Chapter 26 - Leaning not choosing

The rooftop was quiet. The city below hummed faintly, lights blinking like distant stars scattered across the night.Lian Ziho stood near the railing, hands in his pockets, staring down at the endless movement below when the door behind him creaked open. "Suo Ran?" he said, surprised, turning slightly.

Suo Ran stepped out slowly. He looked exhausted in a way that wasn't just physical like something had been pulled too tightly inside him for too long."Did I interrupt?" Suo Ran asked quietly.Lian Ziho shook his head immediately. "No. I was just… thinking."

Suo Ran walked closer, stopping beside him. For a while, neither of them spoke. The wind moved lightly between them, carrying distant city sounds that didn't quite reach their space. Then Lian Ziho sighed."Things feel messy lately." he said.

Suo Ran gave a faint, tired smile without looking at him. "That's one way to say it."

They leaned against the railing side by side, close enough to feel each other's presence but not touching, both of them staring outward instead of at each other."Cai Lang okay?" Lian Ziho asked after a moment.

Suo Ran hesitated."Physically… yes." he said finally. Lian ziho watched him for second and asked "And the rest?"

Suo Ran's eyes dropped slightly. He looked away, watching the traffic far below like it had answers he didn't. "I don't know where I stand anymore."Lian Ziho studied him quietly for a moment, expression softening just slightly."You don't have to stand anywhere." he said. "Just… be."Suo Ran let out a small, tired laugh. "You always make it sound simple." "That's how life works." Lian Ziho said lightly, but there was something gentler underneath it this time.Suo Ran didn't respond.

Lian Ziho noticed it first the way Suo Ran's voice had started to slow, how his words had begun to soften at the edges, breaking slightly between breaths. He was still talking, still present, but something in him was slipping toward exhaustion.Lian Ziho was about to say something else when he felt it.

A shift a gentle weight.Suo Ran's head tilted slowly, then came to rest against his shoulder.Lian Ziho froze completely. His breath caught slightly as his entire body went still, like even moving might break something fragile."Suo Ran?" he said quietly, unsure if he should move at all. There was no answer.

Only soft, even breathing.Lian Ziho didn't push him away.

He could feel it Suo ran's warmth through the thin fabric, the soft rise and fall of his breathing. "He's asleep." Lian ziho swallowed. His first instinct was to move. To shift his shoulder. To wake him gently and tell him to go inside. But his body didn't listen.

Instead, his hand curled slightly against his thigh, fingers tightening as if grounding himself. This is bad, he thought.

Lian Ziho glanced down at him. Suo Ran's lashes rested softly against his cheeks, his expression peaceful in a way Lian Ziho rarely saw no fear, no tension, just quiet trust.

Lian Ziho's jaw clenched.

Friends don't feel like this, he told himself firmly.

(...)

Friends don't notice the warmth of someone's breath this closely.

(....)

Friends don't adjust without thinking just so the other person sleeps better.

(...)

And yet, slowly, carefully, he shifted just enough to steady Suo Ran's head, making sure it wouldn't slip.He hated himself for it.

He stared straight ahead after that, eyes fixed on the dark sky, refusing to look down again, heart beating louder than it should. He's just tired, Lian Ziho repeated in his mind. But when Suo Ran leaned just a fraction closer, his weight settling more naturally against him and Lian Ziho didn't move awayThat was the moment he knew something was changing. And he wasn't ready to name it.

The rooftop door creaked open.Cai Lang stepped out, the cool night air brushing faintly against his face. He hadn't planned to come up here his feet had simply carried him without asking. He stopped. Not far from the railing, under the dim rooftop light, Suo Ran was asleep. His head tilted slightly resting on Lian Ziho's shoulder.Lian Ziho sat still, almost unnaturally so, like even breathing too loudly might disturb him. One arm rested loosely on his knee, the other close but not touching. His gaze was lowered, quiet, careful, almost… protective.

Cai Lang's breath caught. For a moment, his mind refused to process what he was seeing.

They looked…comfortable. The wind lifted a strand of Suo Ran's hair, brushing it lightly against Lian Ziho's collar. Suo Ran shifted unconsciously, leaning in just a little more.

Lian Ziho didn't pull away.Something sharp twisted in Cai Lang's chest.

He stood there longer than he should have, watching something he had no right to interrupt."Why this..." he murmured under his breath, though no one could hear it.Then, silently he turned around. The rooftop door closed behind him with a soft click. He told himself it didn't matter.Suo Ran was tired.

Lian Ziho was his friend. There was nothing wrong with that."It's nothing." Cai Lang muttered quietly as he walked away.Yet his chest felt tight in a way he didn't want to understand.

Back on the rooftop, Suo Ran stirred, the faint chill of night air brushing against his face pulling him slowly awake. For a second, he didn't know where he was. His head felt heavy, his body warm in a way that didn't make sense. Then he shifted slightly and realized his cheek was resting against someone's shoulder."Lian Ziho?"

Suo Ran stiffened immediately, pulling back a little too quickly. "Oh sorry." he said, voice rough with sleep and embarrassment. "I didn't mean to "Lian Ziho let out a quiet chuckle, shaking his head slightly. "It's fine. You were exhausted. I didn't want to wake you."Suo Ran rubbed his eyes, avoiding his gaze. "How long was I asleep?" "Not long." Lian Ziho replied easily. He hesitated for a moment, then asked more softly, "You okay?" Suo Ran forced a small smile, though it didn't quite reach his eyes. "Yeah. Just… didn't realize I'd fall asleep like that."

Lian Ziho nodded, but his eyes lingered on him for a second longer than necessary.

They sat there in silence for a few seconds.

"These days," Lian Ziho said slowly, voice quieter now, "things feel… complicated."

Suo Ran didn't deny it. "Yeah." he said under his breath.

Across the building, Cai Lang returned to his apartment and shut the door behind him.

The lights were off.The space felt colder than it should. He leaned back against the door, closing his eyes, exhaling slowly through clenched teeth."You're being ridiculous." he muttered to himself. He told himself it didn't matter. That Suo Ran didn't belong to him.

That Lian Ziho hadn't done anything wrong.

But his mind didn't listen.Suo Ran's face soft with sleep. The way he had leaned in so naturally. How right it had looked.Cai Lang dragged a hand down his face. "Get a grip." he said quietly, sharper this time but the image didn't leave.

Downstairs, Suo Ran returned home later than usual. The apartment was quiet. He slowed slightly when he reached Cai Lang's door, his steps hesitating without meaning to. He glanced at it the stillness, the darkness, no light beneath it, no sound." Already asleep?" he murmured faintly. For a moment, he just stood there. Then he looked away.

"Right." he said quietly to himself, almost like a reminder.

He turned and walked back to his own apartment. But he didn't understand why that small, simple thing that closed door, that silence left something in his chest feeling unexpectedly… hollow.

The next morning arrived quietly.Suo Ran woke up earlier than usual, a restless energy sitting heavy in his chest. He moved around the kitchen without purpose, washing cups that were already clean, drying them slowly just to keep his hands busy. His phone lit up once or twice, but he only glanced at it without really reading anything, mind elsewhere.

When he finally heard a door open, his heart jumped before his thoughts could catch up.

Cai Lang stepped out of his apartment.Their eyes met neither of them spoke at first.

"Morning." Suo Ran said finally, though even to himself his voice sounded careful, like he was stepping around something invisible.

"Morning." Cai Lang replied. There was a pause."I…" Suo Ran began, then stopped, searching for something normal to say. "Are you… feeling okay today?"Cai Lang nodded. "I'm fine."

"Stop." Suo Ran said, stepping forward before thinking it through. "You're not supposed to strain yourself." "I can handle it." Cai Lang replied, tone even but faintly guarded."You literally can't." Suo Ran shot back, reaching out and grabbing his arm gently, but firmly enough to stop him. "At least let me help."Cai Lang froze."Fine." he said quietly.

Suo Ran guided him to sit down, movements careful, a little awkward, like both of them were suddenly too aware of each other. The air between them wasn't angry but it was tense, charged with things neither of them could say out loud."You don't have to stay." Cai Lang said suddenly, his voice quieter now. "I'll recover faster if you don't keep hovering."Suo Ran blinked, taken aback. "Is that what you really think?"Cai Lang didn't answer. He just looked away.

Suo Ran stepped back slowly, something like hurt flickering across his face before he hid it. "I'll go out for a bit." he said, voice more controlled now. "You call if you need anything.""Suo ran " Cai Lang started, but it was too late.Suo Ran had already turned.

And left. The door closed softly behind him.Suo Ran didn't know where he was going. He just walked. His feet carried him upward before he realized it.

At the rooftop suo ran sat down in the same spot where he had fallen asleep the night before, pulling his knees up and wrapping his arms around them, shoulders slightly hunched. The city stretched out below him again, but this time it didn't feel calm.It just felt distant."Why does everything feel so off lately…" he murmured under his breath.

His voice was quiet, almost swallowed by the wind."Why does he feel so far away…?"

He pressed his forehead against his knees, eyes closing. "And why does Lian Ziho…" he hesitated, exhaling slowly. "…feel easy and confusing at the same time?" His fingers tightened slightly against his sleeves.

"I'm tired." he whispered, barely audible.

Back downstairs, Cai Lang stood alone in his apartment, staring at the door Suo Ran had just walked through. His jaw tightened."This isn't what I wanted." he muttered quietly.

He dragged a hand through his hair, frustration flickering across his expression.

"I don't want distance," he said under his breath. "I don't want this silence."His gaze dropped briefly."And I definitely don't want to see him leaning on someone else like that again…" Then his father's voice echoed in his mind. Stay away from him.

Cai Lang exhaled slowly, closing his eyes for a moment. " I don't know how." he admitted quietly.

The day passed then the light faded.

And night came again just as unresolved.

Three people.One growing distance.

Feelings none of them were ready to face.
