Chapter 139 - A Mark in the Dark

Three days had passed since the mall incident. Han Yi stopped the car in front of an old medical records building and looked through the windshield for a moment. The walls were faded, and dust covered most of the windows. He pushed his glasses up and reached for the thin file on the passenger seat. Qin Yue got out from the other side and shut the door with her hip. She looked up at the building, then at Han Yi. "Did you call Suo Ran?" she asked.Han Yi gave her a brief look. "Not everything needs to be reported to him." Qin Yue gave him a side-eye but didn't argue. Han Yi tucked the file under his arm and started toward the entrance.Qin Yue puts her hands into her pockets and followed him. "You're getting good at keeping secrets."she said. Han Yi glanced back at her. "I'm learning." She smiled. "That's what worries me."They reached the door and walked inside.

Han Yi looked down at the dusty floor before walking forward. Qin Yue followed beside him, glancing at the closed doors along the hallway.Han Yi checked the room numbers as they passed each door. "Storage room seven!"he said when he reached the end of the hall. Qin Yue looked at the door. It was slightly open. She pushed it wider and stepped inside. The room was dark, and weak light came through the dusty windows. Old boxes covered most of the shelves. Qin Yue walked farther inside and stopped at the back. She looked over the shelves, then ran her finger across one of them. Her fingertip came away covered in dust. "Someone moved these." Han Yi came over and looked at the shelf. One space was empty, and the dust below it had been disturbed. He crouched and ran his fingers over the marks on the floor.Qin Yue looked around the room. "Then they were looking for something." Han Yi stood and pushed his glasses up. "Or hiding something."

Han Yi moved along the shelf, checking the faded labels one by one. Qin Yue stayed a few steps away, watching the room instead of the shelves. She leaned against the edge of another shelf and folded her arms. "You were very sure this place was worth checking."she said. Han Yi pulled out one file, checked the label, and put it back. "I was." He reached for another file and flipped through the pages without much interest. "And now?" Qin Yue asked.

Han Yi slid the file back into place. "Now I'm wondering why I brought you." Qin Yue raised an eyebrow and pushed herself away from the shelf. "Because you know I notice things you don't." Han Yi glanced at her over the top of his glasses. "You mean things I don't want to notice." Qin Yue stepped closer and pointed toward the shelf behind him. "Like that." Han Yi turned his head. "What?"She walked past him and tapped the label with one finger. "You just didn't see it."Han Yi gave her a quiet look before checking the label again. "Sometimes those are the important ones."

Qin Yue nodded. Han Yi looked at her for a moment, but this time he didn't reply. He moved his hand farther along the shelf and pulled out a thick brown file.He opened it and looked at the first page. His fingers stopped. Qin Yue noticed and stepped closer. "What?" Han Yi pushed his glasses up and looked at the number printed near the top of the page.Qin Yue leaned over his shoulder. The same patient number from the earlier investigation was printed there. Her expression changed. "That's it." Han Yi nodded slowly. He turned the page. "It's the transfer record." Qin Yue took the file from him and looked at the date. "The one that was moved?" "Yes." She ran her finger along the date, then turned another page. "This doesn't match." Han Yi reached for the file. "What?" "The record says it was transferred, but the next page should explain where." She flipped another page. Then another. Her eyes narrowed. "It's missing."

Han Yi took the file back and checked the pages himself. He counted them with his thumb, stopping when he reached the middle. "Two pages." Qin Yue stepped closer. He turned the file sideways and checked the binding. "They weren't torn out." Qin Yue looked at him. "It's removed without being noticed." Han Yi nodded. He ran his thumb along the edge of the missing pages, then closed the file halfway. Qin Yue looked toward the shelf. "So whoever came here knew what they wanted." Han Yi's eyes stayed on the file for a moment before he looked up. "That's what it looks like."

Then heard sound came from the next room. Both of them stopped at once. They heard something scraped lightly against the floor, then everything went quiet.Han Yi lowered the file and quickly pulled out his gun.His eyes stayed on the door as he reached for Qin Yue's hand and moved closer.Qin Yue looked at their hands, then at him with a confused frown."Why are you holding my hand? I can handle myself."Han Yi glanced at her and raised one finger to his lips.Qin Yue opened her mouth to argue, but stopped when she saw his expression. She gave him an annoyed look and followed quietly.Han Yi tightened his grip for a moment, then let go when they reached the door.He pushed his glasses up,kept his gun raised, and carefully opened the door.

The room was empty. One chair was pushed against the wall, and the window was open. Qin Yue stepped inside and looked behind the door while Han Yi checked the window. But there was nothing. She walked farther into the room and stopped beside a small table. There was ashtray with a cigarette still burning and smoke rose slowly from it.Qin Yue stared at it for a second before looking at Han Yi."Someone was here."Han Yi stepped closer and looked at the cigarette. He didn't touch it.His eyes moved around the room, then back to the open window.

Qin Yue glanced toward the hallway. The door was still open behind them."We didn't hear anyone leave."Han Yi looked at her briefly, then at the cigarette again.Qin Yue reached toward the ashtray, but stopped before touching it."It's still warm."Han Yi's expression tightened. He turned toward the doorway and raised his gun again.Qin Yue noticed and stopped moving."What?"He didn't answer then suddenly faint sound came from somewhere farther down the hallway. Both of them went still. They waited for another sound, but nothing came.Han Yi lowered his gun slightly and stepped into the hallway.

Qin Yue followed close behind. They looked toward the end of the hall, but it was empty. Han Yi walked a few steps forward, then stopped beside the stairs. He looked down first, then up toward the floor above."There's Nothing."Qin Yue said quietly.Han Yi didn't reply. He looked at the old walls and the closed doors around them before putting his gun away."Let's finish checking the room." Qin Yue glanced back at the open doorway. "Someone was here less than a minute ago.""Han Yi turned and walked back inside. She followed him, still looking toward the hallway behind them. They searched the room again, but found nothing else.Han Yi picked up the file from the table and closed it."We should go."Qin Yue nodded, but before leaving, she looked once more at the cigarette."Whoever was here didn't even finish it."Han Yi glanced at the ashtray."They left in a hurry."They walked out together and pulled the door shut behind them.

Cai Lang sat alone in his apartment.A few bottles of wine and some food were spread across the table. He held several old photographs in one hand, looking through them slowly. He stopped at one picture and stared at it for a moment before reaching for his phone. He called Zheng Rui.When the call connected,he didn't explain much.He only gave him an old address and told him to meet him there. Then he ended the call and looked down at the photographs again.

Zheng Rui arrived a little later and found Cai Lang waiting beside his car.Cai Lang wore a dark coat with the collar slightly raised, and his hands were in his pockets. His face was calm, but he looked more serious than usual.Zheng Rui got out of his car and looked at him."What happened?!You sounded serious on the phone."Cai Lang glanced at him."I need you to help me check a place."Zheng Rui looked at the old building across the street. The paint had peeled from the walls, and several windows were covered with boards.

Cai Lang glanced at it once, then crossed the street without saying anything.Zheng Rui quickly followed him."You could at least tell me what we're looking for."Cai Lang pushed his hands deeper into his coat pockets. "You'll know when we find it."They walked around the side of the building until they reached door half hidden behind a broken wooden board.Cai Lang moved the board aside and tried the handle. The door opened. Zheng Rui looked at him."That was easy." Cai Lang glanced at the lock then stepped inside.

The hallway was dark.Cai Lang took out his phone and turned on the light. He moved slowly, his eyes checking the walls and doors as he walked.Zheng Rui followed behind him, trying not to step on the broken pieces of wood scattered across the floor.Cai Lang suddenly stopped.Zheng Rui almost walked into him."What?"Cai Lang lifted a hand without looking back and pointed toward the wall.A faded photograph was partly visible behind a loose piece of paper.Cai Lang pulled it free and looked at it.His expression changed slightly when he realised that was same building that where Lu Cheng had taken photographs here before. Cai Lang folded the paper back into place and kept walking.

Above the entrance,a small security camera was fixed to the wall.Zheng Rui looked up and stopped."That camera is still here?"Cai Lang followed his gaze and saw tiny red light was blinking near the lens.Zheng Rui stepped closer and squinted at it."I thought these were disconnected years ago."Cai Lang reached up and touched the cable with two fingers. It was not covered in dust.He lowered his hand and looked at the red light."Someone connected it again."Zheng Rui's smile disappeared."Recently?"Cai Lang looked at the cable once more."It looks that way."He turned and continued down the hallway.Zheng Rui followed him.

They climbed to the second floor. The stairs creaked as they went up,and dust fell from the railing when Zheng Rui grabbed it.Cai Lang reached the top first and walked down the narrow hallway.A locked door stood at the end.He stopped in front of it and looked at the lock. There were scratches around the keyhole.Cai Lang crouched and ran his thumb over one of them. The scratch was clear against the dusty metal. "Someone tried to open it."he said quietly.Zheng Rui leaned closer."Maybe they lost the key."Cai Lang looked at him."Then why are the scratches on the outside?"Zheng Rui paused and looked at the lock again. "Right."He straightened and coughed."Bad joke."Cai Lang stood up and looked at the door again.

Cai Lang stepped closer to the door and gripped the handle. He pulled once, but the lock didn't move.He let go,rolled his shoulder, and looked at the damaged wood around the frame."Stay back."Zheng Rui took a step away.Cai Lang stepped back once and drove his shoulder into the door. The old lock made a sharp crack, but the door stayed shut.Cai Lang took off his coat and handed it to Zheng Rui."Hold this." Zheng Rui took it and looked at him.Cai Lang stepped back again and hit the door with more force. This time, the lock broke and the door swung open.Cai Lang glanced back at him."We don't have time.Hurry up."Zheng Rui looked at the broken lock, then at the coat in his hands."Taking off your coat was really necessary?"Cai Lang gave him a brief look and turned back toward the room. "Come on."Zheng Rui sighed and followed him inside.

The room was dark and dusty. There were a few old boxes in the corners and a broken sofa near the wall.Cai Lang stepped inside and looked around while Zheng Rui checked the other side of the room.Cai Lang moved toward the table and lifted a few loose papers, then checked the drawers one by one.He pushed a box aside with his foot and looked behind it.Nothing."Cai Lang."Zheng Rui's voice made him stop.He turned and saw Zheng Rui standing near the wall.Zheng Rui had pulled a piece of cloth away from something."Come here."Cai Lang walked over and stopped beside him.

Zheng Rui looked at the wall, then at him. There were several photographs hidden behind the cloth. His eyes widened when he saw one of them."Why is his photo here?" He pointed at the picture of Lian Ziho. "What's happening?"Cai Lang reached up and took the photograph from the wall.He looked at it silently.Lian Ziho was leaving the university. The date on the back showed it had been taken three days ago.Cai Lang's fingers tightened around the photo.

Zheng Rui stepped closer."What are you hiding?" Cai Lang looked at him but didn't answer. "What's the connection between him and Lu Cheng?"Zheng Rui's voice rose slightly. "Why is someone taking pictures of him?"Cai Lang looked back at the photograph for a moment, then slipped it into his pocket."I don't have an answer for your questions." Zheng Rui stared at him."You know something."Cai Lang didn't reply. He reached for the other photographs on the wall and pulled them down one by one, folding them before putting them into his coat pocket.

Zheng Rui watched him,his expression becoming more serious."That's it? You're just going to take them and leave?"Cai Lang turned toward the door."We're leaving." Zheng Rui followed him a few steps."You can't always leave things like this."Cai Lang stopped but didn't turn around.Zheng Rui looked at his back."You know Lian Ziho is in danger."Cai Lang's hand tightened inside his pocket. He stood there for a moment before leaving.

Meanwhile at suo ran home,Jun Wei stood in the middle of the living room with a small toy sword in his hand.He had been practicing his annual day performance for almost half an hour, but somehow he kept turning it into a game.Suo Ran sat on the sofa with his arms crossed, watching him. "Ready?"Suo Ran asked.Jun Wei nodded seriously."This time,I won't forget."He raised the toy sword and took a dramatic step forward."You have entered my territory. Now you must answer for what you have done!" He pointed the sword toward an empty chair and waited for a second."Then I say..."He looked down at the paper in his other hand."I say..."His eyebrows pulled together."What do I say?"Suo Ran looked at the paper."You forgot."

Jun Wei lowered the sword."I didn't forget.I just wanted to check if you were paying attention."Suo Ran gave him a look."Ohh! That was nice excuse."Jun Wei quickly looked back at the paper and tried again. "You have entered my territory. Now you must answer for what you have done!"He swung the toy sword through the air and almost hit the lamp.Jun Wei stopped immediately and looked at it."Oops." Suo Ran reached over and moved the lamp farther away."Maybe don't fight the furniture."Jun Wei nodded."The furniture is innocent."He raised the sword again."Then you have nowhere to run!"He jumped onto the edge of the carpet and pointed the sword at Suo Ran."Ge-ge,you are the enemy now."

Suo Ran looked at him."I'm not part of your play."Jun Wei walked closer."You are now." Suo ran run towards sofa."I didn't agree." "Too late."Jun Wei lightly tapped his shoulder with the toy sword."You're captured."Suo Ran caught the sword before he could pull it away."Am I?"Jun Wei tried to pull it back, but Suo Ran held it just out of reach.Jun Wei leaned forward and reached for it with both hands."Give it back."

Suo Ran watched him struggle for a moment before letting go.Jun Wei stumbled back one step with the sword and quickly straightened himself as if nothing had happened. He lifted it again and took a serious pose."You can't escape."He tried to take another step, but the edge of his scarf caught under his shoe. He looked down, freed it quickly, and continued as if nothing had happened.Suo Ran turned his face away to hide a smile. Jun Wei noticed and pointed the sword at him."Don't laugh."Suo Ran looked back at him."I'm not."

Jun Wei narrowed his eyes, then turned back toward the sofa.He moved around it with the toy sword raised, then suddenly appeared from the other side and stopped in front of Suo Ran."I got you."He tried to continue his line, but his expression slowly changed."I forgot."Suo Ran reached for the paper and handed it to him.Jun Wei read the line quietly, then put the paper back on the table."I remember now."He took a breath and tried again. This time,he said the line correctly. He even added a small turn at the end,but his foot caught the edge of the carpet and he stumbled.

Jun Wei quickly steadied himself and looked at Suo Ran. "That was part of it."Suo Ran nodded seriously."I didn't say anything."Jun Wei smiled and picked up a cushion, holding it in front of himself like a shield. He moved behind the sofa, then suddenly jumped out and raised the sword again."Got you!"Suo Ran caught the sword with one hand.Jun Wei stared at him for a second before laughing. He pulled the sword back and stood straight again."Again."he said after catching his breath. He picked up the sword and stood straight, ready to start the scene one more time.Suo Ran quietly smiled as he watched him."This time, try not to fall."Jun Wei nodded seriously."I won't."He took one step forward, then looked down at his feet before taking the next one.Suo Ran shook his head with a small smile.Jun Wei noticed but didn't stop.He turned toward the wall and took a deep breath, ready to practice his lines again.

Then Jun Wei suddenly stopped. His eyes widened when he noticed something near the wall."Ge-ge..."he called softly.Suo Ran looked up."What?"Jun Wei pointed toward the floor without taking his eyes off it.A small black object was under the sofa.He crouched slightly to get a better look, then quickly stood again and looked at Suo Ran. "What is that?"Suo Ran walked over and picked it up.

Jun Wei followed closely, nearly stepping on Suo Ran's heel.He watched as Suo Ran turned the object between his fingers.Jun Wei's curiosity grew."Can I see?"He reached for it,but Suo Ran moved his hand away for a moment. There was a tiny mark on the side of the object.Suo Ran's expression changed.Jun Wei noticed immediately and stopped smiling."Why are you looking like that?"Suo Ran didn't answer. He wiped the dust from the object with his thumb and stared at the mark.

Jun Wei leaned closer."Is it something bad?" Suo Ran looked at him."I don't know."Jun Wei's eyes moved from the object to the hallway. He lowered his voice."Did someone come inside?"Suo Ran glanced toward the closed front door.Jun Wei immediately moved a little closer to him and caught the edge of his sleeve."Ge-ge?"Suo Ran looked down at his hand."It's nothing."He closed his fingers around the object and slipped it into his pocket.Jun Wei frowned."But you said that when something is nothing, you don't look like that."Suo Ran paused for a second.Jun Wei looked up at him, waiting for an answer.

Suo Ran gently patted his head. "Finish your practice first."Jun Wei looked toward the toy sword still lying on the floor, then back at Suo Ran. "Now?"Jun Wei picked up the sword, but he kept glancing at Suo Ran as he walked back to his place.Suo Ran watched him for a moment before looking toward the hallway again. He took out his phone and quickly tapped a number, but stopped when he saw the time.It was already late.He stared at the screen for a second, then locked it and slipped the phone back into his pocket. He walked straight to the front door and checked the lock.He pulled the handle once, then again to make sure it was secure. He moved to the windows next, checking each one carefully and pushing the locks down. His eyes stayed on the glass for a moment before he pulled the curtains closed.

Suo Ran stood still in the middle of the room. His hand returned to the object in his pocket.Who put this here?...His fingers tightened around it.And what do they want?... Suo Ran's eyes moved back to the locked door.Someone had been close enough to leave this here...And I didn't notice...
