Chapter 36 - The Night That Wouldn’t End

Lantern light flooded the road.

Villagers gathered, whispering as they took in the scene, fallen bandits, scorched dirt, and blood darkening the ground.

Someone spoke.

"Is it… over?"

Akari stood in the middle of it all, her swords already sheathed, her hands clenched at her sides.

She opened her mouth.

But no sound came out.

Her throat felt tight. Heavy.

A woman approached slowly, eyes soft as she looked at Akari's pale face.

"Are you hurt?" she said gently.

Akari shook her head.

Another villager stepped forward and knelt beside the children, pulling them into a protective embrace. "She saved them," he said quietly.

More eyes turned to Akari.

Grateful.

Awed.

She couldn't meet them.

Her vision blurred.

A hand rested on her arm.

"Come," the woman said. "Let's get you inside."

Akari let herself be guided away.

The inn room was small.

Too quiet.

Akari sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the floor.

She could still see it.

The moment her blade passed through flesh.

The sound.

The sudden stillness afterward.

Her breathing hitched.

"I… had to," she whispered to the empty room.

The words didn't comfort her.

She scrubbed her hands together, as if she could wash the memory away.

Her swords rested against the wall.

She couldn't bring herself to look at them.

Hours passed.

Sleep never came.

light seeped through the window.

Birds began to sing.

The world moved on.

Akari stood slowly, exhaustion weighing down her limbs. She packed her things.

When she stepped outside, the village was already awake.

The elder bowed deeply.

"You saved us," he said. "We'll never forget that."

Akari bowed back, quick, shallow.

"I hope," she said softly, "that you won't need someone like me again."

She turned toward the road.

The kingdom waited.

And with it.

Everything she had become.

As the sun rose behind her, Akari walked home alone.
