Chrollo had mastered the bookmark after all.
A single ability still carried too many restrictions. With the bookmark he could link every technique stored inside Bandit's Secret, even combine them into effects stronger than the sum of their parts.
Ronin was not surprised.
Under normal circumstances Chrollo should not have reached that level for another two years. Ronin's presence had clearly accelerated the process. Once the direction of development became obvious, the earlier breakthrough was only natural.
What interested him now was which ability would come next.
The monkeys.
Three large monkeys materialized out of empty air not far from him the moment Chrollo slid the bookmark into place and turned the page.
Ronin's pupils tightened.
He had expected Chrollo to support Nobunaga's assault, or to produce some refined method of planting Hisoka's antenna. He had never expected the sudden appearance of three monkeys.
More importantly, he recognized the ability the instant he saw their distinctive features.
Xiyou.
Zodiac of the Hunter Association. Bounty hunter. Martial artist. Ally of Beyond Netero.
The manga had already shown his Nen: three monkeys capable of stripping sight, hearing, and speech through physical contact.
The page Chrollo had just activated summoned those exact, unmistakable creatures.
It could only be Xiyou's power.
Had Beyond chosen to back Chrollo, or had Chrollo somehow investigated, located, and stolen the ability himself?
Ronin leaned toward the first possibility.
Xiyou was a pure combat specialist. His strength was never something to underestimate. The Troupe might be able to defeat him in open battle, but capturing him alive and stripping the ability felt nearly impossible.
If Beyond had arranged the transfer, how had he persuaded a man like Xiyou to hand the power over? Ronin did not believe Xiyou would willingly lend it. He also did not believe Chrollo, once in possession of the ability, would ever return it.
Either way, the fact that Xiyou's power now sat in Chrollo's book traced back to two causes: the information Ronin himself had released online about Chrollo's ability, and whatever opportunity Beyond had glimpsed inside that same ability.
Everything ultimately pointed at Beyond.
What the man actually wanted remained unclear.
This was not the moment to dwell on it.
Avoiding the Vision Monkey was the only priority that mattered.
Nobunaga's attack power was still an unknown, yet in Ronin's assessment it currently posed the least threat. Even after exploding into extreme speed the swordsman never closed the distance. Roughly four meters out he abruptly sank into a thick, sluggish crawl.
Amenotokotachi.
The moment Susanoo vanished, Ronin had already activated the left eye's power—not against any single enemy, but as a hollow spherical seal centered on his own body.
That sealed sphere was now his strongest defense. Standing at its exact center, he remained free to form seals and release ninjutsu without restriction.
Ronin clapped his hands together in front of his chest.
Whatever elaborate arrangement the Troupe had prepared, his response was simple.
Wipe them out.
The instant Nobunaga's body bogged down inside the sealed space, the seals finished and the technique ignited.
Fire Style: Fire Dragon Flame Bullet.
A massive dragon head erupted the moment Amenotokotachi released, swallowing Nobunaga whole and carrying him away in a roaring surge of flame.
An explosion tore the dragon apart in mid-air. Scorch marks blackened Nobunaga's clothing and skin, yet his grip on the hilt never loosened. The blast's residual force launched him straight toward Ronin like a living projectile.
The four-meter radius was almost upon him.
A second dragon head burst from the side and clamped shut around Nobunaga's body in one clean bite.
Fire Dragon Flame Bullet had always produced three dragons.
Given the way Nobunaga had appeared, Ronin had never released the hand seals. Chakra continued to drive the remaining two dragons—one locked on the swordsman, the other charging the approaching monkeys.
At the same time his gaze caught the faintest movement along the floor.
Nen threads, completely silent, sliding toward his feet.
Machi. She had placed In on the threads and intended to repeat the earlier binding tactic. The threads no longer carried Chrollo's Spider Silk, but one of them still held an antenna. That was the real danger.
Across the room, Franklin's expression turned sharp the moment the second fire dragon swallowed Nobunaga again.
The humanoid bomb built into his chest had been a cooperative technique created specifically for this fight. Nobunaga launched from it carried Franklin's Nen and was meant to detonate on contact like a guided missile. The explosion would not harm the swordsman; instead it would create the perfect opening for a killing stroke.
From the moment they designed the ability, both of them had assumed Ronin would try to intercept with some form of barrier or counter-technique. Franklin's own aura had been layered on top simply to guarantee the delivery reached its target.
The combination had still fallen short.
Franklin looked down at his chest. The temporary technique had never been something he placed great faith in. After Nobunaga left, the black cavity was gone; a stark skull emblem now marked the skin.
Ordinary methods really were useless against this opponent.
He watched the three monkeys about to be struck by the remaining fire dragon. He had no idea what further preparations Chrollo still held in reserve.
Before coming here, however, he had already made his decision.
The missiles inside his wrists remained unfired and returned to ordinary flesh. Ordinary projectiles would only be swatted aside the same way one brushes away a fly.
So.
Franklin pressed his palm flat against the center of his chest.
A square panel clicked open beneath his hand, revealing the fuse nested inside.
If ordinary missiles could not kill Ronin, then what about the humanoid missile that contained every last drop of his Nen and his life?
Ronin never noticed the change.
He leapt, both feet coming together in a sharp clap while still in the air.
When he landed, a torrent of water exploded upward from the ground in a perfect circle around him. The rising spray solidified into a continuous barrier that sealed him at its center and simultaneously flung the approaching Nen threads high into the air.
Water Style: Water Formation Wall.
