer, drawing every wild Pokémon in the vicinity toward it like a magnet.
The lure is ready, he thought, wiping sweat from his brow. He also prepared a "Hallucinogenic Mushroom" trap as a fail-safe. If the Kingler proved too strong, he'd throw a lure-coated mushroom. Once eaten, the Kingler would be at his mercy, though he'd have to survive its initial hallucination-induced frenzy.
"Stay back, Ditto. Don't touch it," Feng Che snapped, swatting away the pink blob's curious reach. Ditto had smelled the "Sweet Scent" and thought it was a tasty treat.
He quickly sprayed a "Wind-Heron" mist on Ditto and Rookidee. To humans, the scent was neutral, but to Pokémon, it acted as an "anti-scent," making the lure smell repulsive so they wouldn't fall for their own trap.
"Alright, let's set the stage. We need to use the forest terrain to our advantage."
Feng Che knew Ditto had beaten a Level 25 Raticate before, but that was a fluke involving a dying Pokémon and a dirty trick. This Kingler was healthy and dangerous.
"Ditto, transform into Electrode!"
Ditto shifted into the armless, spherical Pokémon. It resembled an upside-down Poké Ball with a smug grin. As an Electrode, which is essentially a silicon-based lifeform, it lacked traditional olfactory senses—meaning it couldn't smell the lure at all.
Feng Che chose a spot on the forest path where dozens of Oddish were buried. During the day, they look like harmless clumps of weeds.
The Oddish leaves will act as natural tripwires for the Krabby, he reasoned. And since Oddish are buried deep, they won't be seriously hurt by Water-type attacks.
"Rookidee, begin the lure."
He coated a smooth pebble with a drop of the scent and had Rookidee carry it. "Fly low and flap your wings to spread the smell toward the beach. Lead them here 2 or 3 at a time. No more."
On the beach, a Krabby was digging for shells when it caught a whiff of something divine. It was an irresistible, intoxicating aroma. Forgetting its leader's orders, it and two companions scuttled toward the forest path.
Rookidee led them like a pied piper, leading them straight to the "Oddish trap."
"Arbok—I mean, Electrode—get ready!"
As the Krabby entered the clearing, distracted by the pebble, Electrode let out a crackle of golden electricity. A bolt of lightning struck the lead Krabby, sending it into a spasming dance. It collapsed, smoke curling from its shell.
The other two Krabby were so entranced by the scent they barely noticed their fallen comrade. Electrode struck again, downing the second one.
Before it could hit the third, Rookidee dove in, chirping loudly.
"Hey! I lured them here, save one for me!"
In Ditto's mind, defeating enemies equaled better food. It didn't want to share. As the two bickered, Feng Che intervened. "Enough. Ditto, let Rookidee have this one. She did the work."
Electrode huffed but desisted. Seeing an opportunity to "show off" on its own terms, Ditto shifted into Golbat, snatched the scent-pebble, and flew toward the beach.
[Ditto: I'll lure them myself! Then I get all the credit. I'm a genius!]
"Ditto! Don't bring too many back at once!" Feng Che yelled after it. I have a bad feeling about this.
With Ditto gone, Rookidee focused on the remaining Krabby. "Rookidee, use Peck!"
She dove, but her beak clattered harmlessly against the Krabby's thick carapace. The Krabby, snapped out of its trance by the pain, retaliated with a Water Gun. The weak stream missed Rookidee and hit the Oddish leaves, which soaked up the water happily.
"Rookidee, use Whirlwind!"
Rookidee flapped her wings with newfound power, creating a localized gale. The Krabby struggled to keep its footing, digging its claws into the Oddish leaves to keep from being blown away.
"Perfect. Now, Fury Attack!"
Rookidee's beak became a white blur, striking the Krabby's joints and eyes. The shell cracked, and the Krabby fainted.
Rookidee reached Level 7!
Just then, Feng Che heard the frantic flapping of Golbat wings. It sounded desperate. Behind it came a thunderous, heavy clattering of dozens—no, scores—of claws.
Feng Che's face paled.
That sound... it's too heavy for Krabby. That idiot Ditto led the Kingler right to us!
