Chapter 38 - The Death Island Map

"With a steady supply of my potions, this Rookidee could easily reach the 'Excellence' (Green) rank," Feng Che mused, rubbing his chin. "But I need to see if it actually wants to follow me before I waste a ball."

To him, Ditto's mimicry made it an "Excellence" rank Pokémon by default. But I need to push the Arbok form to its limit. If Ditto can master 'Death Makeup,' it'll be unstoppable.

He laid out his own pillows and blankets on the bed's dry grass padding. It had been a grueling day, and he fell asleep almost instantly. When he woke up, it was 10:00 PM. The fire had died down to white embers. After a quick snack, he went back to sleep, the Ditto and Rookidee curled up at the foot of the bed.

The next morning, the storm had finally passed, leaving half a meter of standing water on the forest floor. As the sun rose, the water began to evaporate or be absorbed by the thirsty roots.

"Typical tropical climate," Feng Che noted. "Metabolism is faster here, meaning the Pokémon will be stronger and more aggressive than those in Kanto."

The Rookidee chirped a morning greeting. Feng Che smiled and offered it a handful of dried Kasib Berries—a favorite among bird Pokémon that helped strengthen their skeletal structure.

"Ditto, wake up. Sun's burning your tail."

The blob didn't budge until Feng Che shouted, "Breakfast time!"

Ditto's eyes snapped open, looking around suspiciously as if to say, 'Where's the food?'

"Let's scout the perimeter."

Following the map he found, Feng Che realized he was on the outer rim of the island. The "small map" centered on the treehouse revealed more secrets: a nearby ranch, a berry orchard, and a fish pond. Most interestingly, a single word was written in the center of the lake: "SHIP."

He visited the ranch first. It was abandoned, the previous occupant likely having taken their Pokémon with them when they left. Next was the berry orchard. It was overgrown but full of Pecha, Oran, and Kasib berries.

"The previous owner must have been a Master Planter, or had a Pokémon specialized in gardening," he noted, impressed by the irrigation system.

Finally, he reached the "fish pond," which was actually a large, pristine lake. Two water wheels were still functioning; one pumped lake water into a smaller reservoir, and the other funneled water into trenches that irrigated the orchard.

In the middle of the lake sat a massive wooden ship—an unfinished project. Beside it were several smaller dugouts.

"He was building a ship to escape the island, but for some reason, he abandoned it. These dugouts look seaworthy, though."

Feng Che looked toward the horizon, his mind already calculating his next move.
