Pektaro reached his answer fast.
He could die.
The Scarlet Eyes in his pack were the main reason. Once Beyond noticed Ronin's peculiarities, the investigation had gone deep. They knew Ronin was Kurta. They knew the eyes were tied to his strength.
Thirteen pairs sat in the backpack. Pektaro had no idea how many would drop on death, but even half of them leaving the field would put a ceiling on how much stronger Ronin could get. The fight with Beyond was still fresh. Ronin was dangerous. Beyond had not gone all-out, and Ronin had not been at his peak either. Beyond might not care about that gap. Pektaro did.
Eyes carried back alive would also become leverage. Either way, death paid better than survival. The only intelligence a living man could deliver was that Ronin could cross thousands of kilometers in an instant. Beyond's curse was already on him. That much would leak on its own.
Pektaro straightened.
"You're good," he said. "Just not that good."
Ronin looked at a man asking to die and smiled.
The seals were already finished. His hand came down on Pektaro's head.
He did not know what the little man was counting on. He did know he could read the memory directly. Mind Reading would do the work. First the target had to be unconscious.
Power detonated through the palm. Pektaro gave a dull grunt and went under.
They were not in the same tier. In a straight fight Pektaro sat somewhere around Shizuku. The real problem was the Hatsu. The backpack was probably only one piece of it.
Chakra slid into the unconscious mind. Ronin went looking for the ability itself. Compared with digging through Beyond's secrets, this was simple.
He found the Hatsu.
Then he found Beyond's face.
The Curse Eye bloomed inside the memory.
Ronin sucked in a sharp breath and tore himself free. Pektaro woke at the same instant. He stared at Ronin the way a man stares at something that should not exist. His mouth opened. Nothing came out.
Ronin flicked chakra threads into him.
The ability was called 24-Hour Game Experience. Pure support. Full Specialist.
From the moment it activated, Pektaro became a fully digitized game character for twenty-four hours. Death cost a life. Lives could be bought with items. Save points could be found. Each activation was followed by a week of complete Zetsu. During the twenty-four hours themselves he could do things ordinary Nen users never could, as long as he collected the right props.
The backpack was one of those props.
Before the operation he had already taken a save. Killing him here would only send him back to the checkpoint. A field death would make him drop some of what he carried—not all of it.
Ronin already had the method that got everything.
Puppet Technique.
Treat him the way he treated Owl. Make the hands reach into the pack and empty it.
Killing him afterward was another problem. Dead or alive, when the twenty-four hours ended Pektaro would vanish and reappear at the save point. Even a perfect puppet would only last the remaining hours.
It was one of the stranger abilities Ronin had seen. That strangeness was exactly why a fighter this weak had a seat on Beyond's team. For a Dark Continent expedition, a man who did not stay dead was hard to replace.
Pektaro watched his own hand, under the threads, reach into the backpack and start pulling Scarlet Eyes out one pair at a time.
A new calculation formed.
Living long enough to carry the information back mattered more. That meant he could not let Ronin kill him before the timer ran out.
The thought arrived too late.
The last pair left the pack. Ronin's fist was already moving.
The sound was wet and final. Pektaro's head came apart like a smashed melon.
Kurapika and Pakunoda had both just finished waking up. They saw the whole thing.
Color left their faces. For a second both of them looked certain the next punch was theirs.
On Kurapika the fear stayed. On Pakunoda it lasted less than two seconds. What replaced it was the flat expression of someone who had already decided she was done with living.
The pieces on the floor changed.
Flesh broke into mosaic, then the mosaic crumbled and vanished. In a few seconds nothing of Pektaro remained inside the cave.
Ronin looked from the empty stone to Kurapika.
Kurapika had already gathered the Scarlet Eyes with Pairo's head. Grief and apology sat together in his face.
"Big Brother Ronin."
"Leave it to me."
Ronin answered without hesitation and walked toward Pakunoda.
