Cai Lang finally stopped running. He cornered Suo Ran in the narrow space between floors, the emergency stairwell dim and echoing. No witnesses. No excuses.
"You keep hiding things from me," Cai Lang said quietly.Suo Ran didn't look up. His breathing was uneven, but his voice came out steady. "And you keep lying."The words hung there.
Cai Lang exhaled slowly, dragging a hand briefly through his hair before letting it fall again. "I'm trying to protect you."
"By deciding everything for me?" Suo Ran shot back, lifting his head now, eyes bright with restrained anger. "By lying to my face?"
Cai Lang stepped closer. "You don't understand what you're involved in." "Then tell me." Suo Ran said immediately, his voice rising for the first time. Frustration cracked through the control he'd been holding onto. "Or stop pretending you care."
Cai Lang's expression flickered just for a second. Something raw slipped through before it was buried again.Silence between them. The stairwell seemed to close in around them, every second stretching too long.Cai Lang's jaw tightened."I can't." he said finally.Suo Ran let out a sharp, disbelieving breath, shaking his head slightly. "Of course you can't." he muttered, bitterness creeping in. "It's always that, isn't it? 'You don't understand.' 'I can't tell you.' You expect me to just accept that?"
Cai Lang didn't answer. Didn't deny it either.
"And if you keep doing this..." Cai Lang continued, voice hardening again as he forced himself back into control, "going behind my back, disappearing into missions I can't control then I'm done."
The words landed like a blow.Suo Ran stilled.
For a moment, he just stared at him, like he hadn't heard correctly. Then Suo Ran looked at him then, eyes sharp. "Done?"
"I won't help you anymore." Cai Lang said coldly. "Whatever happens next… it's not on me."
That was the moment something broke.
"Fine." Suo Ran replied. "I never asked you to save me."They walked away in opposite directions.Lian Ziho didn't notice the fracture.
He only noticed that Suo Ran was suddenly always there sharing meals, walking home together, laughing at stupid things. "You're easy to be around." Lian ziho said one evening. "Ever notice that?"
Suo Ran smiled faintly. "You don't ask too many questions." "Exactly." Lian ziho said.
Suo Ran let out a quiet breath, the faint smile lingering but not quite reaching his eyes. "That's… kind of a relief right now."
Lian Ziho tilted his head slightly, studying him. "Relief," he repeated. "That bad, huh?"
Suo Ran gave a small, humorless huff. "You could say that." His fingers tightened briefly at his side before he forced them to relax. "It's exhausting… being questioned like everything you do is wrong."
Lian Ziho's expression softened just a fraction. "He's not questioning you," he said, voice calmer now. "He's scared."Suo Ran's smile faded."He doesn't get to decide things for me just because he's scared," he replied after a moment, quieter, but firm. "No." Lian Ziho agreed easily. "He doesn't." Then he added, more carefully, "But you don't make it easy either."Suo Ran glanced at him, a flicker of irritation returning. "Whose side are you on?" "Neither." Lian Ziho said without hesitation. "That's why I can say it."
That pulled a small, real reaction out of Suo Ran a faint, reluctant curve at the corner of his lips." You really don't care, do you?"
"I care," Lian Ziho corrected, his tone light but not dismissive. "Just not enough to interfere where I'm not wanted."Suo Ran looked away again, the earlier tension settling back in his shoulders. " I didn't ask him to care that much." Lian Ziho's gaze lingered on him for a second. "That's usually how it works," he said quietly. "No one asks for it." Suo Ran didn't respond.
From a distance, Cai Lang watched. And when he searched deeper old files, encrypted records, shadows tied to the scroll he realized something terrifying.Suo Ran wasn't just hiding information. He was hiding himself.
They met again days later. All three.Neutral ground. Forced politeness.Cai Lang and Suo Ran didn't speak not really. Lian Ziho, blissfully unaware, clapped his hands together and declared, "This is depressing. We're playing Truth or Dare." Cai Lang shut it down immediately with a flat "No." but Lian ziho only grinned, already pouring drinks as if the refusal meant nothing. Cai Lang ignored him completely.
Then Lian ziho paused mid-motion, glanced around, and said, "Wait." Reaching across the table, he grabbed an empty bottle and set it between them with a soft clink. "There we go. Now it's official." Suo Ran glanced at the bottle, then back at him, faint disbelief in his voice. " You're serious?" "Very," Lian replied brightly. "Spin decides. No bias. No escaping." Cai Lang didn't even spare the bottle a look.
"First round," Lian ziho announced, spinning it. The bottle whirled, scraping lightly against the table before slowing and finally stopping pointing directly at Lian himself. A brief silence followed before Suo Ran let out a small, unexpected breath of amusement. "That's fair." Lian ziho stared at the bottle like it had personally betrayed him. "Traitor." Cai Lang leaned back slightly, arms crossing for the first time, and said flatly, "Truth or dare?" Lian ziho narrowed his eyes. "You're enjoying this." "Answer," Cai Lang replied without interest.
Lian ziho sighed dramatically and waved a hand. "Fine. Truth." Suo Ran hesitated, then asked quietly, "Why do you act like nothing bothers you?" Lian ziho blinked, and for just a second, the usual ease slipped. Then the smile came back, light and effortless. "Because most things don't matter enough to." Cai Lang's gaze sharpened slightly, like he didn't quite believe that, but he said nothing.
"Next." Lian ziho said quickly, spinning again. This time the bottle slowed more gradually before stopping on Suo Ran. Lian ziho's grin returned instantly. "Perfect." Suo Ran tensed. " Truth." "No fun." Lian ziho muttered, leaning forward anyway. "Alright… what's something you're hiding right now?" Suo Ran went still. The question hit too close. His gaze dropped briefly before he answered, careful and controlled, "Nothing important." Cai Lang's eyes lifted sharply. He didn't speak, but he heard it.
Lian ziho hummed, unconvinced. "That sounded like a lie." "It's not," Suo Ran replied too quickly. "Sure," Lian ziho dragged out, but let it go. "Your turn."Suo Ran spun the bottle. It turned once, then twice, slowing until it finally stopped pointing directly at Cai Lang. Silence settled immediately, heavy and expectant. Lian ziho leaned back, watching openly now. "Well, well." Suo Ran hesitated for a moment, fingers tightening slightly against the edge of the table before he asked quietly, " Truth or dare?" Cai Lang didn't break eye contact. "Truth." Suo Ran could ask anything anything at all and the air shifted with the weight of it. " Why didn't you tell me the truth?" he asked at last, without hesitation.
Cai Lang went still. Lian ziho's expression lost its playfulness completely. Cai Lang's gaze didn't move from Suo Ran as he answered, voice low, "Because you wouldn't have stayed out of it." "That's not your decision," Suo Ran shot back immediately, tension rising again. "I know." Cai Lang said, though he didn't sound like he agreed. The silence stretched, thick and unresolved, pressing in around them.
Lian ziho glanced between the two, the shift in atmosphere unmistakable now, and reached for the bottle again, his tone lighter but more careful. "Okay… next round before this turns into something else."
They continued the game, though whatever lightness it had at the start was long gone. Lian Ziho spun the bottle again, slower this time, like even he was starting to feel the weight in the room. The glass turned, wobbled slightly, then finally came to a stop pointing at Cai Lang.
Lian ziho leaned back, one brow lifting, a faint, knowing smile returning. "Well. Looks like fate has a sense of humor." Cai Lang didn't react at all. He just sat there, calm and unreadable. "Truth or dare?" Lian ziho asked, already sounding like he knew the answer. "Truth." Cai Lang replied.
Suo Ran's gaze flicked toward him for a brief moment, then quickly away again, like even looking for too long felt risky now. Lian ziho nodded slowly, tapping his fingers against the table as if thinking, though the question was clearly already chosen. "Alright," he said casually, "let's go back to something simple." There was a pause, just long enough to feel intentional. Then he said, "Love life." The word settled between them heavily. Cai Lang's expression didn't change, not even slightly, but something in the air tightened.
Lian ziho watched him closely. "You've been avoiding that one pretty consistently." Still no response. "Anyone special?" he pressed, voice softer but more focused now.
Cai Lang reached for his glass and drank without a word. Lian ziho let out a quiet breath, almost like a small amused laugh. "Thought so." He tilted his head slightly, studying him. "So there is someone." Cai Lang placed the glass back down carefully. Still didn't speak. "Ex?" Lian ziho tried again, a little more direct this time, not letting it go. Cai Lang drank again. This time slower. Heavier. And across the table, Suo Ran's fingers tightened subtly in his lap, his eyes lowering as the silence stretched even further, heavier than the game itself.
By the time they stood up, Cai Lang was unsteady. "I'll drop him." Lian ziho said, hauling Cai Lang up. "You good?" Suo Ran nodded. "Yeah." Cai Lang barely spoke on the way home.
Lian ziho left once they reached the building, waving casually."Take care of him, neighbor."
The door closed.Cai Lang's apartment was dark, expensive, and quiet.
Suo Ran guided him to the couch. "Sit."
"I don't need you." Cai Lang muttered.
"I know," Suo Ran said calmly. "I'm just being polite."
He brought water.Suo Ran hesitated only a moment before stepping forward and trying to offer it to Cai Lang, his voice low. "Drink this. You've had enough."Cai Lang didn't even look at him.He pushed the glass away.
The water splashed out, soaking the front of his jacket in an instant.Suo Ran froze. "Hey!"
But Cai Lang had already looked away again, breathing uneven, expression tight like he was holding something back by force alone.
Suo Ran exhaled slowly, frustration and concern mixing together. "You're impossible."Without waiting for a response, he stepped closer anyway, removing Cai Lang's jacket with practiced, almost detached efficiency. "You're going to catch a cold acting like this."Cai Lang didn't stop him.
Suo Ran shook the wet sleeve lightly, already falling into routine, focusing on the task instead of the tension in the air. "Honestly, you act like you're fine, but you're not even."
As he bent slightly to straighten Cai Lang's shirt collar, a hand suddenly caught his wrist.
"Don't." Cai Lang murmured.Suo Ran went still instantly. His breath caught in his throat. "Let go."Cai Lang didn't.Instead, he pulled him closer unsteady, uncontrolled. It was messy, disoriented, like he wasn't fully there anymore, only reacting.Suo Ran's pulse spiked. "Cai Lang what are you..."But he didn't finish.Because Cai Lang leaned in and kissed him.
Suo Ran froze completely. Then instinct kicked in he pushed him, hard enough to create space, stumbling back a step as his mind went completely blank. For a second, he didn't even move, didn't even breathe properly, like his body hadn't caught up to what just happened. Then Cai Lang exhaled against him, distant, unfocused, as if he wasn't really seeing him at all, and whispered barely audible " An Xin."The name hit the air like a crack.
Suo Ran went rigid.Everything stopped.
He pulled back sharply, breath uneven, heart pounding so hard it hurt. "What…?" His voice broke slightly, confusion and disbelief bleeding through. "What did you just say?"
Cai Lang didn't answer. His grip loosened.
Then fell away completely. His body swayed once before he collapsed back into the chair, unconscious, breathing uneven and heavy.
Silence swallowed the room.Suo Ran stood frozen, staring at him, hand still half-raised like the moment hadn't ended yet, like it could still be undone if he didn't move.
" An Xin?" he repeated quietly, almost to himself. "Who… is that?"
Cai Lang's uneven breathing filled the space.Suo Ran took a slow step back, then another, fingers trembling faintly at his side as the reality settled in heavier with every second. His voice came out lower now, almost hollow. "You don't even know who you were looking at…"He stayed there for a long moment, staring at Cai Lang like he was trying to piece together something that refused to make sense, before turning away, the silence behind him heavier than anything said out loud.
