THURSDAY - DAY TWO
Adrian woke up at 4:30 AM without an alarm. His body was already adjusting to the new schedule.
He showered, got dressed, and went downstairs. Rebecca was already in the kitchen, thermos of coffee ready.
"Good morning."
"Good morning." She handed him the thermos and a bag. "I made sandwiches for lunch. I don't know if you'll have time to go to the food truck."
"Thanks."
This time he ate the granola bar without being asked. Rebecca smiled.
The drive was calmer than yesterday. Less nervous. More... anticipation.
They arrived at 5:50 AM.
"Same pickup time?" Rebecca asked.
"Probably. I'll let you know if there are any changes."
"Have fun."
Adrian got out of the car. This time, as he walked toward the entrance, he felt less like an intruder and more like someone who belonged there.
WARDROBE AND MAKEUP
The same routine as yesterday. The wardrobe woman recognized him.
"Cole, right? Cubicle three, same clothes as yesterday."
"Thanks."
In makeup, the same young woman from yesterday waved him over.
"Hello again. How was your first day?"
"Good. Very good."
"It shows. You look less tense." She started applying his makeup. "Most people take a few days to relax. You're already settling in."
Adrian didn't know if that was because of the templates or simply because he'd decided to try and feel things. Probably both.
"Thanks."
EXTRAS AREA - 6:45 AM
Marcus was already there, coffee in hand, talking to Emma and David.
"Cole! Over here!"
Adrian walked over. This time he didn't hesitate before sitting down with them.
"Good morning."
"Good morning, brother. Ready for day two?"
"Yes."
Emma smiled. "Day two is when it really begins. Yesterday you were learning. Today we'll see if you can keep up."
It wasn't a challenge. It was a friendly observation.
"I'll do my best."
David took a sip of his coffee. "Do you have stunt rehearsal today?"
"At ten."
"Danny Chen, right?"
"Yes."
"He's one of the good ones. Demanding, but fair. If he tells you to do something a certain way, there's a reason." David paused. "And if he tells you that you did well, believe him. He doesn't give empty compliments."
Adrian absorbed the information. "Good to know."
7:30 AM - SCENE ONE
The 2nd AD entered the tent.
"Extras for scene fifty-two. I need twenty. Street scene, crowd walking. Everyone who was on scene forty-seven yesterday, plus... you, you, you..." He gestured to several new extras.
The group followed the PA to the exterior set.
It was a fake street, but incredibly detailed. Storefronts, parked cars, working traffic lights. If you didn't know it was a set, it would look like a real street in Los Angeles.
The 2nd AD positioned them.
"You're walking down the street during rush hour. You're not running, but you're not strolling either. You have places to go. When I say 'action,' you start from those marks. When I say 'cut,' freeze where you are. Got it?"
Murmurs of confirmation.
"And remember: don't look at the camera. The main actors will be in that car." He pointed to a black convertible in the middle of the street. "You guys are completely ignoring them."
Marcus approached Adrian. "This is easy. Just walk naturally. I'll be beside you, so just keep up with me."
"Understood."
"Positions!"
Adrian took his marks. He breathed. His body wanted to analyze everything: the exact distance, the camera timing, the optimal angle. He let it go. Just... be present.
"And... ACTION!"
He started walking. Marcus beside him, silently talking (moving his lips without sound). Adrian responded in kind. Natural stride. Consistent speed. Arms swinging normally.
The car passed on his right. Adrian didn't look at it. He just kept walking, "talking" to Marcus.
"CUT!"
They froze.
"Good. Very good. Again, same positions."
They returned to their marks.
Take two. Three. Four.
On the fourth take, Adrian felt something strange. He wasn't thinking. He was just... walking. Being part of the scene. His body knew exactly where to be, when to move, how to blend in.
It wasn't superhuman. It was natural.
"CUT! Perfect. We've got it. Fifteen minutes, everyone."
Marcus stretched. "See, I told you. Easy."
"Yeah." Adrian looked around the set. "But it doesn't feel like work."
Marcus laughed. "Wait until you've been standing under hot lights for eight hours, repeating the same scene twenty times. Then it'll feel like work."
9:45 AM
The PA found him in the extras area.
"Cole. Danny's waiting for you in the stunt unit in ten minutes."
"I'm on my way."
Marcus punched him in the shoulder. "Good luck, bro."
"Thanks."
Adrian walked toward the stunt studio. This time, he felt butterflies in his stomach. Not bad nerves. Anticipation.
STUNT UNIT - 10:00 AM
Danny was waiting with a man in his thirties: athletic, dark-haired, with a professional expression.
"Cole, you're right on time. Good." Danny pointed to the other man. "This is Marcus Rivera. He does the scene right before you fall."
Marcus (not the extra Marcus, this was someone else) nodded. "Hey."
"Hi."
Danny led them to the ladder mounted against the wall. Eight feet high, thick mats at the bottom.
"Here's the scene. Marcus, your character is fighting the lead. You push Cole down the ladder. Cole, you fall. We need it to look real, violent, but safe. Three takes from different angles."
He paused.
"Marcus, you push here." He touched Adrian's shoulder. "Not too hard, just enough to start the movement. Cole does the rest."
Adrian nodded. "Understood."
"Okay. Let's do a dry run first. Marcus, get in position."
Marcus Rivera climbed the ladder to where Adrian was. He stood in front of him.
"When Danny says 'action,' I'll turn, push you here..." He gently touched Adrian's shoulder. "And you fall. In the rehearsal, just simulate the movement. Don't actually fall yet."
"Okay."
Danny yelled from below, "Action!"
Marcus turned, reached up, and touched Adrian's shoulder.
Adrian pretended to lose his balance, leaning back, but stopped before falling.
"Cut!" Danny climbed the ladder. "Good. But Cole, when you actually fall, I need you to look more surprised. Your arms flailing, searching for something to grab onto. Can you do that?"
Adrian processed. His instinct was to fall cleanly, with control. But Danny wanted drama. Realism.
"Yeah, I can do that."
"Good. Now let's do it for real. Cameras ready."
Two cameras were positioned: one at ground level, the other at a high angle.
"Positions!"
Adrian stepped up.
"And... ACTION!"
Marcus spun, pushed.
Adrian let his body react. Arms flailing. A look of surprise. But as he fell, his inner control took over. He landed on his shoulders, distributed his weight, rolled smoothly.
He lay on the ground for a second before moving, like someone who's just fallen and needs to process what happened.
"CUT!"
Silence.
Adrian stood up slowly, rubbing his shoulder as if it were slightly sore.
Danny watched him with his arms crossed. Then he smiled.
"Perfect. Exactly what I needed. Real surprise, dramatic fall, but safe landing. Are you okay?"
"Yes."
"Good. Two more takes from other angles."
They repeated the scene. Second take, third take. Each time, Adrian made slight adjustments: more arm flailing, more mid-air twisting, but always landing safely.
"CUT! We got it. Great job, Cole."
Marcus Rivera stepped down and offered his hand. "That was a perfect fall, man. How long have you been doing this?"
"It's my second day."
Marcus blinked. "Really?"
"Really."
"Damn. You've got natural talent."
Danny came over. "Cole, great job today. I'm going to call you for more stunts. Interested?"
Adrian didn't hesitate. "Yeah."
"Perfect. I'll get in touch."
11:00 AM - BACK TO EXTRAS
Adrian returned to the extras area. Marcus (the extra) immediately bombarded him.
"How was it?"
"Good. We did three takes."
"Did you get hurt?"
"No."
"Was Danny happy?"
"I think so. He said he'll call me for more scenes."
Marcus whistled. "Dude, in two days you've got recurring stunt work. That's impressive."
Emma, who was listening nearby, added, "Most of us take months or years before we get an opportunity like that. You've got something special, Cole."
Adrian felt uncomfortable with the compliments. "I just did what they asked me to do."
"And you did it perfectly. That's why they'll keep calling you."
LUNCH - 12:30 PM
Adrian ate lunch with Marcus, Emma, David, and Lisa. This time, he participated more in the conversation.
Lisa asked him, "Did you always want to do stunt work?"
Adrian thought about it. "Not really. A month ago I didn't know what I wanted to do."
"And now?"
"Now... I think this could be something."
Emma smiled. "That's the first step. Realizing you belong here."
The conversation drifted to anecdotes from the set. David told a story about a director who made them repeat a scene 47 times because the extra in the background sneezed on the 46th take. Adrian laughed. A genuine laugh. Marcus noticed.
"It's good to see you laugh, brother. You were so serious yesterday."
"I was nervous."
"And today?"
Adrian considered the question honestly. "Today I feel... good. Like I'm where I'm supposed to be."
Marcus nodded. "That's the sign. When the set feels like home."
AFTERNOON - MORE BACKGROUND SCENES
The rest of the day was more background work. Office scene, restaurant scene, another street scene.
In each one, Adrian maintained perfect consistency. Same movements, same energy, never interfering with the main action.
The 2nd AD noticed it after the fifth scene of the day.
"Cole."
"Yeah?"
"Keep it up. I never worry about you on takes. You always know where to be."
"Thanks."
It wasn't a huge compliment. But coming from the 2nd AD, stressed and managing 50 people, it meant something.
6:45 PM - END OF DAY
"That's it! Good work, everyone. Same time tomorrow."
Adrian went back to the wardrobe department, returned the clothes, and removed his makeup.
As he walked toward the parking lot, his phone vibrated.
Tyler: How was day 2?
Adrian smiled and texted as he walked:
Adrian: Better than yesterday. I did my first live-action scene.
Tyler: WHAT!!! DETAILS. NOW.
Adrian: Falling off a ladder. Three takes. The coordinator said he'll call me back for more.
Tyler: DUDE. You're a STAR.
Adrian: I'm barely an extra.
Tyler: Extra today. Star tomorrow. I KNOW.
Adrian put his phone away, still smiling.
Rebecca was waiting for him in the same spot.
"Hey."
"Hey." Rebecca started the car. "Another good day?"
"Better."
"Better how?"
"I did my first stunt. They said they'll call me back for more."
Rebecca looked at him proudly. "Adrian, that's wonderful."
"And... I think I'm starting to get the hang of how it all works. The timing. The people. The job."
"You like it?"
Adrian stared out the window, watching Los Angeles go by. "Yes. I really like it."
THAT NIGHT - 9:00 PM
Adrian was in his bed, staring at the ceiling.
Two days. Just two days. But something had changed.
He had a friend on set (Marcus). He had a mentor (Danny). He had a job he liked. And for the first time in eleven years, he had something that felt like… purpose.
"Shadow," he said softly into the empty space, "I think I'm figuring it out. What to do. Who to be."
Silence, of course.
But it didn't feel so empty anymore.
He rolled onto his side and closed his eyes.
Tomorrow would be day three.
And for the first time, he wasn't just ready.
He was excited.
