Ronin did not enter first.

He stepped aside and left the doorway clear.

He had already seen Pairo's head inside the Fourth Prince's memories.

The two of them had never shared any real connection. The body's original owner had crossed paths with Pairo a few times, nothing close. Kurapika was different.

Pairo had been his closest friend—the one whose vision had deteriorated after saving Kurapika's life. That single fact was the entire reason Kurapika had once argued so fiercely to leave the village and find a cure for those eyes.

Neither of them could have imagined the separation would become permanent.

When Kurapika saw Ronin's deliberate step back, he already understood. During the long investigation into the Scarlet Eyes he had learned about the preserved heads. Descriptions from certain sources had already allowed him to guess which skull carried the most beautiful pair of Scarlet Eyes of all.

He did not refuse the silent offer. One last glance at Ronin, then he walked into the vault alone.

Ronin exhaled quietly and remained outside with Shizuku and the others, holding the perimeter.

Time stretched. The first sirens rose from the lower slope—police cars climbing the hillside road.

Shizuku, Neon, and Abachi exchanged a single look and left without a word, completely surrendering the vault to Ronin and Kurapika.

Once clear of the underground entrance they began cleaning the residual problems still scattered through the villa: the unconscious security staff, the approaching patrol cars.

They never noticed the several pairs of eyes that had already settled on them from the dark.

"Leave it to me."

Pakunoda's voice was quiet.

The seven remaining members of the Phantom Troupe had arrived.

After taking control of Xiyou they had learned almost immediately of the assault at the hillside villa. More accurately, every move they made had been under outside surveillance from the beginning. The moment Xiyou fell into their hands, the villa's location was simply handed to them.

Chrollo was intensely curious about the unseen hand directing events.

Pakunoda had already pulled the name from Xiyou's memories: Beyond Netero.

A man who had spent more than a decade arranging pieces inside Kakin, always waiting for the chance to reach the Dark Continent.

Chrollo knew almost nothing about that place, only the fragment Xiyou had provided—that it seemed to lie outside the normal world. He could not yet see Beyond's final purpose, but the pattern of the man's actions was clear enough. He was selecting. From the Phantom Troupe, from Ronin's group, from Xiyou himself—choosing the ones who satisfied some private standard. What came after that selection would only become clear once a winner stood in front of Beyond.

"Can you manage alone?" Chrollo asked, a rare note of concern in his voice.

Pakunoda was not a combat specialist. Even if the three opponents were not particularly strong, sending her by herself still left him uneasy.

"I only need to keep them occupied. The real work is yours. If you can finish Ronin, everything else falls into place." Her tone carried absolute resolve. "My ability has almost no value in a straight fight. Let me do the one thing I can still do."

She left with the quiet determination to hold them even if it cost her life.

She understood her own role perfectly. Support. Almost nothing in direct combat. Against Ronin the gap was even clearer—if she ever found a clean shot, the bullet would never reach him. And if a bullet of hers somehow could reach him, the battle would already have been decided without her.

Her task now was simple: fire on the three figures leaving the villa and pull them away from the grounds.

Gunfire cracked across the slope.

Shizuku intercepted the first rounds with Blinky. Abachi's head snapped toward the origin of the shots in the same instant. Neon was already moving, a pen appearing between her fingers. The moment she locked eyes on a confirmed identity the curse would activate.

Abachi glanced once more toward the villa. A low premonition told her the shots were meant to draw them off.

She still followed when Shizuku charged after Neon. Her only action was a few quick taps on her phone, sending a short message to Ronin.

Inside the team, Ronin was the one person who never needed protection.

If someone wanted to target them, let that someone go find Ronin instead. That was probably exactly the situation he preferred.

On the drive up the mountain Ronin and Kurapika had already predicted it: if the Phantom Troupe was present in Kakin, the moment the Scarlet Eyes were secured the Troupe would almost certainly appear.

Was this diversion their work?

Ronin's only standing order against the Troupe had been simple—protect yourselves.

Abachi's fingers tightened around her fishing rod. Even with that order, their three-person squad (originally four) still carried its own judgment.

Inside the villa Ronin felt the phone vibrate against his side.

He checked the message from Abachi.

No hesitation. A scroll came free from the pack at his back. He unrolled it and poured chakra into the paper. A pre-sealed shadow clone stepped out in a burst of smoke.

The clone moved at once toward the underground passage leading to the vault, spreading En as it walked.

The next second its body convulsed violently and dissolved into nothing on the stairs.

At the top of those same stairs stood a figure in a long black coat. One hand held Bandit's Secret open. The other aimed a phone camera directly at the spot where the clone had stood.

Chrollo looked down the stairwell, eyes serious.

If anyone asked the Phantom Troupe which of Ronin's abilities they feared most after so many encounters, the answer was always the same.

Shadow clones.

Constructs indistinguishable from the original in both appearance and aura—the single most troublesome element in any fight against him. The fact that those clones also carried real combat strength only multiplied the difficulty.

When Chrollo had searched for counters, two priorities stood above all others: sealing vision, and breaking the clone technique.

Fortunately he now possessed both.

The open page of Bandit's Secret recorded the ability's name: True Form.

Any existence captured by the camera device in his hand was forced to reveal its most authentic state.

The original user had been a shut-in tormented by endless makeup filters and beauty apps, developing the ability simply to see people's real faces. Once it entered Chrollo's book it found a far more practical use.

Ronin's clones were Nen constructs.

Under the lens of True Form, that construct had nowhere to hide.

What appeared in Chrollo's camera was a humanoid shape of pure, glowing red energy.
