Chapter 37 - A Place Meant for Hiding

Dawn seeped through the cracked blinds of the safehouse in thin, colorless lines, casting pale streaks across walls that smelled of dust and metal, a place never meant for living only for hiding and Suo ran sat unmoving, his back against the cold surface as Jun wei shifted in his arms, mumbling faintly about "mission rewards." his small fingers tightening instinctively around the wooden fox keychain as if it were the only steady thing left in his world.

Suo ran's hand moved almost unconsciously, smoothing the boy's hair back with a gentleness that didn't match the tension in his body, his voice barely above a whisper as he said, "You're safe." though the quiet uncertainty in his tone made it unclear whether he was trying to comfort the child or himself.

Across the room, Lian ziho stood by the window, watching the empty street through a narrow gap in the curtain, his posture still but alert, and after a long moment he spoke without turning, his voice calm but edged with concern, "You've been awake since we arrived." Suo ran didn't answer, his gaze fixed downward, but Lian ziho continued anyway, "You can't function like this." and Suo ran's reply came quietly, almost stubbornly, "I can… I don't get to stop."

That made Lian ziho's gaze flick toward him, something sharper surfacing beneath his usual composure as he said, "That's not strength." and Suo ran's jaw tightened, the words landing deeper than he wanted to admit as he asked, "Then what is?" Lian ziho didn't hesitate this time, his voice lower, more direct, "Knowing when you're breaking." and the silence that followed felt heavier than before, stretched thin between them.

Jun wei stirred again in suo ran's arms, pressing closer without waking, seeking warmth and safety even in sleep, and Lian ziho's eyes lingered on that small movement before his voice softened slightly as he added, "You almost fell on the ladder last night." Suo ran's response came immediately,"I didn't." but Lian's expression didn't change as he said quietly, "You almost did." That made Suo ran finally look up, his eyes rimmed red from exhaustion, something raw and unguarded flickering beneath the surface as he said, voice tight with truth he couldn't soften, "If I fall… I don't get a second try." and Lian ziho held his gaze for a long moment, steady and unyielding, before replying, "You're not the only one carrying him."

Suo ran's eyes dropped back to Jun wei, his arms tightening just slightly around the boy as he said, "I know." but the quiet, fragile way he said it carried a different truth entirely one that said he didn't really believe it.

The door opened softly, a sliver of cold air slipping into the room before Cai Lang stepped inside, and Lian ziho's eyes dropped instantly to the dried blood at his cuff as he said sharply, "Report." while Cai lang replied without hesitation, "Two surveillance tails. Removed." and Suo ran stiffened at once, his voice low but tense as he repeated, "Removed?" to which Cai lang answered evenly, "They won't be reporting back." Jun wei shifted slightly at the change in tone, sensing it even in half-sleep, and Cai lang lowered his voice a fraction as he added, "They've pulled back… for now." and Lian ziho echoed grimly, "For now."

Cai Lang's gaze then moved directly to suo ran, steady and unreadable, as he said, "You should sleep." and Suo ran immediately shot back, sharper than he intended, "You should stop leaving." making the air tighten between them, though Cai lang didn't react outwardly only something faint flickered in his eyes as he replied, "If I don't leave, we lose initiative." and Suo ran pressed harder, frustration breaking through exhaustion, "You don't even tell us where you're going." to which Cai kang answered flatly, "You don't need to know." and Suo ran's voice rose just slightly, "I do if it affects him." The word him hung in the air like a weight, and Jun Wei stirred at the sound, opening his eyes sleepily as he murmured, "Gege…?" and Suo Ran's expression softened instantly, his voice dropping into something gentle, "I'm here,"

while Jun wei blinked toward Cai Lang and asked innocently, "Did we win?" Cai lang crouched down immediately so they were eye level, his tone steady and calm as he said, "Yes. You cleared the level " and Jun wei smiled faintly, reassured as he said, "Told you I'm good at missions." to which Cai lang replied with a rare softness, "You're the best on the team."

The boy nodded once, satisfied, and drifted back toward sleep, but when Cai lang stood again, his expression had already shifted back into something more guarded, and Lian ziho noticed it instantly as he said, "You found something," and Cai lang didn't respond immediately, his gaze moving instead to suo ran as he said, "You opened more than you think."

Suo ran went still at that, his voice barely above a whisper as he asked, "The envelope?" and Cai lang nodded once, confirming it, making suo ran's stomach drop as he asked, "What about it?" Cai lang exhaled slowly, tension visible in the set of his jaw, and said, "It triggered a contingency file " and Suo Ran's breath faltered as he repeated, "Contingency for what?" and Cai lang answered without looking away, "For you."

Silence swallowed the room immediately, heavy and suffocating, and Lian ziho's voice cut through it, sharper now as he demanded, "Explain." while Cai Lang finally met Suo ran's eyes directly and said, "There's a directive attached to your name," making Suo Ran swallow hard as he asked, voice unsteady, "What kind of directive?" and Cai lang didn't blink as he answered, "Observation escalated to containment." A pause hung there before he continued, quieter but heavier, "Then termination. Conditional." The words hit like impact, and Jun wei shifted faintly in his sleep, unaware of the way the room had just changed, while Suo Ran's voice barely came out as he whispered, "Conditional on what?" and Cai lang replied without hesitation, "Non-cooperation… or dissemination of recovered documents," and Suo Ran's breath trembled as he said, "Recovered… you mean the envelope." and Cai Lang confirmed, "Yes."

Lian ziho stepped closer immediately, his tone tight and urgent as he asked, "Your father signed this?" and Cai lang's jaw clenched before he answered carefully, "It's under his clearance " and Lian ziho pressed further, "Which means?" and Cai lang finally said, his voice controlled but heavy, "It means… either he authorized it… or someone used his authority."

Suo ran's hands began to shake as the words settled into him, his voice barely a whisper when he said, "So I was never just being watched… I was being measured." and Cai lang answered without hesitation, "Yes," making the room feel colder instantly. Suo ran's breath hitched as he forced out, "For elimination," and the silence that followed wasn't empty it was suffocating.

Jun wei's soft breathing filled the gaps between them, steady and unaware, while Suo ran let out a small, broken laugh that held no humor at all as he said, "I thought this was about a scroll," and Cai lang replied evenly,"It was. At first." which made suo ran's head snap up slightly as he asked, "And now?" Cai lang's voice stayed controlled, almost clinical, "Now it's about what you know," and Suo ran's frustration cracked through as he said, "I don't even understand what I know," to which Cai lang answered quietly, "That doesn't matter to them."

Later, as mid-morning light filtered through the room and Jun wei sat nearby working on puzzle pieces, humming faintly to himself, the tension at the table grew heavier until Lian ziho spoke carefully, "We can't keep him here," and Suo Ran's head snapped up immediately as he said sharply, "We're not sending him away," and Lian ziho corrected him calmly, "That's not what I said." but Suo ran insisted, "It's what you mean." his voice tight with fear.

Lian Ziho didn't react to the edge, only replied evenly, "If they escalate to termination protocols, proximity becomes risk." and Suo ran shot back instantly, "He's safer with me," while Lian countered, "Emotionally, yes. Strategically, no." and Suo ran's voice rose as he said, "Stop talking about him like a chess piece." making Jun wei look up from his puzzle and ask innocently, "Are we playing chess?"

The three men froze at once, the tension snapping into silence before Cai lang crouched down beside the boy and said gently, "No.We're not." while Jun wei frowned at the puzzle and said, "This piece doesn't fit." prompting Lian ziho to take it carefully and say, his eyes flicking briefly toward Suo ran, "Sometimes pieces look right… but they belong somewhere else." Suo ran stared at him, voice firm again but strained, "I'm not moving him," and Cai lang responded this time, "He won't go alone." making the room still.

Suo Ran looked at him sharply, "What?" and Cai lang clarified evenly, "If relocation becomes necessary, he doesn't go alone." while Lian Ziho understood immediately and said quietly, "You're offering yourself." and Cai Lang corrected without emotion, "I'm correcting risk variables." Suo ran's voice broke slightly as he said, "You'd leave the network exposed." and Cai Lang met his gaze steadily, "I'd leave it intact." and when Suo Ran pressed, "That's not what I asked." silence followed.

Jun Wei tugged on Suo Ran's sleeve then and asked softly, "Gege, are you mad?" and Suo Ran's expression softened instantly as he pulled him close and said, "No… never at you." while Jun Wei studied him carefully and asked, "Then why do your eyes look like that?" and Suo Ran couldn't answer. Lian Ziho stepped in gently, saying, "Because grown-up missions are harder." and Jun Wei considered it seriously before saying, "Then I'll level up faster " making the three adults exchange a look none of them could name.

Later, as afternoon light turned gold and Jun Wei slept again, Cai Lang stood near the door preparing to leave, but Suo Ran stopped him, asking quietly, "If it was your father… would you choose him?" and the question hung in the air until Cai Lang finally said, "My father built a system. I choose truth over systems." and when Suo Ran said, "That's not what I asked."

Cai Lang stepped closer and replied, "If he authorized termination, he already chose." making Suo Ran's breath falter. "And if he didn't?" Suo Ran asked, and Cai Lang answered, "Then someone wants us to believe he did." explaining further, "Because division is efficient," while Lian Ziho added quietly, "If we distrust each other, they don't have to chase us." and Suo Ran looked between them, whispering, "You're both still here," to which Lian replied softly, "For now."

Cai Lang's final warning came low and steady, "Don't open the door for anyone." and it carried weight that no one missed. Night came too quietly after that, headlights appearing outside one by one until Lian stiffened and said, "They came faster this time." and Cai Lang checked his phone, finding no signal, prompting Lian to mutter, "That's not good." as boots approached the pavement in measured rhythm.

Jun Wei shifted in his sleep and Suo Ran brushed his hair gently, whispering, "If something happens, you take him." to Lian Ziho, but Lian immediately replied, "I'm not leaving you," and Suo Ran corrected him, "That's not what I said." just as Cai Lang stepped closer and said firmly, "No one splits unless I say so," meeting Suo Ran's eyes when he asked, "And if you're wrong?" Cai Lang answered without hesitation, "I won't be."

Then came the knock slow, certain, unavoidable and from the other side of the door a voice spoke calmly, "We know you're inside." and no one moved as Cai Lang whispered, almost inaudible, "They know."
